The higher education sector faces considerable competition around the world. Accordingly, universities need to make more efforts to increase their competitive advantages. This study aimed to empirically investigate the effect of organizational innovation (OI), knowledge management (KM), and strategic human resource management (SHRM), with a dependent variable of sustainable competitive advantages (SCAs), at Jordanian Universities. For this aim, a specially designed questionnaire has been distributed to study a convenience sample of 400 academic and administrative staff at Jordanian private and public universities, to obtain the required quantitative data. The study’s hypotheses were verified by Baron and Kenny’s mediation regression approach using the software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results of the study demonstrate that there is a significant positive relationship between the following pairs of variables: KM and SCA; SHRM and SCA; SHRM and OI; KM and OI; and OI and SCA, whereas OI was found to have a partial and indirect significant mediation impact on the direct relationship between KM and SHRM and universities (organizations) gaining SCAs. Finally, it was concluded that more attention needs to be paid to the OI aspect in organizations and to integrate it with KM and SHRM in a way that promotes SCAs. In addition, we propose that similar studies should be conducted in industries other than education or the education sector in different countries in a way that obtains generalized and representative results.

Strategic human resource management (SHRM) is an enhancement in the effectiveness of personnel management which has developed out of pressures for change in the way organizations manage human resources. It consists of common elements found in a variety of public and private employers: recognition that human resources are critical; a shift from position management to work and employees; more innovation; asset development and cost control; and a transition from EEO/AA compliance to work force diversity.

SHRM is the strategic practice of attracting, developing, rewarding, and retaining employees with the important goal of increasing various benefits to both employees as individuals and organization as a whole. SHRM strategically utilizes organizational resources and talent within HR functions to make organizations more effective in the modern workforce. Organizational learning and KM allow for organizational employees to share knowledge and learn exactly what is relevant to their specific tasks toward encouraging human capital and knowledge creation. The chapter argues that promoting SHRM, organizational learning, and KM has the potential to enhance organizational performance and achieve strategic goals in modern organizations.

Knowledge is the currency of the new economy and consequently information is power. For this reason, it is a business imperative to grow and shape intellectual capital. Human resource management (HRM) plays a pivotal role in creating and growing intellectual capital and embedding it within organizational systems. Previous studies in HRM have demonstrated the connection between technological innovation and HRM in two conspicuously different ways. Specifically, some have illustrated how HR strategies can enhance technological innovation in organizations (Gloet & Terziovski, 2004; Jiménez-Jiménez & Sanz-Valle, 2005) while others have shown ways in which HR functions can be aligned and made more efficient by the effective use of technology (Ashbaugh & Miranda, 2002; Broderick & Boudreau, 1992; Bussler & Davis, 2001/2002). In this article, a more holistic approach is taken in viewing technology as both an input and an outcome of effective HRM. To this end, the aim here is to provide a description of some of the key ways in which HRM can enhance the development, implementation, and success of new technologies as well as how HRM can enhance its own value through the use of new technologies.
