<p>This thesis examines what it means to be an inmate as experienced by female inmates serving sentences at Christchurch Women’s Prison. Using an auto-ethnographic methodology, combined with a mixed-methods approach, 82 female inmates completed a questionnaire and 10 were interviewed via semi-structured conversations. The data from the questionnaire are presented and analysed within the context of research from overseas studies. The conversations are further analysed and complemented by my own insider knowledge of prison life. This study was undertaken when I was a serving inmate and I made the decision to situate myself in this body of research. Excerpts from my prison journal entries, consisting of shared personal reflections from my years of imprisonment, are interspersed throughout the thesis. Three primary motivations drove this research. The first was to discover and interrogate what it means to be a prisoner from the prisoner’s perspective. The second was to explore how the prison experience relates to the possibility of future successful reintegration and, finally, I wanted to give women inmates a platform to share their stories in the hope that it would empower them. It achieves all three. The stories that the women shared, and their understandings of lived prison life, illustrate the ineffectiveness of incarceration and its inability to serve as a foundation for successful future reintegration. The findings provide a preliminary platform for further studies in this area and contribute to the extant academic understanding of an often misunderstood population.</p>

Climate change and solutions to solving this wicked problem require a mixed methods research approach that draws on quantitative and qualitative inquiry together. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the applicability (and effectiveness) of a mixed methods approach applied to research into the voluntary carbon market (VCM), a key path available for organisations electing to offset their carbon emissions, in New Zealand. The mixed methods approach included three unique data sets (quantitative documents, quantitative surveys, qualitative in-depth interviews), and was both explanatory (qualitative interviews built upon and contextualized the document analysis and survey results) and convergent (data sets were examined separately, then, as they represent different aspects of the same phenomenon, were combined for analysis). These complementary methods were used to gain a fuller picture of the evolution and institutional dynamics of the VCM field in order to produce a comprehensive case study.

The purpose of this study is to understand whether the seeking of legitimacy from Maori communities by Aotearoa New Zealand energy companies is a historical consistent practice or a result of a proposal of privatization. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports of four different State Owned Enterprises are analyzed longitudinally beginning from 2008 to 2013 with a mixed methods approach. It is found that the NZ energy sector doesn't have a common approach in how it communicates with Maori stakeholders but rather that each organization tailors its interaction with Maori communities based on the circumstances each individual organization is in. The study contributes to research concerning the use of content related to Maori and Maori indigenous values in CSR communication as well as to that research investigating how organizations respond to potential threats to their legitimacy through the use of CSR communication in Aotearoa New Zealand context.

Following a thorough review of the current updated Sport Commitment Model, new candidate commitment sources for possible future inclusion in the model are presented. They were derived from data obtained using the Scanlan Collaborative Interview Method. Three elite New Zealand teams participated: amateur All Black rugby players, amateur Silver Fern netball players, and professional All Black rugby players. An inductive content analysis of these players’ open-ended descriptions of their sources of commitment identified four unique new candidate commitment sources: Desire to Excel, Team Tradition, Elite Team Membership, and Worthy of Team Membership. A detailed definition of each candidate source is included along with example quotes from participants. Using a mixed-methods approach, these candidate sources provide a basis for future investigations to test their viability and generalizability for possible expansion of the Sport Commitment Model.

Introduction: As the development of the time, women committed criminal activities usually dominated by man. That crimes resulted negative stigma by society. So, it requires effective many discharge planning for female inmates to face the freedom. This study is useful for correctional nurses because of nurse basic role for provides female inmates discharge planning.Methods: The study about description female inmate’s discharge planning has already been studied in qualitative method, but it has not yet been studied in quantitative. The research purpose is to know the discharge planning of the return of the inmates in a female prison in Indonesia. This study was descriptive quantitative research method using with cross sectional approach. This research used questionnaire as the instrument. There were 25 samples that chosen by total sampling technique on a women’s prison in Indonesia. The analysis data using univariate analysis.Results: 92% of respondents would plan follow up skills from prisons, 68% of respondents would do legal plan, 100% of respondents would do the plan to maintain physical condition, 70.3% of respondents would do social interaction plan, 98% of respondents would do the mental spiritual plan, 65% of respondents would do the plan to meet the needs of residence and economy. Conclusion: There were various planning of female inmates before release from a prison. Correctional nurses are recommended to give more attention to the psychosocial problems of the women inmates and able to develop discharge planning program for the woman inmates by their freedom so that the inmates are ready to return to the society.

<p>This study focused on the Enviroschools organisation, a provider of education for sustainability in Aotearoa New Zealand. This research used a mixed-methods approach, involving seven schools in the Wellington region. Study one incorporated qualitative methods and gained insight into how the Enviroschools programme works in schools through interviewing teachers. Specifically, this study examined: 1) How the Enviroschools programme is implemented in different schools, 2) How action competence (a key component of the Enviroschools programme) is encouraged in students, and 3) Identified the challenges and benefits that teachers faced when implementing the programme.  The second study used a quantitative approach and aimed to identify if variables from the Theory of Planned Behaviour could predict children’s behaviour intentions. Study two: 1) Explored whether the Theory of Planned Behaviour could predict children’s gardening and waste behaviour intentions, 2) Investigated whether environmental concern could explain behaviour intentions, and 3) Explored whether socio-demographic variables helped explain behaviour intentions.   The results of study one highlighted the different ways in which teachers implemented the Enviroschools programme; this varied from being fully integrated throughout their teaching to offering extra-curricular environmental activities. The challenges and benefits included a lack of support, positive impacts on the community, and the influence of school culture.   The quantitative survey (n=155) found that the Theory of Planned Behaviour variables could predict both Living Landscapes and Zero Waste behaviour intentions. However, environmental concern or socio-demographics did not add to explaining behaviour intentions.   These study findings may benefit the Enviroschools organisation and policy makers who want to improve education for sustainability in New Zealand and know which variables to target to increase children’s engagement in waste and gardening behaviours.</p>

Materials evaluation calls for a systematic and principled approach. In reality, however, materials evaluation in language-learning self-access centers (SACs) is significantly lacking in good models. This paper reports on a project undertaken by SAC facilitators in Japan to investigate whether/how a pre-evaluation checklist developed a decade ago at a SAC in New Zealand (c.f. Reinders & Lewis, 2006) could be adapted to their target context. A mixed methods approach was employed where data was obtained via a Likert-scale questionnaire and follow-up interviews. The survey was adapted from Reinders and Lewis and enrolled 103 Japanese university students. The interviews were conducted to eight randomly selected survey respondents. Results show that the modeled checklist can be used as a basis with modifications allowing for contextual differences. The results suggest that Japanese learners of English value visually stimulating materials and require more guided support for them to effectively use materials beyond the classroom. The article provides an adapted checklist designed for Japanese learners of English as well as suggestions for future research.
