<p>This study explores how participation in collaborative inquiry opens space for an expanded set of understandings and practices for mathematics teaching | learning. It examines the affordances of collaborative inquiry to promote, or constrain, teacher learning in the context of teachers’ day to day work.  Sociocultural perspectives underpin the study whereby professional learning is presumed to be situated in the social and cultural contexts of teachers’ work. A survey of the literature supports the assumption that persistent underachievement in mathematics for some groups of learners requires shifts in what teachers know and can do and reveals the importance of collaboration and inquiry for teacher learning.  The study involved a participatory, design-based approach underpinned by an authentic and appreciative inquiry stance. Design-based research was chosen for its proximity to practice and its focus on connections between the enactment of learning designs and outcomes of interest. The research was iterative and cyclical whereby the researcher worked with a group of four teachers in one New Zealand primary school to design, implement and refine an approach to teachers’ collaborative inquiry. A range of data were gathered during a 6-month collaboration, including from teacher interviews, classroom observations and three-weekly group meetings. The analysis took a pragmatic and multi-theoretical approach to examine what it meant to design and enact teachers’ collaborative inquiry. Cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) was employed to capture the complexity of the teachers’ collaborative inquiry activity and to analyse and interpret the contradictions that arose.  A key finding was that a co-teaching inquiry approach fostered conditions that afforded teachers’ expanded access to and depth of engagement with new, and often dissonant, practice ideas. Through co-teaching, mathematics teaching | learning was restructured within three interconnected fields of practice: the teachers’ enacted practice, their talk about practice, and their noticing of student thinking within practice. The co-teaching inquiry activity was increasingly directed at a collective purpose; involved an interplay of risk and trust; supported shifts in teachers’ roles and responsibilities; and allowed teachers to constantly renegotiate the goals of their shared activity. The co-teaching arrangement disrupted practice whereby teachers’ actions served as minor interruptions to each other’s practice and thus became a resource for teacher learning. Opportunities to engage deeply with one another’s practice opened space for an expanded set of actions for each of the teachers in their own practice.  This thesis adds nuanced understandings of the interrelated roles of collaboration and inquiry in improving teaching. It contributes to the growing body of literature exploring co-teaching arrangements for teacher learning, in this case in the previously under-examined context of teachers’ collaborative inquiry for their ongoing professional learning. It offers insights into how co-teaching might support teachers to enact new and challenging pedagogies aimed at addressing the persistent and considerable challenges posed by an ethical imperative to promote mathematics learning for diverse (all) students. Participating in the co-construction of a design for their collaborative inquiry enabled teachers to restructure their work and expand the possibilities for their individual and collective practice. It allowed teachers to reconstruct their identities from the lone operator whose professional reputation needs protection from exposure of any weaknesses in their mathematics knowledge or practice, to a learner whose naïve questions and gaps in practice served as a resource for all in their learning.</p>

In this paper, we present an emerging set of learning conjectures and design principles to be used in the development of professional learning tasks that support elementary teachers’ learning of mathematics learning trajectories. We outline our theoretical perspective on teacher knowledge of learning trajectories, review the literature concerning mathematics professional learning tasks, offer a set of initial conjectures about teacher learning of learning trajectories, and articulate a set of principles to guide the design of tasks. We conclude with an example of one learning trajectory professional learning task taken from our current research project.Diseño de tareas de aprendizaje profesional para trayectorias de aprendizaje de matemáticasEn este artículo, presentamos un conjunto emergente de conjeturas de aprendizaje y de principios de diseño para ser empleados en el desarrollo de tareas de aprendizaje profesional que apoyan el aprendizaje de trayectorias de aprendizaje de matemáticas de maestros de primaria. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kemampuan model pembelajaran guru dalam mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir siswa kelas XI pada pembelajaran matematika di MA Miftahul Ulum Mranggen Demak Tahun Pelajaran 2019/2020. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan metode kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah guru matematika dan peserta didik di MA Miftahul Ulum Mranggen Demak dengan jumlah 7 orang. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian adalah sebagai berikut: 1) Guru matematika di MA Miftahul Ulum Mranggen Demak merupakan tipe guru yang efektif. Hal itu terlihat dari semangatnya dalam bekerja, keramahannya kepada siswa sehingga mampu menjadi komunikator yang baik antara guru dengan siswa, melakukan persiapan pembelajaran dengan baik, dan memiliki cara tersendiri dalam mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir siswa. 2) Upaya yang dilakukan guru matematika di MA Miftahul Ulum Mranggen Demak agar siswa dapat berpartisipasi aktif dalam pembelajaran untuk mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir siswa diantaranya guru memberikan motivasi, dan memberikan penghargaan kepada siswa. 3) Peran dan tugas guru matematika dalam mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir siswa disini sudah terlaksana dengan efektif, yaitu dengan adanya guru sudah mendidik, mengajar, dan melatih siswa dengan baik, guru mampu menarik simpati siswa sehingga siswa mampu menerima materi yang disampaikan tanpa terpaksa dan mudah dipahami dan siswa mampu mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir.Kata Kunci: Kemampuan Guru; Keterampilan Berpikir; Pembelajaran MatematikaAbstractThis study aims to describe the ability of teacher learning models in developing class XI learning in mathematics learning in MA Miftahul Ulum Mranggen Demak 2019/2020 Academic Year. This research uses desriptive qualitative methods. The subjects of this study were mathematics teachers and students in MA Miftahul Ulum Mranggen Demak with total of 7 people. Data collection techniques using interviews, and settings. The results of the study are as follows: 1) The mathematics teacher at MA Miftahul Ulum Mranggen Demak is an effective type of teacher. This can be seen from his enthusiasm in working, improving it for students so that they are able to communicate well with the teacher, prepare well for learning, and have a special way of developing student thinking learning. 2) the efforts made by the mathematics teacher at MA Miftahul Ulum Mranggen Demak so that students can communicate in learning to develop student skills that provide motivation, and give appreciation to students. 3) the role and task of mathematics teachers in developing students “thinking skills here has been carried out effectively, namely by having teachers who have educated, taughte and trained students well, teachers are able to attract students” sympathy so that students can receive the material delivered easily and fun and students are able to develop thinking skills.Keywords: Theacher’s Ability, Thinking Skills; Mathematics Learning

Background/Context Despite calls for equity in education, the dominant mode of schooling reproduces hierarchies, positioning some students as bright, gifted, or fast learners and others as lazy, in need of remediation, or slow. A number of studies have shown that teachers’ professional communities and networks can address this problem and enhance outcomes for all students. However, more research is needed not only to show the structure of supportive networks but also to explain the mechanisms through which they foster teacher learning. Research Questions This paper addresses three questions: (a) Where do teachers encounter resources that support their engagement with nondominant, equity-oriented teaching practice? (b) What kinds of resources support teachers’ engagement with nondominant teaching practice? and (c) How do different kinds of resources come together to support teachers’ patterns of engagement with communities of nondominant teaching practice? Research Design A multisite case study was conducted over the course of an academic year. The study involved extensive observations in routine teacher meetings and professional development settings, as well as classroom observations and teacher interviews. Participants Participants included 18 mathematics teachers from two diverse urban high schools. The mathematics departments at both schools expressed commitments to professional learning and collaboration in order to better serve their diverse student bodies, in particular, to support students who had previously been unsuccessful. Six teachers were selected as focal teachers for more in-depth observation and interviewing. This paper describes the contrasting cases of four teachers. Findings Two of the focal teachers maintained close engagement with nondominant, equity-oriented practice throughout the period of the study, while two did not. A comparison of teachers’ professional support networks showed that their patterns of engagement were related to their connections to sources outside their school-based communities and the access that these connections provided to four distinct types of resources. The two teachers who maintained their engagement with reforms were found to have abundant and personally significant identity resources, which were critical for their ongoing learning. Although the other two teachers had technical resources for engaging with reforms, they did not have such identity resources. Conclusions/Recommendations Research and practice have tended to focus on technical aspects of teacher learning in service of reform. This paper suggests that teachers need not only more resources, but also more kinds of resources in order to sustain the learning that student-centered, equity-oriented reforms require.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine what teachers notice in their own enactment of eight high leverage practices as well as the patterns of interactions between the teachers and their peers when participating in video-based lesson study.Design/methodology/approachEach teacher taught and uploaded video from one lesson to a platform, which allowed video annotation, for their lesson study team. There were nine lesson study teams. This study used a qualitative design to examine the teachers' comments on their own videos as well as the patterns in the comments between peers on lesson study teams.FindingsTeachers noticed both positive instantiations as well as opportunities for growth in their enactment of: using and connecting mathematical representations, posing purposeful questions and supporting students' productive struggle. Analysis displayed a pattern of exchanges where peers coached, validated, empathized and pushed each other beyond their comfort zone as critical peers.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough not all lesson study teams were made up of school-based teams and the teachers shared short recordings of their teaching, this research contributes to the understanding of how adapting lesson study by using video can help teachers notice their instantiation of teaching practices and peers can support and push one another towards ambitious instruction. Future research could extend this work by investigating the impact of video-based lesson study on teachers in isolated areas who may not have professional learning networks.Practical implicationsVideo-based LS may help to overcome barriers to the implementation of lesson study, such as the challenge of scheduling a common release time for lesson observation and the financial burden of funding substitute teachers for release time.Originality/valueThe current realities of COVID-19 creates an opportunity for mathematics educators to reimagine teacher professional development (PD) in ways that push the field forward. In light of this disruption, the authors propose an innovative model of utilizing video-based Lesson Study (LS; Lewis, 2002) with peer coaching to offer PD opportunities with methodological considerations for both mathematics researchers and teacher practitioners. The authors document and analyze a collection of online LSs that were taught by a focal teacher and recorded for the peers in the LS group. Video-based LS PD structure allowed the authors to examine how they can leverage this online model of LS to analyze student thinking and learn about teaching rich tasks in an online environment using eight teaching practices. Through their paper the authors will detail the necessary features of online LS specifically using a video annotation tool like Goreact and how video can be used to enhance the professional learning of the mathematics teaching practices (MTPs; NCTM, 2014) and the noticing of student thinking (Jacobs et al., 2010; Sherin and van Es, 2009; van Es and Sherin, 2002, 2008). In addition, the authors will document the norms that were established in the online LS community that impacted collaboration of LS teams and developed strong peer coaching relationships. The online LS PD design also supports collaboration of teachers from varying contexts, promotes professional growth and demonstrates how educators might leverage peer coaches as social capital within their schools to develop teachers along the professional continuum.

The background of this research is the lack of students' mathematics learning outcomes. Thelow yield caused by the learning of mathematics teaching is so very boring, monotonous,stressful and meaningless. Departing from the problems that occur in the field, especially ingrade IV SDN 002 Bagan Besar then there needs to be a strategy that can provide learningmathematics is expected to show active learning, creative, effective and fun. This research istindaan class (PTK), instrument collecting data observation and test learning outcomes. Theresults obtained: Increased activity of the students from the first cycle to the second cycle arevery significant. The increase in active learning, creative, and fun efekif the students alsofollowed by an increase in student learning outcomes. This is evidenced by the increase in thelearning outcomes of the first cycle to the second cycle. Namely, from the average value of 88,27 (cycle I) increased to an average value of 97, 59 (cycle II).

Teacher professional learning occurs across various contexts. Previous studies on teacher learning and changes in practice have focused on either classroom contexts or learning communities outside of school, but have rarely investigated teacher learning across multiple contexts. Investigating teacher learning across the double contexts of classroom and learning community has presented methodological challenges. In response, this paper proposes the suitability of adopting a socio-cultural development framework to further the analytical approach to such challenges. Using the framework, this paper considers the case study of a middle school mathematics teacher who resolved a problem of teaching practice through interacting with other members of the community of practice where they build shared goals and knowledge. This paper contributes to the field by expanding the scope of research on teacher learning across these two contexts, in which problem of practice becomes conceptual resources that the teacher uses in her teaching practice.

The dominant mode of instructional delivery in Ghanaian Colleges of Education has been the conventional face-to-face. However, the second semester of the 2019/2020 academic year teaching had to be done via an emergency remote online teaching mode due to the novel covid-19 pandemic. In a cross-sectional survey, the online mathematics learning experienced of 497 students sampled from three Colleges of education in Ghana were explored using the adapted community of inquiry survey instrument. It was observed from the study that students’ online mathematics learning experiences were low. Further observation showed that while class cohesion and resolution dimensions were absent, teaching presence, exploration, affective expression, and triggering event dimensions of students’ online mathematics learning experiences were present. Additionally, the results showed that the difference in the magnitude of means in gender was partly dependent on the category of internet use before the remote online mathematics teaching was observed in the dimension of lack of class cohesion. Besides, the students were generally indifferent in their learning experiences regarding genders but significantly in terms of their internet use before the remote online mathematics teaching. Based on the results, implications of the state of the college of education (CoE) students’ online mathematics learning experiences and suggestions for improvement have been proposed.
