<p>Declines in global marine finfish catches, which accounts for ~15% of the animal protein consumed by humans, has caused a 6-fold increase in total reported catch of invertebrates since 1950. This has led to the over-exploitation and decline of many marine invertebrate fisheries. The red rock lobster (Jasus edwardsii) fishery is New Zealand’s most economically valuable inshore fishery. The current management strategy relies on the assumption that the stock is comprised of a single panmictic population. However, more recent studies have challenged the genetic homogeneity of Jasus edwardsii across the Tasman sea and described high levels of self-recruitment in a Stewart Island subpopulation. A disregard for the underlying genetic structure in the management of a fishery can lead to excessive removal of individuals from populations contributing to the overall genetic diversity of the stock and thus reduce the species adaptability. The ability to adapt to new environments is particularly important in the context of global climate change and can significantly affect the long-term sustainability of the stock. Thus, the goal of this study was to identify specific patterns of genetic diversity of Jasus edwardsii population and provide an interpretation and assessment of the impact on the NZ fishery. The first objective was to optimize and validate molecular and bioinformatic protocols of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) discovery for the red rock lobster Jasus edwardsii. The double digest restriction-site associated DNA (ddRADseq) protocol was optimized for the relatively large red rock lobster genome, which also has a high paralog content. The impact of bioinformatic processing on the population genetic inferences was then assessed by testing three different SNP discovery pipelines with the Rad-loci pipeline producing the most optimal marker discovery rate with a low level of missing data and a low SNP error rate. An analysis of technical replicates confirmed the reproducibility of both the molecular and bioinformatic protocols and also the validated the data generation process suitable for population genetic analyses. The second objective of my thesis was to investigate the genetic structure and population connectivity of adult red rock lobsters. The SNPs discovered were characterised as selectively neutral or under divergent selection (outlier) and both types of markers were analysed using Bayesian model-based clustering (STRUCTURE), non model-based multivariate analysis (Discriminant Analysis of Principal Components (DAPC)) and F-statistics. A lack of population differentiation using neutral genetic markers indicated a high level of gene flow and connectivity between populations. In contrast, there was evidence for selective pressure as a result of the analysis of outlier markers. Three main regions were identified: North-East NZ, North-West NZ and South NZ sub-populations, as part of a larger NZ metapopulation (FST ranged from 0.025 to 0.049, P < 0.001). The results of this study suggested that high levels of gene flow and connectivity are counteracted to some extent by the local selection that promotes the survival and reproduction of locally adapted genotypes. However, the strength of this selective pressure still permits low levels of survival and reproduction of non-optimal genotypes causing allele frequency homogenisation of the new generation of lobsters. The third objective was to investigate the levels of connectivity and adaptive divergence of the red rock lobster pueruli/juvenile lobsters for comparison with pattern of divergence of adult lobster in order to investigate the mechanisms of population structure formation. A suite of Bayesian clustering, non-model multivariate analysis and F-statistics were employed in the assessment of neutral and outlier markers developed for pueruli/juveniles. Similar to adult lobsters, pueruli/juveniles were characterised by a low level of divergence of the neutral markers indicating effective larvae dispersal. Outlier markers detected population differentiation patterns likely to originate from a phenotype – environment mismatch resulting in post-settlement mortality of non-adapted genotypes. The similarity between patterns of genetic divergence of adult lobsters and late juvenile/early juveniles indicates that post-settlement mortality, driven by local environmental conditions, has most likely occurred on earlier developmental stages of Jasus edwardsii, which were not possible to sample in my study.  The final objective was to explore environment–genotype associations of Jasus edwardsii. Biological Environment Stepwise (BEST) analyses, redundancy analyses (RDA) and generalized linear modelling (GLM) consistently indicated a correlation between the annual amplitude of sea surface temperature (SST) and adaptive population divergence. In addition, an influence of spatial distribution on the patterns of adaptive population differentiation was also detected via RDA. From these results I propose a mechanism underlying the patterns of population differentiation discovered in Chapters 3 and 4: a latitudinal gradient of SST appears to be the selective force promoting the adaptive divergence of the lobster populations with local patterns of connectivity distorting the gradient and thus forming three distinct temperature adapted genotypes (North-West, North-East, and South). An environmental association analysis offered 43 candidate loci, which after alignment of transcriptome-mapped reference catalog sequences to annotated protein databases identified a candidate gene for thermal adaptation - UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT). UGT is a detoxification enzyme involved in the metabolization of a variety of endogenous and environmental compounds and its activity and gene expression patterns have been linked to temperature. This study provides evidence for the local adaptations of the NZ population of Jasus edwardsii to SST, which together with the efficient mechanism of larval dispersal creates a system likely resilient to changes in temperature. This feature is important in the light of climate change-induced range shifts and supports the long-term sustainability of the red rock lobster fishery. The three genetically distinct regions identified coincide with existing boundaries of the management units and therefore do not require an adjustment of the current management regime.</p>

The specificities of temperature regime of automorphic clayey soils forming under the suffruticous and shrub vegetation within the zone of tundra and forest tundra in the European North-East were studied. As the objects of investigation we chose the organic cryometamorphic soils and cryometamorphic gleezems; in the both soil types the CRM cryometamorphic horizon is developed. The soils are formed in conditions of long-termed seasonal freezing at the absence (deep occurrence) of the permafrost rocks. The dynamics near the zero temperatures (zero curtains) is characterized. The hypothesis, concerning the role of zero curtains in the sustaining of the specific angular-grainy structure within the mass of cryometamorphic horizons is formulated. The mass of cryometamorphic horizons and the depth of present-day zero curtains, which observed at the long-term seasonal soil freezing, correlate to each other. The impact of suffruticous and shrub vegetation on the specificities of winter and summer soil temperature regime is determined. We discovered that the main differences between the soils developing under suffruticous and shrub vegetation tundras are stipulated by the different intensity of the snow accumulation within these areas. The soils that are developed under the shrub vegetation are warmer than soils developed under the suffruticous tundra, where permafrost may occur at the depth of 2-3 cm. In general, seasonaly freezing tundra soils are located in the middle of the range of the automorphic clay loamy soils in the tundra-taiga ecotone of European North-East of Russia, and occupy the niche between permafrost tundra and non-permafrost north taiga soils.

The industrial policy in the UK and in Portugal, as in most EU countries, seeks to attract new investment capacity, to create jobs and to promote the impact of the so-called "demonstration efect" of "greenfield" development strategies pursued in the new plants of inward investors on existing or "brownfield" plants. This industrial policy focus is particularly evident in the automobile industry.This paper compares the industrial policy oriented towards the automobile industry in the UK and in Portugal. Two recent "greenfield" investments are analised: Nissan in the North-East region (UK) and Ford/VW in the Setúbal Peninsula (Portugal), as well as three "brownfield" plants: Ford Halewood and GM Vauxhall Ellesmere Port in the North-West region (UK) and Renault in Setúbal (Portugal). The first part starts with a discussion of industrial policy in the automobile sector, the role of "greenfield" development strategies and the "demonstration effect" on "brownfield" plants. Then, the limits of new inward investment are pointed out, basically their problems and restrictions. Afterwards, the structural barriers to the "demonstration effect" within "brownfield" plants are outlined and some possabilities for alternative "brownfield" development strategies are presented.

The impact of long term climate change that imparts stress on forest could be perceived by studying the regime shift of forest ecosystem. With the change of significant precipitation, forest may go through density change around globe at different spatial and temporal scale. The 100 class high resolution (60 meter spatial resolution) Indian vegetation type map was used in this study recoded into four broad categories depending on phrenology as (i) forest, (ii) scrubland, (iii) grassland and (iv) treeless area. The percentage occupancy of forest, scrub, grass and treeless were observed as 19.9&amp;thinsp;%, 5.05&amp;thinsp;%, 1.89&amp;thinsp;% and 7.79&amp;thinsp;% respectively. Rest of the 65.37&amp;thinsp;% land area was occupied by the cropland, built-up, water body and snow covers. The majority forest cover were appended into a 5&amp;thinsp;km&amp;thinsp;&amp;times;&amp;thinsp;5&amp;thinsp;km grid, along with the mean annual precipitation taken from Bioclim data. The binary presence and absence of different vegetation categories in relates to the annual precipitation was analyzed to calculate their resilience expressed in probability values ranging from 0 to 1. Forest cover observed having resilience probability (Pr) &amp;lt;&amp;thinsp;0.3 in only 0.3&amp;thinsp;% (200&amp;thinsp;km<sup>2</sup>) of total forest cover in India, which was 4.3&amp;thinsp;% &amp;lt;&amp;thinsp;0.5&amp;thinsp;Pr. Majority of the scrubs and grass (64.92&amp;thinsp;% Pr&amp;thinsp;&amp;lt;&amp;thinsp;0.5) from North East India which were the shifting cultivation lands showing low resilience, having their high tendency to be transform to forest. These results have spatial explicitness to highlight the resilient and non-resilient distribution of forest, scrub and grass, and treeless areas in India.

The global crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic among the population and at the level of companies, state institutions, etc., underlined the importance of analysing its impact at different levels (intern, national and international level). The concepts of sustainability, development and growth must be aware, adapted and implemented more and more frequently, even constantly, in order to cope with the current evolution of the economy (and not only). The paper is an empirical research conducted in the North-East Region of Romania, aiming to analyse the impact of COVID-19 on local companies (especially SME’s), in the context of existing correlation between the COVID-19 impact on resizing, restricting, changing the number of active employees, changing revenue, changing turnover and changing profit, based on the Spearman correlation coefficients. In this sense, it was important to implement sustainability strategies and ensure the activity and resources of companies in the long term, because the effects of an economic crisis (natural resources, human resources, not only financial) are felt in 2021 and will be felt in the future 10 years. The paper concludes with two practical solutions to ensure the sustainability of the companies involved in the study, solutions that can be applied by all companies that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The endangered Moorish tortoise Testudo graeca is the unique terrestrial chelonian species in North-west Africa. In west-central Morocco, the endemic subspecies, the Souss valley tortoise T. g. soussensis, occupies semi-arid to arid low-quality habitats, and is subject to serious threats. A long-term mark-recapture programme from 2001 to 2012 allowed estimating population size and structure, sex ratio, and survivorship in one of the well-known populations in a degraded and overgrazed arid steppe-land of west-central Morocco. Spring population size considerably decreased to more than half in less than 10 years, with a mean density lower than 3 ind.ha-1 in 2012 compared to its last known density estimat-ed in 2003. In spring 2012, the population structure exhibited an unbalanced male-biased sex ratio (61:39) and a scarcity of juveniles (<5%). We identified five major conservation problems in the study area: (i) habitat destruction and overgrazing; (ii) over-collecting of tortoises for pet trade , iii) direct dis-turbance; iv) tortoise handling mostly for field research, and v) increased extinction risk due to the small population size. We carried out a population viability analysis using the VORTEX software based on published and obtained data on population and life history parameters. With no management action, the population will go extinct during the forthcoming 40 years after the last estimate. The most efficient management option for a long-term persistence of the population would be reducing the nest and neo-nate mortality by 90%. To attenuate the impact of the threatening factors, we developed a management plan that includes population reinforcement and habitat restoration options.

Research background: Because the active labour market policy requires high resources, it is important to analyse the effectiveness of its instruments. For the unemployment, it is essential to identify the groups of persons threatened by the long-term unemployment, to assess the impact of programmes on exit from unemployment and monitoring the disbursement of funds. Purpose of the article: The goal of the article was identification of clusters of poviats in Poland with respect to cost and employment effectiveness of basic forms of professional activisation in the years 2008–2014. Methods: The poviats were clustered by means of the k-means method. Variables were standardised and the number of clusters was determined by means of the v-fold cross-validation. Findings & Value added: The analysis did not allow to unambiguously specify areas in Poland with better use of funds allocated in the activisation programmes. The poviats in the middle-east Poland were generally characterized by worse values of effectiveness. However, the unemployment rate in these areas was relatively small. On the contrary, the poviats in the north-east Poland had high unemployment rate and the funds were used effectively. Assessment of effectiveness of forms of professional activisation is very important because the activities of poviat labour offices influence the counteraction to unemployment.

The effectiveness of two monitoring programs, designed to describe and quantify the bycatch from commercial pots, was examined in the South Australian rock lobster (Jasus edwardsii) fishery (SARLF). The first, logbook sampling, relied on information collected and recorded by fishers in logbooks. The second, bycatch sampling, required fishers to collect bycatch specimens on a nominated day for later scientific analysis. A total of 40 bycatch species were recorded during the study. Finfish, mainly blue-throat wrasse (Notolabrus tetricus) and leather jacket species (Meuschenia hippocrepis and Meushenia australis), were the major component (>90% by number). Data from the logbook program were appropriate for monitoring spatio-temporal trends in bycatch, whereas the bycatch sampling provided more accurate information on bycatch species. Each program was subject to bias when estimating total bycatch numbers and, as a result, a combination of both methods indicated a cost-effective and appropriate way with which to monitor bycatch from the fishery. In comparison with other fisheries, bycatch from the SARLF was relatively low; however, because bycatch was dominated by relatively few species, ongoing monitoring and risk assessment of these populations is needed to ensure long-term sustainability of bycatch levels.

&lt;p&gt;Overall, global forests are expected to contribute about a quarter of pledged mitigation under the Paris Agreement, by limiting deforestation and by encouraging forest regrowth.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Secondary Forests in the Neo-tropics have a large climate mitigation potential, given their ability to sequester carbon up to 20 times faster than old-growth forests. However, this rate does not account for the spatial patterns in secondary forest regrowth influenced by regional and local-scale environmental and anthropogenic disturbance drivers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Secondary Forests in the Brazilian Amazon are expected to play a key role in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, however, the Amazon is a large and geographically complex region such that regrowth rates are not uniform across the biome.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To understand the impact of key drivers we used a multi-satellite data approach with the aim of understanding the spatial variations in secondary forest regrowth in the Brazilian Amazon. We mapped secondary forest area and age using a land-use-land-cover dataset &amp;#8211; MapBiomas &amp;#8211; and, combined with the European Space Agency Aboveground Carbon dataset, constructed regional regrowth curves for the year 2017.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We found large variations in the regrowth rates across the Brazilian Amazon due to large-scale environmental drivers such as rainfall and shortwave-radiation. Regrowth rates are similar to previous pan-Amazonian estimates in the North-West (3 &amp;#177;1.0 MgC ha&lt;sup&gt;-1&lt;/sup&gt; yr&lt;sup&gt;-1&lt;/sup&gt;), which are double than those in the North-East Amazon (1.3 &amp;#177;0.3 MgC ha&lt;sup&gt;-1&lt;/sup&gt; yr&lt;sup&gt;-1&lt;/sup&gt;). The impact of anthropogenic disturbances, namely fire and repeated deforestation prior to the most recent regrowth only reduces the regrowth by 20% in the North-West (2.4 &amp;#177;0.8 MgC ha&lt;sup&gt;-1&lt;/sup&gt; yr&lt;sup&gt;-1&lt;/sup&gt;) compared to 55% in the North-East (0.8 &amp;#177;0.8 MgC ha&lt;sup&gt;-1&lt;/sup&gt; yr&lt;sup&gt;-1&lt;/sup&gt;). Overall, secondary forest carbon stock of 294 TgC in the year 2017, could have been 8% higher with avoided fires and repeat deforestation.&lt;strong&gt; &lt;/strong&gt;We found that the 2017 area of secondary forest, which occupies only ~4% of the Brazilian Amazon biome, can contribute significantly (~5.5%) to Brazil&amp;#8217;s net emissions reduction targets, accumulating ~19.0 TgC yr&lt;sup&gt;-1&lt;/sup&gt;until 2030 if the current area of secondary forest is maintained (13.8 Mha). However,this value reduces rapidly to less than 1% if only secondary forests older than 20 years are preserved (2.2 Mha).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Preserving the remaining old-growth forest carbon stock and implementing legal mechanisms to protect and expand secondary forest areas are key to realising the potential of secondary forest as a nature-based climate change mitigation solution.&lt;/p&gt;

ABSTRACTThe Upper West Region in northern Ghana is a major source area of migrants who travel to southern Ghana seasonally or for longer periods. This has important implications for the lives and livelihoods of the migrants themselves and their relatives at home. Almost invariably the impact of out-migration on sending areas has been studied using ‘Western’ academic parameters. Little is known about how the people hemselves value the profound changes that migration causes in their societies. In this article, findings are presented from interviews with 204 rural household heads who were asked to express their opinion about the consequences of seasonal, long-term and return migration. A quantitative approach to qualitative data was adopted to differentiate between collective perceptions and individual opinions. It was found that almost all respondents were positive about the consequences of seasonal labour migration. They applauded its contribution to food security and considered it one of the few ways of gaining access to money and goods. The respondents were much more ambivalent about the consequences of long-term migration and return migration. On the positive side, they emphasized that out-migration reduced the pressure on farmland, and that some migrants attain higher living standards, both for themselves and for their relatives at home. On the negative side, many long-term migrants are not able to improve their livelihoods or lose their interest in the home community. The lack of support of some migrants is greatly lamented, especially if they later return empty-handed and become a burden on their relatives at home. The methodology used in this study yielded a holistic view of the consequences of migration on the source area as seen through the eyes of the home community
