EM enrichment culture liquid was immobilized on nano-silica carrier to form microbial nano ball, so as to investigate the reaction kinetics of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) by microbial nano ball. The results showed that first order reaction kinetics model could describe NH4+-N removal by different diameter microbial nano-silica balls well. And the microbe could keep higher biological activity between 0-72h. Reaction kinetic equations of NH4+-N were: (1) when diameter was 10mm, (0-48h), (48-72h); (2) when diameter was 20mm, (0-48h), (48-72h); (3) (0-48h), (48-72h).

As a prelude to the study of chemical weathering of rocks and soils in S.E. Ontario, a study of the composition of precipitation waters at 12 sites within the area was initiated. Analyses of bulk precipitation of both rainfall and snowfall are presented and compared with similarly derived results in other areas.The silica and aluminum contents are regarded as being high, although in snow silica is absent and aluminum is quite high. Areal differences in silica content appear to be connected with local differences in lithology. Iron occurs in the same concentrations as aluminum and is probably derived from atmospheric dusts. The sodium content is high, especially when compared with inland sites in other areas. Potassium is generally somewhat lower than sodium. Although the calcium content may reflect local differences in lithology, the dissolved magnesium is surprisingly uniform. Lithological differences in the area are also reflected in the significantly higher nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in the limestone area. Snowfall is markedly high in sulfates, which is considered to be a function of climatic and industrial causes. The high chloride concentrations in such a 'non-marine' environment are not explained.

EM enrichment culture liquid was immobilized on nano-silica carrier consisting of pond sediment, zeolite powder and nano-silica to form microbial nano-silica ball. Influencing factors of initial ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), COD, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations on wastewater purification by microbial nano-silica ball were studied. The results showed that removal rate of NH4+-N, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) was the highest with COD concentration of 500mg/L when initial COD was ranged from 250 to 2000mg/L. On the condition of initial NH4+-N concentration ranged from 50 to 500mg/L, removal amount of NH4+-N and TN in wastewater reached the maximum when NH4+-N concentration was 400mg/L. On the condition that pH was ranged from6 to 9, removal effect of pollutants was the best when pH was 8. The results also showed that NH4+-N and TN removal rates in wastewater could be increased by appropriate aeration. But aeration had no effect on TP removal rate in wastewater.

To form microbial nanoball, EM active calcium was immobilized on nano-silica carrier consisting of pond sediment, zeolite powder and nanosilica. Through real-time monitoring of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) aquaculture wastewater, the purification effects of Microbial nanoSilica Ball on aquaculture wastewater under different mud-water ratio condition were studied. The results showed that the purification effect reached best in 3-6 days for all treatments and was better for mud-water ratio of 1:2.7. In this mud-water ratio, it was indicated that pH was maintained at 7-8.5 which was an optimum value for the aquaculture, the content of DO was increased by 82.16% compared with the initial value and the removal rate of COD and NH4+-N was 57.80% and 54.60% respectively.

A preliminary study of human mammary carcinoma on the ultrastructural level is reported for a metastatic, subcutaneous nodule, obtained as a surgical biopsy. The patient's tumor had responded favorably to a series of hormonal therapies, including androgens, estrogens, progestins, and corticoids for recurring nodules over eight years. The pertinent nodule was removed from the region of the gluteal maximus, two weeks following stilbestrol therapy. It was about 1.5 cms in diameter, and was located within the dermis. Pieces from it were fixed immediately in cold fixatives: phosphate buffered osmium tetroxide, glutaraldehyde, and paraformaldehyde. Embedment in each case was in Vestopal W. Contrasting was done with combinations of uranyl acetate and lead hydroxide.

A new strain of mice, which had arisen by mutation from a dystrophic mouse colony was designated ‘mdx’, because the genetic defect, which manifests itself in brief periods of muscle destruction followed by episodes of muscle regeneration appears to be X-linked. Further studies of histopathological changes in muscle from ‘mdx’ mice at the light microscopic or electron microscopic levels have been published, but only one preliminary study has been on the tibialis anterior (TA) of ‘mdx’ mice less than four weeks old. Lesions in the ‘mdx’ mice vary between different muscles, and centronucleation of fibers in all muscles studied so far appears to be especially prominent in older mice. Lesions in young ‘mdx’ mice have not been studied extensively, and the results appear to be at variance with one another. The degenerative and regenerative aspects of the lesions in the TA of 23 to 26-day-old ‘mdx’ mice appear to vary quantitatively.

Left ventricular assist systems are being developed for eventual long term or permanent implantation as an alternative to heart transplantation in patients unsuitable for or denied the transplant option. Evaluation of the effects of these devices upon normal physiology is required. A preliminary study was conducted to evaluate the morphology of aortic tissue from calves implanted with a pneumatic Left Ventricular Assist device-LVAD. Two 3 month old heifer calves (calf 1 and calf 2) were electively explanted after 128 days and 47 days respectively. Descending thoracic aortic tissue from both animals was removed immediately post mortem and placed into karnovsky’s fixative. The tissue was subsequently processed for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Some aortic tissue was fixed in neutral buffered formalin and processed for routine light microscopy.

Purpose This preliminary study examined whether speech profiles exist for adults with hereditary ataxia based on 2 competing frameworks: a pattern of instability/inflexibility or a pattern of differential subsystem involvement. Method Four dysarthria experts rated the speech samples of 8 adults with dysarthria from hereditary ataxia using visual analog scales and presence/severity rating scales of speech characteristics. Speaking tasks included diadochokinetics, sustained phonation, and a monologue. Results Speech profiles aligned with the instability/inflexibility framework, with the pattern of instability being the most common. Speech profiles did not emerge for the majority of speakers using the differential subsystem framework. Conclusions The findings extend previous research on pure ataxic dysarthria and suggest a possible framework for understanding the speech heterogeneity associated with the ataxias. The predominance of the instability profile is consistent with the notion of impaired feedforward control in speakers with cerebellar disruption.
