Advances in turbine-based engine efficiency and reliability are achieved through better knowledge of the mechanical interaction with the flow. The life-limiting component of a modern gas turbine engine is the high-pressure (HP) turbine stage due to the arduous environment. For the same reason, real gas turbine engine operation prevents fundamental research. Various types of experimental approaches have been developed to study the flow and in particular the heat transfer, cooling, materials, aero-elastic issues and forced response in turbines. Over the last 30 years short duration facilities have dominated the research in the study of turbine heat transfer and cooling. Two decades after the development of the von Karman Institute compression tube facility (built in the 90s), one could reconsider the design choices in view of the modern technology in compression, heating, control and electronics. The present paper provides first the history of the development and then how the wind tunnel is operated. Additionally the paper disseminates the experience and best practices in specifically designed measurement techniques to both experimentalists and experts in data processing. The final section overviews the turbine research capabilities, providing details on the required upgrades to the test section.

The temperature measurement of a very high temperature core melt is of importance in LAVA (lower-plenum Arrested Vessel Attack) experiment in which gap formation between core melt and the reactor lower head, and the effect of the gap on thermal behavior are to be measured. The existing temperature measurement techniques have some problems, where the thermocouple, one of the contact methods, is restricted to under 2000°C, and the infrared thermometry, one of the non-contact methods, is unable to measure an internal temperature and very sensitive to the interference from reacted gases. So, in order to solve these problems, the delay time of ultrasonic wavelets due to high temperature is suggested. One of the key initial conditions to be measured in LAVA is the initial corium melt temperature. To measure it, the LAVA measurement group has developed several kinds of UTS’s. As a first stage, a molten material temperature was measured up to 2314°C. Also, the optimization design of the UTS (ultrasonic temperature sensor) with persistence at the high temperature was suggested in this paper. And the utilization of the theory suggested in this paper and the efficiency of the developed system are certified by performing experiments.

Abstract Recent studies show that analytical predictions of crack growth in rotating components can be used in conjunction with displacement measurement techniques to identify critical levels of fatigue damage. However, investigations of this type traditionally have focused on the detection of damage at known flaw locations. This paper addresses the related problem of estimating damage associated with flaws at unknown locations, through the combined use of analytical models and measured vibration signatures. Because the measured data are insufficient to identify a unique solution for the location and severity of fatigue cracks, the function of the analytical model is to bound the extent of damage occurring at life-limiting locations. The prediction of remaining life based on estimates of worst-case fatigue damage and crack locations also is discussed.
