Ultrasonic methods are used in a wide variety of applications including medical studies, geological mapping, and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) tests. In the field of ultrasonic NDE, it is necessary to treat inverse problems of various types. The objective of this paper is to predict the flaw response in an inhomogeneous solid medium. A mathematical modelling of the testing situation is very valuable for a number of reasons. The modelling helps in developing physical intuition and in the interpretation of tests. Multi-Gaussian Beam (MGB) model is used to represent the incident ultrasonic beam. The effect of ultrasonic attenuation and phase velocity dispersion due to grain scattering is included in the predictions. The variation of received voltage is analyzed against the distance of the flaw from the transducer for different dimensions of a square cylinder void. The effect of variation of mean diameter of the grains on the received voltage for different domain of interest is also studied.

ABSTRACTVariation of internal stress states in cold rolled sheet metal can essentially influence the result of forming processes. Therefore it is important to control the forming process by a practicable in line testing method. For this purpose magnetic and ultrasonic nondestructive methods are available. However, it is necessary to calibrate these techniques. This paper describes a first step of such a calibration procedure making use of the neutron diffraction method. On the basis of the diffraction results an assessment of the magnetic and ultrasonic methods for the estimation of residual stress in the cold rolled iron-disks was made. Reasonable measuring concepts for practical applications to forming processes with cold rolled sheet metal are discussed.

The assessment of already installed anchorages for a possible exceeding of the service load level is a question that is gaining more and more importance, especially in building maintenance. Bonded anchors are of particular interest here, as the detection of a capacity reduction or load exceedance can cause damage to the concrete-bonded mortar behavior. This article investigates the extent to which ultrasonic methods can be used to make a prediction about the condition of anchorages in concrete and about their load history. A promising innovative assessment method has been developed. The challenges in carrying out the experimental investigations are the arrangement of the transducers, the design of the test set-up and the applicability of direct, indirect or semidirect ultrasonic transmission. The experimental investigations carried out on a test concrete mix and a bonded anchor system show that damage to the concrete structure can be detected by means of ultrasound. The results indicate the formation of cracks and therefore a weakening of the response determined by means of direct, indirect and semidirect ultrasonic transmission. However, for application under non-laboratory conditions and on anchors with unknown load history, the calibration with a reference anchor and the identification of the maximum load is required. This enables a referencing of the other loaded anchors to the unloaded conditions and allows an estimation of the load history of individual anchors.
