The purpose of this study is to broaden the resource-based view by examining the effects of entrepreneurial culture on SMEs performance, and to analyze the role of entrepreneurial competence in mediating the effects of entrepreneurial culture on business performance. The study used a quantitative approach, carried out on tourism-supporting SME companies in Batu City. Collecting data using a questionnaire with a sample of 117 SMEs selected randomly. The analysis technique uses PLS-SEM to test the hypothesis. Research findings reveal that business performance in SMEs will be determined by the entrepreneurial culture and entrepreneurial competence of the owners/managers. Entrepreneurial competence can be achieved if the owners/managers have a strong entrepreneurial culture. Research confirms the resource-based view that entrepreneurial competence as a superior resource will provide a competitive advantage, so that it plays a role in achieving business performance. It is important for SMEs to strengthen the entrepreneurial culture in order to achieve business performance, because the entrepreneurial culture will direct the behavior of owners/managers to improve their competencies, which will realize business performance. More extensive research is needed to improve the level of generalization, in addition, further researchers consider the role of dynamic capability in relation to competence and business performance.

The aim of this study is to investigate the role of environmental dynamism in relation to dynamic capabilities and competitive advantage. This study uses a quantitative approach and type of explanatory research. The survey was conducted at 130 MSMEs in Malang Raya. Hypothesis testing using SEM-PLS. The findings of the study prove that environmental dynamism is a driver for dynamic capability, while providing evidence that environmental dynamism acts as a negative moderator for achieving competitive advantage. Another finding is that dynamic capabilities have a major effect on competitive advantage while simultaneously acting as fully mediating environmental dynamism with competitive advantage. The implication is important for MSMEs to develop dynamic capabilities in order to deal with environmental dynamism so that MSMEs can increase competitive advantage because if they do not develop dynamic capabilities, environmental dynamism will reduce MSME's competitive advantage.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between customer relationship management (CRM) and competitive advantage and to analyze the role of innovation capabilities in mediating CRM with a competitive advantage. In addition, it examines the role of competitive advantage on retail business performance. The study was conducted on retail companies in Indonesia using a quantitative approach, and responses from 255 retail owners/managers were obtained via the random sampling method. The analysis technique used is structural equation modeling (SEM) using SmartPLS software. The research findings reveal that retail competitive advantage can be achieved through the implementation of customer-oriented CRM. CRM is also able to support innovation capabilities, which will further increase competitive advantage. It is important for retail companies to strengthen the implementation of customer relationship management in order to achieve business performance because CRM is proven to increase the ability of innovation and competitive advantage of retail companies. Research on a broader type of company is needed to provide a better level of generalization.

Purpose This study aims to understand the culture of excellence by examining the role of entrepreneurial culture in shaping how firms achieve sustainable competitive advantage (CA). This study takes into consideration the firms’ capability to transform the entrepreneurial culture into a sustainable CA by generating product development and adapting the information technological turbulence. Design/methodology/approach This study first gathers evidence from literature then carries out a detailed study to propose a structural equation model followed by an online survey that supports empirical evidence. This empirical test involves a data set with 782 usable responses following the 4,000 emails sent to the respondents and removed data due to the missing values. The population data are taken from the firm directory in Surabaya City that the Indonesian Ministry of Trade and Industry published. Findings There is a strong tendency that entrepreneurial culture is imperative for firms to attain sustainable CA by supporting new product development. The results show that product development provides a partial mediating effect, which indicates that entrepreneurial culture may affect the sustainable CA directly and with the product development support. This study also touches on dynamic capability by proposing a scenario approach that suggests that firms should refine the entrepreneurial culture to adapt to the information technological turbulence. Originality/value This study extends the understanding of the culture of excellence by underpinning the dynamic capability theory, which argues that entrepreneurial culture is a valuable resource, which helps firms achieve sustainable CA by promoting product development.

This study aims to meet the theoretical needs in answering the problem of the role of the marketing function on the dynamic capability that involves the role of multi actors through engagement. In particular, the study discusses the capabilities of SMEs’ business strategy in the offline to online market. The population of this research are owners, managers, and owners and managers of SMEs in Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that the integration of the supply chain into engagement can address the problem of the role of the marketing function that connects marketing and operations. Supply chain engagement is also able to moderate employee engagement to dynamic marketing engagement but not significantly moderate customer engagement. Meanwhile, the basis of integration as a dynamic capability in market knowledge has a significant effect on the multi-actor engagement consisting of customer engagement, employee engagement, and supply chain engagement. Summary statement of contribution: Our research builds on the three elements of multi-actor engagement that are significant against dynamic marketing engagement. The main finding of this research is that the concept of novelty can answer the proposition with the result that dynamic marketing engagement can improve business performance.

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss Business Performance Management (BPM) by taking into account its communicative and linguistic aspects. To narrow the scope of the research, the author concentrates on the systemic approaches to highlight the role of communication and language in BPM. To discuss this issue in greater detail, two concepts have been created, namely, the corporate linguistic allostasis and the calibrated corporate linguistic identity, which are used to show the role of corporate identity and communication in business performance management and their implications for creating and sustaining competitive advantage.

The integration of organizational knowledge across functional communities is increasingly seen as important. The frameworks to do so are often referred to as a ‘higher order set of principles’ or as ‘overarching architectures.’ While recognizing these frameworks as a source of competitive advantage, this chapter underlines the importance of linking organizational knowledge to practice. At the operational level, actual practices are rarely aligned with canonical practices contained in manuals, training programmes, and computer systems. In this theoretical chapter we show that the divergence between actual and canonical practices is exacerbated by a number of communities of practice addressing conflicting stakeholder interests. It is the link between knowledge and actual practice that is of central interest to this chapter. Exploring this relationship necessitates a reexamination of the role of communities of practice and frameworks for bringing together conflicting stakeholder interests. Drawing upon literatures from knowledge management, communities of practice, stakeholder, and resource-based theory this chapter suggests an integrative Purposive Community metaframework. The proposed conceptual framework contributes to the resource-based view of the firm by linking organizational knowledge to actual practices and enhancing organizational capabilities by integrating diverse stakeholder interests and expectations through a shared common goal. Such a metaframework can enhance an organisation’s dynamic capability to respond to and create change in its external environment.

This commentary targets the core ideas of the composition-based view (CBV). First, we argue that the deployment of compositional capabilities (CCs) to combine ordinary resources fits the resource-based view (RBV) and that there is therefore no need for a CBV. Second, we argue that the CCs should be presented as a specific type of dynamic capability (DC). We show that even where ordinary resources are being combined, superior combinatory capabilities are needed as competitive advantage cannot otherwise be achieved. Third, we argue that Luo and Child (2015) focused too much on the emerging economy enterprises (EEEs) as the conceptual setting. We conclude with a future research agenda to prepare the ground for research on compositional capabilities within the composition-based view of the firm.

This paper looks at the vital role of industrial research and development (R&D). The increased outsourcing of industrial R&D is contrasted with a resource-based view of competitive advantage which maintains capabilities that are valuable, rare, imitable, and non-substitutable (VRIN), and should be internalized in the firm. Traditional business formation literature is also supportive of keeping R&D “inhouse”. R&D outsourcing research is leveraged to posit possible reasons for the increased amount of outsourced R&D. Testable propositions are included that look at factors for R&D outsource decisions and also the impact of these decisions on firm performance. An R&D entropy statistic is introduced as well as several R&D characteristics useful in the decision-making process to create R&D.
