Purpose: As a novel hepatokine, fetuin B involves in various functions of energy metabolism. Recent advance reveals a complex interaction between bone and liver via the secretion of hepatokines. The association between serum fetuin B and osteoporosis was evaluated in a 4-year hospital-based prospective study of 1,370 Chinese postmenopausal women. Methods: Bone mineral densities (BMDs) were obtained on femoral neck and lumbar spines by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum fetuin B level was tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Of the 1,370 participants in the baseline study (2012), 650 subjects were included in the 4-year follow-up study (2016). Serum fetuin B level presented higher in subjects with osteoporosis (106.7 ± 17.6 μg/ml) than it in controls (86.3 ± 17.5 μg/ml) (P < 0.001). Meanwhile, fetuin B positively correlated with triglycerides (r = 0.227, P = 0.001), femoral BMD (r = -0.426, P < 0.001) and lumbar BMD (r = -0.332, P < 0.001). At the 4-year follow-up, 116 subjects had developed osteoporosis. Serum fetuin B concentration was significantly higher in subjects who developed (P < 0.001). The osteoporosis incidence increased from Q1 9.9%, Q2 14.7%, and Q3 17.8% to Q4 30.2% (P for trend < 0.001), among the quartiles of baseline fetuin B. A higher fetuin B baseline level was linked to the incidence of osteoporosis (adjusted OR = 1.179, 95% CI [1.119 – 1.243], P = 0.009). Conclusion: Serum fetuin B levels increased with the development of osteoporosis.

Scanning microscopy was used to study the surface of human gallstones and the surface of fractures. The specimens were obtained by operation, washed with water, dried at room temperature and shadowcasted with carbon and aluminum. Most of the specimens belong to patients from a series of X-ray follow-up study, examined during the last twenty years. So it was possible to evaluate approximately the age of these gallstones and to get information on the intensity of growing and solving.Cholesterol, a group of bile pigment substances and different salts of calcium, are the main components of human gallstones. By X-ray diffraction technique, infra-red spectroscopy and by chemical analysis it was demonstrated that all three components can be found in any gallstone. In the presence of water cholesterol crystallizes in pane-like plates of the triclinic crystal system.

Background: Human milk contains antibodies against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) following Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). These antibodies may serve as protection against COVID-19 in infants. However, the evolution of these human milk antibodies over time is unclear. Research Aim: To elucidate the evolution of immunoglobulin A (IgA) against SARS-CoV-2 in human milk after a SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: This longitudinal follow-up study included lactating mothers ( N = 24) who had participated in the COVID MILK study. To assess the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, serum and human milk samples were collected 14–143 days after the onset of clinical symptoms related to COVID-19. Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay was used to detect antibodies against the ectodomain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Results: SARS-CoV-2 antibodies remain present up to 5 months (143 days) in human milk after onset of COVID-19 symptoms. Overall, SARS-CoV-2 IgA in human milk seems to gradually decrease over time. Conclusion: Human milk from SARS-CoV-2 convalescent lactating mothers contains specific IgA antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein up to at least 5 months post-infection. Passive viral immunity can be transferred via human milk and may serve as protection for infants against COVID-19. Using X-radiography both for the follow-up study of germination and the correlation of tree seed germinability with embryo and endosperm (or megagametophyte) development often involve seed transfer by hand. Such a procedure is tedious and time-consuming and errors of seed displacement occur frequently. Conventional germination procedures also make counting germinants and evaluating seedling vigor difficult due to the shifting of positions of germinating seeds. A simple technique of using a combination of mechanized vacuum counting plate and perforated Plexiglas templates was devised to overcome these difficulties. It decreased by 40 times the time needed to transfer 400 seeds by hand. It also reduced errors of seed displacement.
