This paper analyses the destructive and non-destructive methods for checking the degree of compaction of asphalt layers and their multi-criteria evaluation. The data obtained during laying of ACO 11+50 mm thickness was selected for the analysis. The bulk density was determined by using probes Troxler 3440, Troxler 2701 and from the drill cores in these given locations. According to the analysis accuracy, the probe Troxler 2701 used to determine the final degree of compaction of the construction asphalt layer and for the routine control of compaction is not suitable, even though when applying AHP (Analytic Hierarch Process) it was assessed as the second most suitable one.

AbstractOrigin of gemstones is a key aspect not only in gemological field but also in Cultural Heritage studies, for the correct evaluation of precious artifacts. The studies on gems require the application of non-invasive and non-destructive methods; among them, portable spectroscopic techniques has been demonstrated as powerful tools, providing a fingerprint of gems for origin and provenance determination. In this study, portable XRF spectroscopy has been applied to test the potential of the technique for the origin determination of corundum gems. The obtained results allowed distinguishing natural and synthetic rubies and sapphires.

Roofing slate is a traditional natural material for roofing and other construction applications in various types of buildings. The paper deals with both traditional methods of mineralogical-petrographic analysis as well as completely new methods (X-ray CT) rendering fast and reliable determination of qualitative parameters and potential slate durability in building constructions. A mutual combination of the methods represents a rapid, effective and modern alternative to lengthy laboratory tests to determine physical-mechanical properties of newly used roofing, especially in historical buildings.

Summary Wood density measurement is related to several factors that influence wood quality. In this paper, a CT image calibration procedure which allows image quantification in terms of dry bulk density is presented for three different X- and gamma-ray energies (28.3, and 59.5, and 662.0 keV). The mass attenuation coefficients measured for a set of eight wood species did not vary significantly, allowing a single calibration for determination of bulk density of air-dried wood samples at each energy. The equation for bulk density calibration obtained was validated using a second set of twelve wood species. Comparison of bulk density determined by CT images, using the calibration procedure proposed, with values obtained by gravimetric methods, presented a very good linear correlation coefficient (R2=0.94). The main advantage of CT imaging over conventional techniques for wood bulk density determination is that it allows detection and quantification of heterogeneities and internal defects. At the sub-millimetric spatial resolution level, it is possible to identify morphological and structural aspects of wood samples.

Shoulders are an important element of the highways that provide space for vehicles to stop during an emergency. A well-compacted shoulder provides structural firmness to a pavement by transferring overlying traffic loads to the underlying soil stratum. They provide lateral support to the pavement. In recent years, the use of non-destructive testing devices like Geogauge and Light Weight Deflectometer (LWD) has emerged in our country. The main reason behind this is the inbuilt ability of Geogauge and LWD in the fast estimation of the elastic modulus of a shoulder on top of their ease to port, being cost-effective, the capability to give more amounts of data, etc. Thus, there is a need to assess these devices. The main objective of this paper is to develop correlations between the parameter obtained from these non-destructive devices and destructive test parameterslike dry density and CBR. The tests were conducted on thirty-two locations of road shoulders at the city of Patna, India. Geogauge, LWD and sand replacement or sand cone testing were performed at different locations and soil samples were collected for determination of CBR and water content in the laboratory. The result of regression analysis shows that a significant correlation exists between moduli obtained from the devices under investigation and standard test results i.e. dry density and CBR. These developed correlations may be used by the road engineers for assessment of the quality of the shoulders.

Ensuring the sustainability of road infrastructure cannot be achieved without the continuous application of new knowledge and approaches within individual management steps. A particularly risky stage in the life cycle of existing roads is the operation phase. High attention is paid to the environmental, financial and social impacts and benefits of individual processes applied by road managers. These processes meet in pavement management systems (PMS), which, however, cannot work reliably without the necessary input data. Information on the development of the technical condition of the road can also be included among the most important data. The paper brings the first outputs from several years of research of measurements on the Slovak 1st class road. Its aim is to gradually determine the degradation functions for the needs of Slovak geographical, climatic and transport conditions. The secondary objective is to verify the reliability of non-destructive measurement procedures of the technical condition of the road. Emphasis is placed on the application of such mathematical procedures that can not only reliably bring about the determination of past developments in the roadway, but can also present the expected picture of future developments.
