This paper describes a project that has created a Topic Map search tool for a mathematics educational database containing articles from the journal For the Learning of Mathematics. The resulting website enables users to retrieve research articles based on a variety of topics such as mathematics classification, research methods, educational objectives, in addition to traditional bibliographic information. For the Learning of Mathematics.

The paper discusses the implementation of the ‘CUB E-journal One Search' tool as an alternative solution to commercial discovery services, which was designed using Google Custom Search by the Central Library, Central University of Bihar and its impact on the library users. A descriptive survey method was used for the study. The present study found that library users found CUB E-journal One Search as a useful tool to get their desired information out of 9000 subscribed e-resources in the university. Most of the users used CUB E-journal One Search frequently in order to find relevant articles, write their assignments and research articles. The study indicated that the library users were influenced by Google like single search boxes and wished to have same features. Further, users expected features like document recommendation, search filters, RSS and on-screen help from the discovery tool. The paper is a first attempt to study the impact of open source discovery tools on the library users. It will further give confidence to the librarians in developing countries to deploy open source search solutions using Google Custom Search in the libraries.

In the previous articles, we reported on the results of a multifaceted research study on how to benchmark and use emerging educational technologies. Our approach blended classic research methods with those used in market research studies. We gathered data and expertise from a variety of sources, including academic research articles, industry reports, interviews with leaders and national pacesetters, and the experiences of our own veteran staff. Our objective was to create a means by which decisions about affordances, constraints, and effective use could be made in a just-in-time fashion. We have only scratched the surface.

The library and information science (LIS) profession is influenced by multidisciplinary research strategies and techniques (research methods) that in themselves are also evolving. They represent established ways of approaching research questions (e.g., qualitative vs. quantitative methods). This chapter reviews the methods of research as expressed in literature, demonstrating how, where, and if they are inter-connected. Chu concludes that popularly used approaches include the theoretical approach, experiment, content analysis, bibliometrics, questionnaire, and interview. It appears that most empirical research articles in Chu's analysis employed a quantitative approach. Although the survey emerged as the most frequently used research strategy, there is evidence that the number and variety of research methods and methodologies have been increasing. There is also evidence that qualitative approaches are gaining increasing importance and have a role to play in LIS, while mixed methods have not yet gained enough recognition in LIS research.

The Centre de Création Industrielle of the Centre Georges Pompidou has created and made accessible a bibliographic research tool covering the fields of design, architecture and other elements of the everyday environment in the form of a database, CéCILE, which may be accessed through Telesystemes-Questel.The article describes the background and setting-up of the database, along with details of its scope, and the structure of its entries and information retrieval elements. This paper was originally delivered to the Section of Art Libraries at the 1983 IFLA Council. The English summary is abstracted from the translation by Ian Sheridan.

Because JRME is a research journal, its value to those who conduct research in mathematics education is obvious. What may not be as obvious, however, is that JRME articles also have the potential to benefit another audience, namely, mathematics education practitioners. Research articles in JRME (and those in other mathematics education research journals, as well) can offer to practitioners helpful information and a variety of tools that have the potential to be useful in their work. The variety of “practitioners” who can benefit from research articles in JRME includes those who teach mathematics at the prekindergarten through collegiate levels, teacher educators who work with prospective mathematics teachers at any of those levels, mathematics coaches or supervisors who serve as school- or district-based leaders for groups of mathematics teachers, teacher educators who engage in-service mathematics teachers in professional development, and even researchers who teach others about mathematics education research.
