First raised in 1980s, Task-based Instruction (TBI) is an effective teaching method advocated by many foreign language researchers, focusing on the use of authentic language and on asking students to do various kinds of meaningful tasks through the target language. Based on a study carried out in Leshan Normal University, the writer proves that the application of TBI to college English reading teaching can greatly intrigue non-English majors, help them build their self-confidence in English study, cultivate their sense of cooperation in the process of carrying out classroom activities and tasks with their classmates and thus to improve non-English majors’ reading ability. In addition, some suggestions to TBI are also presented for further studies.

English reading is of vital significance in English learning. In proficiency tests such as CET-4, CET-6, IELTS and TOFEL, extensive reading accounts for a large proportion in scores. Those who do well in reading tend to get higher scores. However, the current English teaching situation doesn’t show its significance: the in-class time is limited with only two classes each week, and it’s difficult to decide appropriate textbooks for teachers. As a result, students can’t figure out the significance of extensive reading course and think little of it. Since the Internet appears in every aspect of our daily life, we can combine extensive reading course with the Internet. By using our spare time to reading fragmented information in English from the Internet selected and instructed by the teacher in any place, we bring fragmented reading into extensive reading teaching. In this paper, the author aims to assume a new teaching model concerning fragmented reading in details. Through this new teaching model, students can not only read English materials in classroom, but also after class in any place with their spare time. With much more input of English both in and out of class, their reading ability will be improved and they are more ready to deal with proficiency tests of all kinds. Meanwhile, students’ interests will be aroused and their horizons will be broadened, which are also helpful for students to pass all kinds of proficiency tests.

<em>Reading is a primary avenue of language input and the spread of knowledge. Some EFL learners focus on vocabulary and grammar, but ignore the broader relationship between words, sentences and paragraphs in reading. Due to this, it is of great necessity to introduce discourse analysis to English reading teaching because of its potential to improve students’ discourse awareness and reading comprehension. While discourse analysis covers three aspects, structure of discourse, cohesion and coherence, and background information and context, this paper aimed to identify the ideal focus of discourse-based English reading teaching and to uncover pedagogical differences between English majors and non-English majors in Chinese universities. The research findings show that Chinese students have a good sense of discourse in general, and the main difference between English majors and non-English majors is that English majors are more inclined to grasp the main idea by analyzing the structure of discourse. The pedagogical implication is that if discourse-based reading teaching is applied for non-English major students, it should focus more on reading strategies related to the structure of discourse.</em>

English reading is an important way to consolidate and expand English language knowledge, and it is also an important way to obtain information and understand British and American culture. Therefore, reading teaching has always been an important part of English education and teaching at all levels and types of schools, and college English teaching is no exception. College English teachers have been carrying out teaching reflections in their reading teaching practice and constantly exploring teaching modes and teaching directions that improve students’ reading engagement and reading comprehension ability. However, the current daily teaching of English reading still generally maintains the traditional teaching mode. The entire reading learning process is monotonous, boring, and stylized, and the ability to acquire and process information cannot be combined with language knowledge and language skills. This kind of teaching mode severely inhibited the college students’ involvement in English learning model. Based on the electromagnetic-polarization response expression in a uniformly polarized half-space, this paper transforms the problem of polarization parameter extraction into a minimum optimization problem and constructs a fitness function. A set of polarization parameters is selected to calculate the electromagnetic-polarization response under trapezoidal waves in a uniform half-space, and the basic particle swarm algorithm is used to extract single and multiple parameters, respectively. In this paper, by adding a window to the test data in the time domain, the multiplicative and additive interference in the test signal is suppressed, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the test result is improved. We use the platform built in this article to wirelessly test the temperature characteristics of the surface acoustic wave sensor. The research results identified eight cognitive attributes of English reading and successfully generated diagnostic information at the group and individual levels and finally formed graphics and textual diagnostic feedback. There is a certain correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and English reading performance, which shows that the vocabulary teaching method can help students better understand the reading materials and improve their reading performance. Combining two student interviews and learning logs, it can be seen that students’ understanding and frequency of use of vocabulary knowledge have increased significantly after the action research. It is generally recognized that vocabulary has a positive effect on improving reading level and can be based on the recognition and understanding of vocabulary. The mastery of vocabulary can promote the improvement of college students’ English reading level to a certain extent. Learners should strengthen vocabulary learning and face up to the importance of vocabulary knowledge in English reading.

To improve students’ reading ability is one of the fundamental requirements for English teaching for English majors. However, some English majors are not interested in reading English and lack motivation to learn it. Even teachers may lose enthusiasm to teach them English. As a result, teaching English reading is inefficient.Application of multimodality in teaching English has attracted many researchers’ attention; the author applies multimodality to teaching English reading and attempts to answer the following question: Is the application of multimodality to teaching English reading effective? An experiment is carried out in two parallel classes for a whole term. In the experimental class, multimodality is applied in teaching reading and teaching procedures are all designed according to the theory of elements of designing multimodality while in the control class, ordinary multimedia teaching is applied. The data of pre-test, reading quizzes, a post-test are analyzed by SPSS 16.0. The research finds out that on the one hand, the application of multimodality in teaching reading is indeed effective. On the other hand, multimodal teaching is more popular among English majors for it can help activate classroom atmosphere, inspire students’ motivation to read after class and build up their confidence in learn English, especially English reading. The author also provides the suggestions for English teaching based on the research findings.
