Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face more serious challenges to their survival than do larger firms. To succeed, SMEs must establish and maintain credibility in the marketplace to attract the resources required for survival. Most co-opt legitimacy by mimicking the cues that signal credibility to convince potential stakeholders that something stands behind their promises. This research examines the role of information and communications technology (ICT) in legitimacy-building from the perspective of both SME founders and customers. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted in a variety of industries to determine whether the ICT-related legitimacy schema from the customers’ perspective differs substantially from that of firm founders. Results indicate that customers compare the ICT information provided in SME’s sales pitches to pre-existing ICT expectations about the nature of desirable sales transactions. We describe the relationship between violations of ICT expectations, legitimacy, and purchase decisions. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

In this article, the implementation of an information strategy project in a Portuguese Real Estate company is analyzed. This involves its framing - historical and socio-economic - and a brief description of the activity sector in which the company operates. Several well managed projects have been developed to improve the competitive position of the company, but without focus all the activities lose strength because they might not reach their proposed targets. Some tools to identify the information needs of business activity developed are described, as well as the role of information as a promoter of competitive advantages. Social media tools were utilized and proved to be a great strategic decision. To conclude, a few reminders of the factors to consider in developing the information strategy to implement and that information management without a strategy could result in several diversified decisions without any positive consequence for the organization.

Italy was the first European country to be affected by COVID-19, facing an unprecedented situation. The reaction required drastic solutions and highly restrictive measures, which severely tested the trust of the Italian people. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the introduced measures was not only linked to political decisions, but also to the choice of the Italian people to trust and rely on institutions, accepting such necessary measures. In this context, the role of information sources was fundamental, since they strongly influence public opinion. The central focus of this research was to assess the information seeking behavior (ISB) of the Italian citizens, to understand how they related to information and how their specific use of information influenced public opinion. By making use of a survey addressed to 4260 Italian citizens, we identified extraordinarily virtuous behavior in the population: people strongly modified their ISB in order to address the most reliable sources. In particular, we found a very high reliance on scientists, which is particularly striking, if compared to the past. Moreover, starting from the survey results, we used social simulation to estimate the evolution of public opinion. Comparing the ISB during and before COVID-19, we discovered that the shift in the ISB, during the pandemic, may have actually positively influenced public opinion, facilitating the acceptance of the costly restrictions introduced.

The “Bnei Menashe” are a marginalized community that immigrated from India to Israel. The community has diverse information needs, yet they are characterized by difficulties that prevent them from acquiring vital information. In this study, we utilized Sen’s (1993) “capabilities approach” as well as Friedland et al. (2012) “critical information needs” for the identification of the Bnei Menashe’s information capabilities, and the ways in which they answer them. The study was conducted using semi-structured individual in-depth interviews. The findings of the study relate that the Bnei Menashe succeed only partially in realizing the capability of being informed. This is a result of the partial technological exclusion that characterizes the community. This is a first-of-its-kind study, as the Bnei Menashe have not been studied methodically. Furthermore, the utilization of the capabilities approach represents a major contribution to existing communication theories, as the approach allows for a more wholesome understanding of the role of information and communication technologies in society.

Given the critical role of information and marketing in SME management it is surprising that little attention has been paid to the salient factors that motivate or inhibits consumer information used by agrifood SMEs. A model of organisational and informational factors affecting knowledge utilisation in Agri-food SMEs is presented and empirically tested through partial least squares analysis via SmartPLS. The results of the empirical testing of the conceptual model provide evidence to indicate that functional and technical qualities, provider-user interaction and usefulness in the market environment are determinants of knowledge utilisation. The findings of this study have implications for agri-food SME management in the UK regarding their growth and competitiveness in the medium and long term.

Abstract Both Fredkin's findings on the reversibility of logical operations and the novel capability to integrate Newton's equation of motion in an exactly reversible manner enables one to perform a gedankenexperiment in the form of a molecular dynamics simulation of the universe. This leads to a new validation of the reversible structure of the universe. Alternatively, the role of information needs to be upgraded in accordance with a recent proposal by Stonier.

Research background: Industry 4.0 is a response to rapid technical progress, caused by the dominant role of information technology, which covers and penetrates virtually into all the aspects of people's economic and social activities. At present, the terms “Digital Supply Chain”, “Supply Chain 4.0”, “Digital logistics”, and “Smart logistics” are widely used in business, and in particular, in the theory and practice of supply chain management (SCM). This demonstrates the relevance of the implementation of Industry 4.0 innovations into the practical activities of manufacturing, trading, and logistics companies, interconnected by networking in the process of delivering products or services to final consumers. In turn, this causes fundamental changes in the structure of supply chains, their business processes and behaviours, making existing approaches to management obsolete. Purpose of the article: The article aims at identifying supply chain development drivers under the conditions of ‘Industry 4.0’; determining the effect of DT in the cross-section of strategic and operational changes of supply chain; clarifying the readiness and capacity for DT implementation in the enterprises activity as exemplified by the enterprises operating in Ukraine in various fields of activity. Methods: Stratified proportional sampling was applied as the research method. Ukrainian enterprises of different size, involved in different supply chains, were considered as an object of research. The attitude of the Ukrainian enterprises to the DT implementation is presented, and the results are compared to the relevant research data in other countries. Findings & Value: This study will be valuable to both scientists and practitioners. Scientists will be able to understand the conceptual transformation of SC under the influence of DT. Practitioners will become aware of the following issues: current SCM trends and requirements; DT effects on the strategic and operational levels of the classical model of management; the level of readiness and ability of the Ukrainian enterprises to implement DT in their activities as compared to the enterprises in other countries.

The purpose of the article is to show the role and capabilities of libraries in meeting the constantly growing information needs of users, as well as the compliance of library activities with the new challenges of the modern information society. The methodology consists of the use of general scientific and special methods, namely: analytical and synthetic processing of information, logical and systematic approaches, terminological and historical methods, as well as comparison and interrelation of theory and practice. The scientific novelty of this work lies in the expansion of ideas about the role of libraries and their influence on the development of modern information society. Conclusions. Modern libraries are transforming and developing together with society, taking on the role of information, cultural, educational, social, and community centers. The active dissemination of the experience of transformation of libraries with a specific readership, differentiation of areas is facilitated by the search for new methods and forms of socio-cultural activities of libraries in Ukraine. Among them, there is a realization of the four-dimensional model of public library activity; conceptual model of a flexible library; digital education project «Public libraries as hubs for active citizens» and many others. Libraries create conditions for self-realization of users, their communication, full-fledged leisure, etc. It is in the library that citizens can learn throughout their lives, gaining the knowledge and skills needed, using both the resources of a particular library and open online resources and services.
