Aim/Purpose: This paper introduces DigLit Score, an indicator of the extent to which educational institutions identify, assess, and amplify student digital literacy. Background: Digital literacy has garnered considerable attention of late among scholars, leaders, and journalists. Nonetheless, institutions of higher education have been slow to define, assess, and amplify digital literacy on par with how reading, writing, and arithmetic are addressed. Methodology: The dimensionality of DigLit Score – define, assess, amplify, assess – is demonstrated via two case studies. Contribution: A measure of digital literacy offers university leaders and policy makers a means to monitor its diffusion. Findings: Only one of the institutions was found to have a holistic approach to advancing digital literacy. Recommendations for Practitioners: Practitioners should use DigLit Score to benchmark advancement of digital literacy in higher education. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers should refine DigLit Score and expand its application within and beyond higher education. Impact on Society: DigLit Score represents an important first step in the direction of providing an important benchmark for higher education. Future Research: Future research will refine DigLit Score and broaden its application within and beyond higher education.

The present study examined the 2017 Times Higher Education annual rankings for Japanese institutions of higher learning. Based on the analytic model as mapped out previously using Canadian data, we offered a similar protocol for the top 100 institutions of higher education in Japan. Three analyses showed that: (a) overall rank correlated with individual index ranks for 9 of the 13 indices, (b) the schools appearing among the top institutions overall ranked significantly better on 8 of the 13 indices compared to schools appearing among the bottom institutions overall, and (c) schools were empirically grouped into four meaningful families or clusters whose constituent members shared a comparable profile of indices. We offer a juxtaposition of the present results to annual evaluations from Canada’s institutions of higher learning. The wider implications include an international comparison of institutions of higher learning, a proposed analysis protocol that Japanese education administrations may further pursue, and a categorical breakdown of educational institutions in Japan. Directions for future research are outlined.

The emergence of blended learning has played a role as either driver or drifter to higher education (HE) in the modern world. This chapter explores the blended learning practices by investigating two higher educational institutions in the UK and Malaysia. First, the strategies and practices related to blended learning are clearly analysed and compared. A large amount of qualitative data extracted from academics’ experience is discussed. Primarily, the findings firmly show that blended learning enables educators to revisit and to rethink their professional ethos and values, and redesign their learning and teaching where necessary. Such revisiting and rethinking facilitate the awareness and praxis of blended learning (or vice-versa: blended learning facilitates the revisit and redesign). The in-depth discussions based on academics’ voices, and reflective matrix summary from the case studies described in this chapter will act as evidence of the blueprint for blended learning policy makers and practitioners.

Climate change is a pressing concern. Higher education can address the challenge, but systematic analyses of climate change in education policy are sparse. This paper addresses this gap in the literature by reporting on how Canadian postsecondary educational institutions have engaged with climate change through policy actions. We used descriptive quantitative methods to analyze climate change-specific policies from a representative sample of 50 institutions across Canada and found that nearly half had some form of climate policy. Existing policies were then qualitatively analyzed. We found that the most common form of response focused on the built campus environment, with underdeveloped secondary responses focused on research, curriculum, community engagement, and governance policies. We consider the motivations for such institutional action and end with implications for policy makers and future research.

Problem setting. Leasing out property that is involved in educational, academic, training and production, scientific activities by the public institutions of higher education often leads to violation of the rights of other participants in educational activities. They are sure to be a result of violating the limits, established by the current legislation, of exercising the rights to leasing out property by the public institutions of higher educational. Analysis of recent researches and publications. The issues of state property lease have been studied by many scholars. Basic research in this area has been conducted by I. Spasibo-Fatieieva, O. Lipetsker, Ye.Kazarenko, V. Steshenko, M. Pronina, S. Puhinsky, T. Potapenkova, Yu.Basin, D. levenson, N. Khashchivska, N. Milovska and other scientists. Target of research. The aim of the paper is a comprehensive study and analysis of the limits of exercising the rights by the public institutions of higher education to leasing out their own property. To achieve this goal the following tasks should be solved: 1) to define the limits of exercising the rights by the public institutions of higher education to leasing out their own property; 2) to determine the legal consequences of concluding lease agreements by the public higher educational institutions in violation of current legislation. Article’s main body. The article conducts a general study and analysis of the right of the public institutions of higher education to lease property. The author emphasizes that public higher educational institutions have the right to lease out only real estate and other individually identified property. The legal consequences of concluding lease agreements by public higher educational institutions in violation of the current legislation have been studied. Conclusions and prospects for the development. Summarizing the results of the study we can formulate the following conclusions. The public institutions of higher education have the right to lease out real estate and other individually determined property in the manner prescribed by law and subject to statutory restrictions (without the right of redemption and sublease, when it does not worsen the social and living conditions of persons studying or working in the educational institution). While leasing the property, the public higher educational institution realizes primarily their own property interests, at the same time, indirectly realizing the property interests of the state. If the lease agreement of real estate and other individually determined property of higher educational institutions is recognized as invalid, it may be recognized as invalid only for the future.

Introduction. Higher education has been constantly upgrading, competition in the educational services market is intensifying in recent years. This leads to an increase in the role of marketing in the activities of higher education institutions. It is necessary to constantly look for new ways to improve the efficiency of the management of higher education institutions. Such an opportunity exists only with the constant use of marketing and the improvement of its tools. In connection with the mentioned, important and actual tasks of the present time is research and improvement of the methodology of developing an advertising campaign of higher education institutions in order to enable educational institutions to overcome existing problems in their marketing activities and develop this trend in the future. Methods. Commonly used methods of research are used in the course of the research: dialectic, monographic method, abstract and logical, method of scientific generalization, and specific methods of statistical processing of information. Results. The article deals with the general situation on the domestic market of educational services. The specifics of advertising activity of educational institutions are revealed, in particular, the necessity to study this issue, due to its urgency and lack of elaboration, is substantiated. Advertising activity is considered as a necessary condition and factor of sustainability, the competitiveness of the educational institution and its success in the education market. It is indicated on the preconditions of reorientation of priorities of educational activity into the sphere of improvement of marketing activity and advertising process of an educational institution, as well as tasks, which should carry out advertising activity in the field of educational services. Discussion. Further research is planned to be carried out in order to assess the effectiveness of the use of modern marketing tools by higher education institutions. Graduate development programmes such as FUSION continue to be seen by policy makers, higher education institutions and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as primary means of strengthening higher education–business links and in turn improving the match between graduate output and the needs of industry. This paper provides evidence from case studies. The findings indicate that the practical application of academic principles in real-world settings provides a useful learning vehicle for academics, graduates and SMEs. Key success factors and strategies for overcoming obstacles emerged from the case studies. In light of these findings, the authors make tentative recommendations to aid the future delivery of similar programmes.

This article analyses data on five years of India rankings to assess its impact on performance parameters of institutions of higher education on four (out of five) broad categories of parameters, namely i) Teaching, Learningand Resources; ii) Graduation Outcome; iii) Outreach and Inclusivity; and iv) Perception. The analysis on data onfour years of India Rankings, i.e. 2017 to 2020 on various performance parameters of HEIs in engineering discipline provides an interesting insight and reveals that participating institutions are making strenuous effort to improve their performance on various parameters or sub-parameters identified under NIRF. The analyses reflect that performance of  remaining  eligible  institutions  has  improved  on  most  of  the  ranking  parameters  in  comparison  to  the100  top-ranked  institutions  over  a  period  of  four  years  of  ranking,  i.e.  from  2017-2020.

This chapter aims to raise awareness in leaders and practitioners on how critical thinking is embedded within the performance of virtual teams. The increasingly important nexus between critical thinking and team performance is demonstrated within the specific context of the virtual environment. The chapter is interspersed with brief case studies that demonstrate some of the experiences of Australian-based higher education staff in their efforts to incorporate both critical thinking and virtual teamwork into their pedagogy. A framework of success factors and challenges inherent to virtual teams and critical thinking is provided, which covers five influential factors: technology, student characteristics, educator characteristics, social aspects, and team dynamics. The chapter concludes with some directions for future research.

Since the first generation of distance learning the format of distance education has changed a lot. Actually, with the increasing use of web technology to interact online the learning environments have been radically changed. The emergence of MOOC and its adoption by well-known universities has also influenced the change. Of course, the adoption of technology in education is not happening in the same way and at the same time and pace in all educational institutions. In fact, the success of adoption of technology depends on several factors related to the organization where it is implemented and with the individuals involved. In this chapter, the authors present the creation of a global and innovative higher education environment case study, the evolution of the solutions offered concerning distance learning, the actual offers, and the concerns for the future. They identify the factors that enabled or constrained this evolution as well as raise some questions that are still unanswered and point out some clues for future research in the field of creating a global learning environment.
