This paper considers the issue of parental choice, a key aspect of the Picot Report and Tomorrow’s Schools reforms. It seeks to explore two key research questions pertaining to the secondary school sector. Firstly, does the abolition of school zoning lead to greater parental choice? Secondly, do enrolment schemes create more choice for parents and students? The findings suggest that amendments to the Tomorrow’s Schools policy created less choice for some parents, particularly those who were Maori or those of low socio-economic status. It is argued that a level of state intervention is required to ensure fair, transparent selection of students in oversubscribed schools.

This study sought to investigate the influence of parental socio-economic status (SES) on higher academic aspiration among senior secondary school students in Cross River State of Nigeria with emphasis on Ogoja Education Zone. To do this, three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The research questions were based on three variables of parental educational status, occupation and material wealth. The research instrument was a 17 item researcher-made “Parental Socio-economic status and higher academic aspiration of senior secondary school students questionnaire”. It was built on a four-point modified Likert scale. Samples comprised of 600 senior secondary three (SS3) students at the rate of 30 per school from the five local government areas in the education zone. Data were analyzed using simple percentages. The result of research question one which sought to determine the influence of parental educational status on their children’s higher educational aspirations shows that 72.16% of the respondents affirmed that parental educational status has significantly high influence on their wards educational aspiration. Research Question two was on the influence of Parental occupation on their children’s academic aspiration. It had a positive response of 37.99% which shows negative influence. The finding on Research Question three shows that 62% of the respondents were positive about the influence of parental material wealth on their academic aspiration. Based on the above findings conclusion and recommendations were drawn.

The existence of child labor is not a new phenomenon as children are still engaging in all the sector of employment. The objectives of the study was to assess economic status of school going domestic child workers (DCWs), to assess the root causes of DCWs and to examine present working condition of the DCWs. To the end, 50 DCWs studying in Santi Bidhya Griha Higher Secondary School of Kathmandu are selected as respondents. The finding shows that the cause of poverty is an essential factor to increase domestic child worker. DCWs are involving in low level households activities. Their working hour is higher than study period. Remuneration paid for DCWs is very low or not paid, behave of the owner towards DCW's is low or medium in average. The bedding and fooding situations of the DCWs are not found good. Because of that most of them are not yet satisfied with their job but compelling to continue only for their school education life. At present 15 percent of the respondents are studying in primary level, 55 percent in lower secondary level and 30 percent in secondary level. Regarding job satisfaction, some of them want to kick out their job any time but some thoughtful children want to leave after completion of grade tenth. The thoughtful children want to start their professional career in teaching; business and political sectors and few of them also want to join police and army. The main purpose of the present study was to examine school adjustment among secondary school boys and girls in relation to their socio-economic status, parent-child interaction and emotional maturity. It was found that the students having high parent-child interaction have significantly better school adjustment.

The study investigated detecting differential item functioning using item response theory in West African Senior School Certificate English language test in south-south Nigeria. 2 research questions were formulated to guide the study. Using descriptive research survey design for the study, study population was 117845 Senior Secondary 3 students in Edo, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa state. A sample of 1309 (604 males, 705 females) drawn through multi stage sampling technique was used for the study. Two valid instruments titled: Socio-economic status questionnaire (SSQ) and WASSCE/SSCE English language objective test (ELOT) were used to collect data for the study. The reliability indices of the instruments were estimated using the Cronbach Alpha method of internal consistency and Richard Kuderson 20 with coefficient values of .84 for the English Language objective test and .71 for the socio-economic status questionnaire respectively. Chi-square and Lord Wald test statistics statistical technique employed by Item Response Theory for Patient Reported Outcome (IRTPRO) was the technique used in data analysis which provided answers to the research questions at.05 level of significance. On analysis, the result revealed that 13 items functioned differently significant between the male and female group and significantly 23 items differentially functioned between High and low socio-economic status group. Thus, this shows 18% DIF based on gender and 32% based on socio-economic status indicating large DIF and items that are potentially biased. Based on the findings, recommendation were made and one among others was that Item Response theory should be used as DIF detection method by large scale public examination and test developers.

The study was conducted in purposively selected Amreli city of Gujarat State. Five Higher Secondary School were purposively selected from Amreli city i.e., Municipal Girls High School, Ji Ji Ben Forward High School , Smt. S.S. Ajmera School, Smt. Shantaben Haribhai Gajera Sankul and B.N. Virani Higher School having maximum number of adolescence who were willing to participate in this study and were available during the period of data collection. Out of five higher secondary school 30 adolescences girls were randomly selected constituting the total sample of 150 adolescences girls for the present study. Data were collected with the help of structured interview schedule. Frequencies, Percentage and mean per cent score were used for analyzing the data statistically. out that 56.6 per cent of the respondents were from medium socio- economic status whereas 43.3 per cent of the respondents were in low socio-economic status. None of the respondents had high socio-economic status. Nearly half of the respondents (46.7 %) taking IFA (Iron folic acid), 73.3 per cent of the respondents know its benefits and none of the respondents feel any side effect after taking IFA tablets. More than half of the respondents (57.3%) feel weakness, (50.0 %) feel easily tired, feel breathless (13.3%) while doing routing work due to the deficiency of iron. Most of the respondents (70.0 MPS) feel fatigue, dizziness and leg cramps. Majority of the respondents (80.0 %) know that diet make a difference in anemia prevention, inclusion of iron-rich food in daily diet (80.0 %) and green leafy veg nutrition helps in improving iron level (80.0 %), with mean per cent score 70.0.

 The main thrust of the paper is to determine if there is any significant difference between socio – economic status, self-concept and academic performance of SS1 students in Kebbi State. The sample was made up of 360 (180 boys and 180 girls) drawn from the population of senior secondary school one (S.S.I) from six Senior Secondary Schools in Kebbi State. Akinboye’s Adolescent Personal Data Inventory (APDI) by Akinboye (1985) and the Adopted version of Parental Socio- Economic Status Questionnaire (PSESQ) by Adegoke (1987) were used to measure Self-concept and Parental Socio-economic Status respectively. The reliability coefficient of the instruments was (0.85 and 0.79) for APDI and (0.82 and 0.78) for PSESQ respectively. Academic Performance was obtained using the students’ scores in English Language and Mathematics in the Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination of 2015/2016 session. Two hypotheses were generated and tested using t- test. The findings of the study indicated that there was significant difference between Parental Socio-economic Status and Academic Achievement. There was also significant difference between Self-concept and Academic Performance of students. The findings were discussed and their implications and recommendations highlighted. It was recommended that teaching became more meaningful when pupils are assisted to build a positive self-concept. Similarly, parents should show more concern in helping their children develop positive self-concept. Teachers should also take into consideration the socio-economic background of their students.

This study examined the effects of home background on the academic achievements of secondary school students in Sokoto State. It specifically examined the factors and influence on child performance, the efficacy of a family influence for academic success, socio-economic status of parents, the relationship between home background factors and academic achievements. The research design was based on the main tenets of correlational survey design. The sample of the study comprised of 195 secondary schools with a population of 2.066 Students in the three senatorial districts of Sokoto Suite. The Hart Draw Method (HDM) was used in selecting two schools from each zone. Four hypotheses were tested for the study. The data collected for this study were subjected to chi-square tests. The findings revealed that the socio-economic status of the child's home is one of the important predictors of academic achievements in school. It was also observed that parenting styles have been associated with academic success. The following recommendations were made the need to educate parents on the need to create an educationally conducive atmosphere at home, children must be encouraged and not be left to the teacher alone, educators as well student-teacher who are responsible for the education of the future generations should understand what factors influence the learning and achievements of children placed in their care, while parents should provide their children with needed school materials to stimulate intellectual development, to handle students effectively teachers should endeavour to understand their students family background. Authoritarian and permissive methods of parenting styles should be discouraged amongst parents
