Coordinate axes have been used extensively in three-dimensional (3D) GIS processing to help visualize the location of points directly. Meanwhile, AxSceneControl is a visual control provided by ESRI®ArcGIS®Engine, which is suited to generating perspective scenes that allow user to navigate and interact with 3D feature and raster data. However, there is no direct solution given by ArcGIS Engine to set Coordinate axes in 3D scenes. In this paper, we proposed and implemented an approach to generate and customize coordinate axis in AxSceneControl. By this method, up to five coordinate axes, named as x axis, y axis, z axis, top axis and right axis, can be drawn based on the layer that is loaded to the AxSceneControl. Furthermore, users can modify the properties of coordinate axes such as changing the style of degree scale, determining which axis will be shown and resizing the degree density to achieve simple coordinate axis.

Mining subsidence often produces significant horizontal and vertical movements at the ground surface, the surface deformation induced by underground coal mining can be predicted by probability integral method, and the surface geo-deformation disasters can be visualized based on GIS components. A three dimensional (3D) visualizing system of surface geo-deformation information is designed and developed with ArcGIS Engine and C# in the study. According to the surface deformation-predicted data induced by underground coal mining in Guobei Coalmine of Huaibei mine field, the extents and degrees of ground deformation disasters are visualized in 3D views for surface vertical subsidence, slope, curvature, horizontal displacement and horizontal strain based on the GIS-developed application platform.

In this article, geometric primitive approach is used to realize the design and development of point symbol database for mapping based on C# .NET and ArcGIS Engine. This paper presents the design framework and the design process of point symbol database, and studies design method and attribute management of point symbol, especially the design of point symbol attribute of word type of TrueType, which makes conveniently the point symbol for special map users needed.

In geographical field, the researches on spatial hierarchies are extensive, but there is a lack of effective method to generate and express hierarchical spatial structures. As a frequently-used visualising method, Voronoi Treemaps are able to represent hierarchical data, but limited to displaying non-spatial data. The approach of geographical Voronoi Treemaps is proposed to solve these problems by allowing for spatial division from point features with spatial coordinates and references. Additionally, this enables to create hierarchical layouts in the form of Voronoi Treemap in GIS environments with the ArcGIS Engine. The generated layouts are saved in a geodatabase, which is convenient for adding GIS enhancements such as colouring, edge sizes, legends, borders, scales, and compass. The approach aims to establish a kind of spatial data model to represent urban hierarchies, organisation structures and region differences and so on, which expands the application range of Voronoi Treemaps in the geographical field.
