One of the constitutive assumptions for Marx and Engels’ thought was to criticise the Enlightenment’s ideaof revolution in school education. This education, which was an elite right in their time, did not become anobject of independent reflection. The workers’ movement identified it with self-education. Intelligence withschooling. The development of schooling pushed towards the transfer of political struggle to the school.Educational policy in countries ruled by authoritarian parties appealing to Marxism and in countries wheremovements appealing to Marxism had an impact on education became a new problem. The current profoundcrisis of these phenomena makes us ask questions about the logic of their development and the reasons forthe current breakdown.

Politically, educational position of madrasah (Islamic institution of learning) has been relatively powerful although its function is complementary to school education. However, problematic complexities faced by the madrasah nowadays still needs a long political struggle to make madrasah capable of running its function well and also keeping itself as a relatively original native religious institution constructed by long historic struggle of the moslem community. It is necessary for both madrasah and government as its protector to be aware of not only for the benefit of madrasah itself and a feeling of regret if madrasah should be disappeared, but also to guarantee the availability of educated and competitive human resources of the madrasah at both the national and international level. By using politico-historical perspective, this article tries to unpack and explicate what and how Madrasah as the religious-education institution in Indonesia.

This contribution discusses recent debates on the adequate form of ‘critique’ with a meta-critical intention. Since the partisans of academic critique typically fail to account for the effects of their own institutional embeddedness, their methodological reflections neutralize oppositional demands and turn political struggle into a scholastic exercise. In an extension of this analysis, the article aims to show how the academic class over-estimates its potential for bringing about liberating political change, how it falsely generalizes its own conditions of existence, and how it really contributes to the justification of capitalist power structures. The suspicion that recent populist attacks on the ‘elite’ have a fundament in progressive-liberal coalitions thus finds support in the practice of progressive discourse.
