The article introduces the reader to developments with unions and literacy, a labour activity that is gaining a toe-hold on today’s union agenda. The historical role of unions and literacy is explored, as well as its relationship to more traditional labour education. Some tough questions are asked about who is participating in union activity and who is left out, and how literacy has the potential to reach many union members who are not yet active. The article takes the reader inside a class of night cleaners. Building on the the real situation of a worker/participant who has been injured, the instructor facilitates a learning process that builds literacy skills while exploring avenues for collective recourse. While union-based literacy challenges many traditional assumptions and practices both in the workplace and within the labour movement, it is gaining ground and finding resonance within a growing number of Canadian unions, federations and the Canadian Labour Congress. With a popular education approach that builds on the Latin American and other Third World experience, literacy is revealed as an important metaphor for inclusion and democratization. L’article présente l’évolution de la participation syndicale à l’alphabétisation, qui commence à s’inscrire au programme syndical. Il traite du rôle historique des syndicats en matière d’alphabétisation et des relations entre celle-ci et les formes plus traditionnelles d’éducation syndicale. De difficiles questions sont posées au sujet des personnes qui participent à l’activité syndicale et de celles qui en sont exclues ainsi que des moyens par lesquels l’alphabétisation peut permettre à de nombreux membres qui ne sont pas encore actifs de s’impliquer dans leurs syndicats. L’auteure fait découvrir la réalité d’une classe de personnel de nettoyage de nuit. En se fondant sur un cas vécu où une personne participant au cours s’est blessée, l’animatrice favorise un apprentissage permettant à la classe de développer ses capacités de base en examinant des recours collectifs possibles. L’alphabétisation axée sur les travailleurs et les travailleuses remet en question de nombreuses hypothèses et pratiques traditionnellement employées en milieu de travail et au sein du mouvement syndical, mais elle trouve de plus en plus d’appuis et gagne du terrain au sein d’un nombre croissant de syndicats et de fédérations du travail du Canada ainsi qu’au Congrès du travail du Canada. Dans le cadre d’une approche d’éducation populaire s’appuyant fond sur l’expérience acquise en Amérique latine et dans d’autres parties du tiers monde, l’alphabétisation constitue une importante métaphore de l’inclusion et de la démocratisation.

The historical role of the working class has recently been subject to reassessment. Frequently repudiated are the Marxist views that the proletariat constitutes either, as Marx's and Engels' classic scheme would have it, the revolutionary social force in capitalist societies, or, as Lenin believed, the pre-eminent element in a revolutionary alliance with the poorest strata of the peasantry, or, finally, as Mao holds, the leadership cadres needed to mobilize the downtrodden peasant masses into conscious, revolutionary action. Consider, for instance, the meager role attributed to the working class in Barrington Moore's brilliant effort, in Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy, to delineate three historical routes to modernity.

Este artículo presenta una propuesta educativa de índole técnico pero con bases enraizadas en la educación popular (Freire, 1970). La misma pretende dar luces de cómo la educación profesional podría tener una vinculación para el desarrollo local del territorio. El desarrollo local tiene sus máximos exponentes en los ámbitos de la recuperación de las fuentes endógenas y en la articulación del tejido asociativo (Herrera, 2009), con el consecuente beneficio de la potenciación de instrumentos participativos que mejoren los intercambios democráticos del territorio. Los centros educativos pueden tener una visión privilegiada del territorio, ya que confluyen en el mismo algunos elementos, actores y actrices clave, y si además, el centro tiene el cometido formativo de trabajar por el desarrollo desde la articulación de los elementos productivos, tenemos un recurso de excelentes características para el desarrollo local. La propuesta es por tanto, la vinculación de los centros para la educación y el trabajo con una perspectiva de desarrollo local, especialmente en ámbitos con comunidades con baja estructuración social, es decir, altos índices de desempleo, desescolarización, dificultades económicas, etc. Estos escenarios son muy habituales en periferias urbanas tanto de Europa como de América, pero también podemos encontrar dichos ámbitos, en determinadas comunidades rurales latinoamericanas, aunque con características diferenciadas. La actuación por la promoción local, en estos casos, tendrá una responsabilidad especial, ya que el trabajo por la escolaridad inconclusa y la inclusión educativa, trabajarán, sin género de dudas, por el desarrollo comunitario (Torrent, 2012). This paper presents an educational proposal of a technical nature but with bases rooted in popular education (Freire, 1970). It aims to provide lights on how vocational education, could have a link to the local development of the territory. Local development has its maximum exponents in the fields of the recovery of the endogenous sources and in the articulation of the associative network (Herrera, 2009), with the consequent benefit of enhancing participatory instruments that improve the democratic exchanges of territory. The educative centers may have a privileged territory view, converge in the same few elements, actors and actresses key, also if the Centre has the role of formative work development from the articulation of the productive elements, we have a resource of excellent characteristics for local development. The proposal is therefore, the linkage of the Centers for education and work with a perspective of local development, especially in areas with low social structuring communities, i.e., high rates of unemployment, schooling, economic difficulties, etc. These scenarios are very common in urban peripheries both in Europe and in America, but these fields, can also be found in certain rural communities, Latin American, although with different characteristics. The incidence in the local promotion, in these cases, will have a special responsibility, since the work by the unfinished schooling and educational inclusion, without doubt, work for community development (Torrent, 2012).

Resumo:  Apresenta-se uma discussão sobre o conhecimento e a tese dos três mundos no qual a interação entre estes nos aproxima da verdade do problema corpo-mente, tendo em vista, uma nova proposta de solução. O terceiro mundo é uma peça importante neste trabalho; sendo assim, analisaremos o que Popper designa como Mundo 3, em que ele consiste e o papel da linguagem como diferencial do ser humano. Apresentamos as críticas popperianas às correntes monistas e dualistas, ousando fazer uma crítica a Teoria do Conhecimento tradicional. Desta forma, a proposta apresentada por este filósofo da ciência diferencia-se de tudo que estava sendo feito até então, por isso, o interesse de apresentar essa abordagem pouco trabalhada de Popper. Palavras-chave: Conhecimento. Mundo 3.Abstract: In this work, we present a discussion about knowledge and the theory of the three worlds in which the interaction between them approaches to the truth of the mind-body problem, in view of a proposed solution. The third world is an important piece in this work. Therefore, we will analyze what Popper describes as World 3, what it is and the role of language as a differential of human beings. We present Popper’s criticisms to the monistic and dualistic currents, daring to criticize the theory of traditional knowledge. Thus, the proposal of science presented by this philosopher differs from everything that was being done until then. Issues of immigrant political incorporation and transnational politics have drawn increased interest among migration scholars. This paper contributes to debates in this field by examining the role of networks, partnerships and collaborations of immigrant community organizations as mechanisms for immigrant political participation both locally and transnationally. These issues are addressed through an ethnographic study of the Hispanic Development Council, an umbrella advocacy organization representing settlement agencies serving Latin American immigrants in Toronto, Canada. Analysis of HDC’s three sets of networks (at the community, city and transnational levels) from a geographic and relational approach demonstrates the potentials and limits of nonprofit sector partnerships as mechanisms and concrete spaces for immigrant mobilization, empowerment, and social action in a context of neoliberal governance. It is argued that a combination of partnerships with a range of both state and non-state actors and at multiple scales can be significant in enabling nonprofit organizations to advance the interests of immigrant, minority and disadvantaged communities.

Leviticus 25:39–46 describes a two-tier model of slavery that distinguishes Israelites from foreign slaves. It requires that Israelites be indentured only temporarily while foreigners can be enslaved as chattel (permanent property). This model resembles the distinction between White indentured slaves and Black chattel slaves in the American colonies. However, the biblical influence on these early modern practices has been obscured by the rarity of citations of Lev. 25:39–46 in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century sources about slavery. This article reviews the history of slavery from ancient Middle Eastern antiquity through the seventeenth century to show the unique degree to which early modern institutions resembled the biblical model. It then exposes widespread knowledge of Leviticus 25 in early modern political and economic debates. Demonstrating this awareness shows with high probability that colonial cultures presupposed the two-tier model of slavery in Leviticus 25:39–46 to naturalize and justify their different treatment of White indentured slaves and Black chattel slaves.

Abstract Background and aims The association between smoking and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) relies on old meta-analyses including exclusively non-Jewish White populations. Uncertainty persists regarding the role of smoking in other ethnicities. Methods We systematically searched Medline/PubMed, Embase and Scopus for studies examining tobacco smoking and the risk of developing IBD, i.e., Crohn’s disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC). Two authors independently extracted study data and assessed each study’s risk-of-bias. We examined heterogeneity and small-study effect, and calculated summary estimates using random-effects models. Stratified analyses and meta-regression were employed to study the association between study-level characteristics and effect estimates. The strength of epidemiological evidence was assessed through prespecified criteria. Results We synthesized 57 studies examining the smoking-related risk of developing CD and UC. Non-Jewish White smokers were at increased risk of CD (29 studies; RR: 1.95, 95% CI: 1.69‒2.24; moderate evidence). No association was observed in Asian, Jewish and Latin-American populations (11 studies; RR: 0.97; 95% CI: 0.83–1.13), with no evidence of heterogeneity across these ethnicities. Smokers were at reduced risk of UC (51 studies; RR: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.48–0.64; weak evidence) irrespectively of ethnicity; however, cohort studies, large studies and those recently published showed attenuated associations. Conclusions This meta-analysis did not identify any increased risk of CD in smokers in ethnicities other than non-Jewish Whites, and confirmed the protective effect of smoking on UC occurrence. Future research should characterize the genetic background of CD patients across different ethnicities to improve our understanding on the role of smoking in CD pathogenesis.
