Uterine septum can negatively affect reproductive outcomes in women. Based on evidence from retrospective observational studies, hysteroscopic incision has been considered a solution to improve reproductive performance, however there has been recent controversy on the need for surgery for uterine septum. High quality evidence from prospective studies is still lacking, and until it is available, experts are encouraged to publish their data. We are therefore presenting our data that involves analysis of the patient characteristics, surgical approach and long-term reproductive outcomes of women who received treatment for uterine septum under the care of a single surgeon. This includes all women (99) who underwent hysteroscopic surgery for uterine septum between January 2001 and December 2019. Of those 99 women treated for intrauterine septum who were trying to conceive, 91.4% (64/70) achieved pregnancy, 78.6% (55/70) had live births and 8.6% (6/70) had miscarriages. No statistically significant difference was found in the live birth rates when data was analyzed in subgroups based on age, reason for referral/aetiology and severity of pathology. Our study results support the view that surgical treatment of uterine septa is beneficial in improving reproductive outcomes.

Over the past 2 decades, zebrafish, Danio rerio, have become a mainstream laboratory animal model, yet zebrafish husbandrypractices remain far from standardized. Feeding protocols play a critical role in the health, wellbeing, and productivity ofzebrafish laboratories, yet they vary significantly between facilities. In this study, we compared our current feeding protocol for juvenile zebrafish (30 dpf to 75 dpf), a 3:1mixture of fish flake and freeze-dried krill fed twice per day with live artemia twice per day (FKA), to a diet of Gemma Micro 300 fed once per day with live artemia once per day (GMA). Our results showed that juvenile EK wild-type zebrafish fed GMA were longer and heavier than juveniles fed FKA. As compared with FKA-fed juveniles, fish fed GMA as juveniles showed better reproductive performance as measured by spawning success, fertilization rate, and clutch size. As adults, fish from both feeding protocols were acclimated to our standard adult feeding protocol, and the long-term effects of juvenile diet were assessed. At 2 y of age, the groups showed no difference in mortality or fecundity. Reproductive performance is a crucial aspect of zebrafish research, as much of the research focuses on the developing embryo. Here we show that switching juvenile zebrafish from a mixture of flake and krill to Gemma Micro 300 improves reproductive performance, even with fewer feedings of live artemia, thus simplifying husbandry practices.

Abstract Aggressive behavior resulting from mixing to establish a dominance hierarchy is a welfare concern for group-housed sows. The associated stress could negatively impact reproductive performance (RP). Objectives of this study were to investigate associations between 1) mixing aggression intensity and RP within and between parities one (P1) and two (P2), and 2) aggression intensity, floor type and RP. A total of 164 gilts were followed through two parities. Gilts were mixed into stable groups of eight unfamiliar individuals four days after insemination, and housed on fully-slatted floors, either uncovered (CON; n = 84) or covered (RUB; n = 80) by a rubber slat-mat until farrowing (for both parities). Skin lesion scores (SLS) (proxy for mixing aggression intensity), were recorded 24–72 hrs post-mixing (0 = no lesions to 5 = severe lesions) on five body regions on left and right sides, and on the tail, in both parities. Total SLS was calculated for each sow. RP data were retrospectively acquired from farm records for both parities. Data were analyzed using GLMM in PROC GLIMMIX of SAS (v9.4) where 1) each parity analyzed separately, and 2) SLS in P1 used to predict RP in P2. Gilts with higher SLS in P2 had higher piglet mortality (P = 0.021) and longer cycle length (P = 0.003) in P2. Gilts with higher SLS in P1 had more non-productive days (P < 0.001) in P2. CON gilts had higher SLS than RUB gilts (P = 0.017) in P1, but not in P2 (P > 0.05). CON gilts also had more piglets born dead (P = 0.004) and tended to crush more piglets (P = 0.097) in P2. Our results confirm that mixing aggression impacts RP in the current parity negatively. They also suggest that mixing aggression experienced by gilts may have long-term negative carry-over effects on performance in subsequent parities. Use of rubber flooring appears to mitigate detrimental effects of mixing aggression, perhaps through improved sow comfort.

The reproductive performance of tagged Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddelli) was monitored at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, from 1970 to 1984. An age-specific reproductive schedule revealed the major onset of pupping at age 6 years, and a mean age of first birth of 7.1 years. The average asymptotic pupping rate of 0.61 is reached by age 10. The cost of pupping in a given year is reflected in a 0.05 drop in the probability of pupping the following year. This cost is not evident in females over 7 years old, suggesting that postweaning condition affects newly mature females more than those that are fully mature. Annual adult reproductive rates ranged from 0.46 to 0.79, with a possible periodicity of 5 to 6 years. Simulations were conducted to determine the impact on reproductive estimates of sighting biases associated with seals having had at least one pup (Parous) or having pupped that season (With-Pup). Age at first reproduction as deduced from an age-specific pupping schedule is strongly affected by both forms of sighting bias, but bias in sighting Parous females was the more important. Estimates of adult reproduction were affected minimally. Comparisons of reproductive estimates with those of Weddell seals at Signy Island are discussed with regard to the effects of sighting biases.

Abstract Study question Are the long-term reproductive outcomes following recurrent dilatation and curettage (D&C) for miscarriage in women with identified and treated intrauterine adhesions (IUAs) comparable to women without IUAs. Summary answer Reproductive outcomes in women with identified and treated IUAs following recurrent D&C for miscarriage are impaired compared to women without IUAs. What is known already The Prevention of Adhesions Post Abortion (PAPA) study showed that application of auto-crosslinked hyaluronic acid (ACP) gel, an absorbable barrier in women undergoing recurrent D&C for miscarriage resulted in a lower rate of IUAs, 13% versus 31% (relative risk 0.43, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.83), lower mean adhesion score and significant less moderate to severe IUAs. It is unclear what the impact is of IUAs on long-term reproductive performance. Study design, size, duration This was a follow-up of the PAPA study, a multicenter randomized controlled trial evaluating the application of ACP gel in women undergoing recurrent D&C for miscarriage. All included women received a diagnostic hysteroscopy 8–12 weeks after randomization to evaluate the uterine cavity and for adhesiolysis if IUAs were present. Here, we present the reproductive outcomes in women with identified and treated IUAs versus women without IUAs, 46 months after randomization. Participants/materials, setting, methods Between December 2011 and July 2015, 152 women with a first-trimester miscarriage with at least one previous D&C, were randomized for D&C alone or D&C with immediate intrauterine application of ACP gel. Participants were approached at least 30 months after randomization to evaluate reproductive performance, obstetric and neonatal outcomes and cycle characteristics. Main outcome was ongoing pregnancy. Outcomes of subsequent pregnancies, time to conception and time to live birth were also recorded. Main results and the role of chance In women pursuing a pregnancy, 14/24 (58%) ongoing pregnancies were recorded in women with identified and treated IUAs versus 80/89 (90%) ongoing pregnancies in women without IUAs odds ratio (OR) 0.18 (95% CI 0.06 to 0.50, P-value <0.001). Documented live birth was also lower in women with IUAs; 13/24 (54%) with versus 75/89 (84%) without IUAs, OR 0.22 (95% CI: 0.08 to-0.59, P-value 0.004). The median time to conception was 7 months in women with identified and treated IUAs versus 5 months in women without IUAs (hazard ratio (HR) 0.84 (95% CI 0.54 to 1.33)) and time to conception leading to a live birth 15 months versus 5.0 months (HR 0.54 (95% CI: 0.30 to 0.97)). In women with identified and treated IUAs, premature deliveries were recorded in 3/16 (19%) versus 4/88 (5%) in women without IUAs, P-value 0.01. Complications were recorded in respectively 12/16 (75%) versus 26/88 (30%), P-value 0.001. No differences were recorded in mean birth weight between the groups. Limitations, reasons for caution In the original PAPA study, randomization was applied for ACP gel application. Comparing women with and without IUAs is not in line with the randomization and therefore confounding of the results cannot be excluded. IUAs, if visible during routine hysteroscopy after randomization were removed as part of the study protocol. Wider implications of the findings As IUAs have an impact on reproductive performance, even after hysteroscopic adhesiolysis, primary prevention is essential. Expectative and medical management should therefore be considered as serious alternatives for D&C in women with a miscarriage. In case D&C is necessary, application of ACP gel should be considered.
