Women are still often imaged positively by the authorities in the public sphere. This can be seen from some of the elements contained in the images, including in the text "Dear Sweet Wife / Mother wearing the left lane" on banner safety riding ads. The prominence of the term 'WIFE' and the term 'MOM' instead shows the passive position of women who are only positioned as 'silent' subjects to wait for their partner to return. But in this case, the rules of traffic order become the representation of the symbolic phallus. This study uses a qualitative method which in the study of cultural studies is described by Paul Willis as a model of reflexive methodology, where the emphasis lies in theoretical awareness and interest, to reach the depth of 'reality'. The results emphasize that the image of women remains served as a passive subject and tend to be obedient to all transcendent rules. So, it is not excessive if in the end, this image also represents an inferiority in women. However, it really directs, herds, and encourages its viewers to always bring their own narcissistic desires. The woman in the image has been mythical, and soon she becomes part of the banality in the spaces of society.

The infiltration of the Salafis into the Muhammadiyah organization became a continuing reality. This reality is driven by symptoms of the strengthening of the concept of salafism in the organization that founded by KH. Ahmad Dahlan. This study seeks to analyze the Salafi da’wah against the Charitable Business of Muhammadiyah in Taman, Sidoarjo, which is always resistant. This research uses a qualitative method with a naturalistic interpretive approach. The findings of this study reveal that Salafis offer "thinking" in every Muhammadiyah Business Charity institution in Sidoarjo. Salafis try to "dress" Muhammadiyah, but still have their mindset and ideology. With the thought movement, the Salafi propaganda model is carried out through infiltration, agitation, and propaganda within the Muhammadiyah Charitable Enterprises. This is not uncommon to cause resistance and even conflict between the two. The author recommends several efforts that must be made by the Muhammadiyah management: First, the power approach. The Muhammadiyah leadership must act firmly against Salafis through established rules. Second, the intellectual approach. This approach can be done by way of scientific dialogue in the public sphere, criticizing Salafis, as well as affirming the Muhammadiyah manhaj.

Scholarly works on the way Indonesian Muslims perceive and respond to a pandemic—including Covid-19—have left an untouched theoretical gap. Works on pandemics or plagues mostly consist of sporadic and preliminary brief reflective pieces. This article endeavors to fill the academic gap concerning this theme. This article seeks to portray the dynamics of the religious disputes among Indonesian Muslims about the Covid-19 pandemic that affects the entire world. Using a qualitative method of analysis based on data derived from various sources - such as social and non-social media like newspapers and such - the paper argues that the public sphere serves as an open stage to contest ideas among society members where ideas based on sacred and scientific texts are publicly tested. While the majority of Muslims comply with the official disease prevention protocol, others resist it on the grounds that the protocol might undermine the spirit of Islam and the quality of the faith. Their resistance to some degree indicates the dominance of the deductive paradigm that religious authority is endangered in the public sphere.

This essay reviews John Hartley's Popular Reality: Journalism, Modernity, Popular Culture. The significance of this text is that it provides one of the most developed engagements with the public sphere literatures from an author within cultural studies. The article necessarily addresses the considerable weaknesses in Hartley's understanding of the public sphere case. However, the aim is not to dismiss Popular Reality out of hand. Rather, the critique highlights the methodological and ethical differences between analyses based in cultural studies and ‘critical sociology’. Hartley does partially recognise the significance of recent feminist critiques to the much-needed critical reconstruction of the public sphere thesis. The article acknowledges this insight and then moves to a discussion of the ways in which a reconstructed conception of the public sphere thesis might not only be of value to media studies but also to a settlement between cultural studies and ‘critical sociology’.

In literary works, films cannot be separated from life, one of which discusses the issue of discrimination against women, a phenomenon that continues to be actively debated in society and gave birth to the feminism movement. Feminism can also appear through films, one of which is Merry Riana. Therefore, this paper aims to find out what is meant by feminism and how feminism is reflected in films and associated with liberal feminism. This study uses a qualitative method with sources from the original Merry Riana video. The writer uses data collection techniques from online sources. The data were collected by watching the film and understanding the film's dialogue several times and making observations to strengthen the analysis using the semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Pierce. The results of this study indicate that: (1) 8 data indicate the presence of elements of feminism in Merry Riana's action. (2) Feminism is shown through Signs, Objects and Interpreters. (3) In liberal feminism, it proves that women are not only focused on the private sphere, but can also be in the public sphere. Key words: Literature, Movie, Merry Riana, Feminism
