<p>An extensive work was done by COST TU1406 working groups (WG) 1,2 and 3 for preparing a guidance document for Quality Control Plan (QCP) of road bridges. WG 1, 2 and 3 reports named 'Performance Indicators for Roadway Bridges', 'Performance Goals for Roadway Bridges' and 'Establishment of a quality control plan' are already published. Based on these documents and the work done to-date, a new procedure for implementing the developed guidelines for the preparation of QCP for roadway bridges was developed by WG4 members in order to unify the method used and to validate the outcomes of the developed QCP. At the first stage, a set of common highway bridge prototypes were identified including girder, frame, arch and truss bridges. A database was created where each participating country has identified local bridges for developing of the case studies. Nine out of sixty bridges where selected for the first stage of preparing an example of QCP and the case study reports were compared with an objective to validate the outcomes. A guideline document was prepared with unified instruction on how to develop the national case study per country. The typical case study includes few stages which are defined based on the work done by WG1, 2 and</p><p>3. The stages includes data collection, element identification and grouping, defining vulnerable zones, damage processes and failure modes, selecting and evaluating performance indicators (PIs) and calculating key performance indicators (KPIs), establishing demands, creating QCP scenarios and comparing them by spider diagrams. First outcomes of the prototypes case study reports are now being updated to reflect the final version of WG3 report and together with the guidelines document will be distributed among participating countries to enable the benchmarking process for the full set of bridges representing Europe common highway bridge topologies.</p>

<p>The main objective of the COST Action TU1406 is to develop a guideline for the establishment of Quality Control plans for roadway bridges. The guideline is based on conclusions of Working groups 1 and 2 of the Action and is further developed with the contributions and findings of members of Working group 3. The paper presents the overview of the developed framework, where gradual damage processes as well as sudden events are being addressed in evaluation of Key Performance Indicators. The proposed framework relies on data from design and construction phase, as well as from results from visual inspections that are used for an assessment of safety and serviceability - the primary concerns of bridge managers. Special attention is aimed at possible Failure modes and related bridge Vulnerable zones. These are, for instance high moment regions, high shear regions and constructions joints, but can also be zones of bridge conceptual weaknesses. Since there are differences in design and materials for various bridge types, the suitability of the framework is tested separately for girder/frame bridges and arch bridges. Due to the specifics of sudden events, the application of the framework is given separately from gradual damage processes. Emphasis is given on flooding and scour as these are the most common culprits of bridge failures. The steps in the implementation of the framework are briefly shown and an illustrative example is presented.</p>

<p>Nahr Al-Fidar Bridge is in Fidar village, which is located near Byblos City, Lebanon. The bridge reconstruction was carried out swiftly during 2006-2007, due to its importance as a vital commercial artery. Indeed, no traffic disruption is allowed on the bridge, since it leads to great economic losses. At the time being, even though the bridge has only accomplished about 10 years of its service life, it is being overloaded.</p><p>The paper aims to assess the performance of Nahr Al-Fidar bridge. To that purpose, first, the case bridge is introduced, and a visual inspection took place to identify current the state of the bridge. Second, the performance indicators are evaluated for this bridge, by means of the visual assessment, and the key performance indicators are assessed. The aim is to check if the bridge meets the pre-specified performance goals. Finally, a quality control plan is implemented for Nahr Al-Fidar bridge.</p>

This paper presents the results of the seismic evaluation of an elevated seven-span bridge with tall piers in western Pennsylvania. The bridge was modeled using the SEISAB software, and the analysis used modal superposition method. Various modeling strategies related to piers, abutments, expansion joints, fixed joints, rocker bearings, and hanger supports were studied. Several modeling options were made to capture different behavior responses under seismic loading conditions. The force and displacement demands are compared, and an assessment is made with respect to the potential for damage based on the analysis results. The result of the study shows that for the level of earthquakes expected in the region, columns will not be overstressed. Furthermore, the analysis results show that displacements of the superstructure should not be of concern in light of the fact that there is sufficient bearing seat width and that concrete pedestals have been added in front of the bearing supports to presumably prevent the walking off of the bearing from the support. The study concludes that considering the low level of earthquakes expected in PA, the potential for collapse of the superstructure due to bearing support failure is negligible. The paper contributes to better understanding of the behavior of tall and elevated highway bridges in low seismic regions. The results of the study reinforce the view that decisions on seismic retrofit of such bridges in low seismic regions should not be based on column tie spacing.

In this chapter we present a model for using case studies for the core of an undergraduate theoretical statistics course. These case studies have more depth than most examples found in typical mathematical statistics texts. Each case study provides a real-world question to be addressed as well as background information on the question, data to address the problem, and suggestions for investigating the problem. An important goal is to encourage and develop statistical thinking. This chapter provides both a sample case study on quality control and analysis of variance and a directed project on experimental design that includes a discussion of how we have changed the class to fit these activities into the course. In essence, the case studies become the centerpiece of the course, and as a result, the curriculum, lectures, and assignments are significantly different from a traditional mathematical statistics course.

Zusammenfassung. Hintergrund: Die patientenbezogene Komplexität der Pflege ist durch die Merkmale „Instabilität“, „Unsicherheit“ und „Variabilität“ definiert. Aufgrund der reduzierten Aufenthaltsdauer und der steigenden Zahl chronisch und mehrfach erkrankter Personen erhöht sich die Komplexität der Pflege. Ziel: In dieser Studie untersuchten wir das Phänomen patientenbezogener Komplexität aus Sicht von Pflegefachpersonen und Pflegeexpertinnen im Akutspital. Methode: Im Rahmen eines kollektiven Case-Study-Designs schätzten Pflegefachpersonen und Pflegeexpertinnen die Komplexität von Pflegesituationen mit einem Fragebogen ein. Danach befragten wir sie in Einzelinterviews zu ihrer Einschätzung. Mittels Within-Case-Analyse verdichteten wir die Daten induktiv zu Fallgeschichten. In der Cross-Case-Analyse verglichen wir die Fallgeschichten hinsichtlich deduktiv abgeleiteter Merkmale. Ergebnisse: Die Ausprägung der Komplexität hing in den vier Cases im Wesentlichen davon ab, ob klinische Probleme kontrollierbar und prognostizierbar waren. Je nach individuellen Ressourcen der Patientinnen und Patienten stieg bzw. sank die Komplexität. Schlussfolgerungen: Komplexe Patientensituationen fordern von Pflegefachpersonen Fachwissen, Erfahrung, kommunikative Kompetenzen sowie die Fähigkeit zur Reflexion. Berufsanfänger und Berufsanfängerinnen werden zur Entwicklung dieser Fähigkeiten idealerweise durch erfahrene Berufskolleginnen oder -kollegen unterstützt und beraten.

This paper presents the evaluation of usersХ experiences in three intelligent lighting pilots in Finland. Two of the case studies are related to the use of intelligent lighting in different kinds of traffic areas, having emphasis on aspects of visibility, traffic and movement safety, and sense of security. The last case study presents a more complex view to the experience of intelligent lighting in smart city contexts. The evaluation methods, tailored to each pilot context, include questionnaires, an urban dashboard, in-situ interviews and observations, evaluation probes, and system data analyses. The applicability of the selected and tested methods is discussed reflecting the process and achieved results.
