Digitized collections offer a wealth of resources for improving a wide variety of literacies that promote critical thinking skills, instruction and curriculum enhancements. Digitized collections and processes are increasing rapidly in their development and availability and as such introduce issues such as public access, copyright laws, limitations on use, and the integration of both free and commercially available digitalized materials. Governments around the world offer an abundance of digitalized information, often with curriculum guidance. Together with these issues, questions concerning how to evaluate and integrate curriculum and literacy ideas into instruction using digitalization are considered. This paper provides examples of subject areas attuned to digitations including literature, history, current events, sociology, health and science, and local collections. Suitable policies and procedures are discussed promoting efficient programming including collection development, project management, technical needs, online dissemination, and reference and consultation services.

A major goal of K-12 education is to create a student-centered classroom where educators are teaching to increase critical thinking skills, promote problem-based learning, and differentiate instruction. However, the reality is that many educators are challenged by the difficult task of creating such a learning environment in their classrooms. In this chapter, the authors will introduce a Flipped Classroom Professional Development project, a Title II Part A Higher Education Improving Teacher Quality State Grant initiative. This project centered on two goals. First, the authors sought to teach the flipped classroom model through an integrated literacy and math approach while “mathematizing” read-aloud instruction for primary and elementary grade educators. Secondly, the chapter describes efforts to expand teachers' repertoire of effective instructional, blended technology tools for teaching math and literacy. The authors will conclude with the potential of the Flipped Classroom model in K-5 settings based upon this professional development framework.

News media literacy is challenging but essential for English learners participating fully in the global community. Gaining news-comprehension skills is complicated by information overload; students need critical strategies to sort through sources and get a reliable grasp on current events. Critical thinking skills are crucial too, for engaging with news: from access, to discussion and participation. Building these skills is actually quite manageable, and a consistent focus on critical strategies can provide a solid base for learner-empowering news media courses. This condensed article introduces some resources and methods for helping learners develop skills and enjoy more critical, confident understanding and autonomy in engaging with and responding to news in L2 English. ニュースメディアリタラシーは、グローバル社会の一員である英語学習者には難しいが欠かせない能力である。しかし、英語のニュースを理解するスキルは情報過多により複雑になっている。つまり、情報源を整理し最新の出来事を信頼して把握するのには、学生は効率的な戦略が必要である。批判的思考(クリティカル・シンキング)も、多すぎる情報の中からニュースを理解するために役に立つ。クリティカル・シンキングとは、読んだり、聞いたりしたことをそのまま受け取ったり、否定したりせずに、自分で他の情報を得て、自分自身で決めることである。クリティカル・シンキングは、ニュースに触れる時や、ニュースについてディスカッションをする時、ニュースに関して積極的に問題に取り組む時にも大切である。このスキルを築くことはそれほど難しいことではなく、常にクリティカル・シンキングの方法に焦点を置くことで、ニュースメディア学習のための講座に確かな基礎を作ることができる。本論では、学習者がインターネット上の英語のニュースの理解と使い方を、自信を持って高めることができる情報源(ニュースメディアの参考ウェブサイトなど)を紹介する。

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to set forth a less-costly, more flexible approach to teaching the analysis of international business development opportunities. Design/methodology/approach The approach capitalizes upon the high-quality business condition metrics, which are necessary to inform the development decision, that have recently become freely-available through a set of institutions that gather and distribute these metrics. Findings Critical thinking skills in this area are developed here not just by understanding the tools of analysis but also by having participated in a series of active classroom activities focused upon private investment decisions in a set of disparate countries. Practical implications This approach develops rising business professionals with refined critical thinking skills who will be able to immediately contribute to international business development decision-making. Social implications Opportunities for students to learn these critical thinking skills can be far more available because the traditional method by which these skills have been taught has been by finding a partner business with the resources to pay for such data. In exchange for allowing students to use the data experientially the partner firm benefits from the work product of the students who study the international business development project at the firm’s offices. Originality/value The approach set forth provides an accessible alternate for those on-campus students and distance-learning students who do not need to have the flexibility to travel to the site of a business partner – where most of this learning has heretofore been arranged.

ABSTRACTThis research is aimed to know the differences increase critical thinking skills through learning group and individual problem solving in thermochemical material. This research uses a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group design and study sample consisted of 103 students, divided into the first experimental (group problem solving) (35 students), the two group experimental (individual problem solving) (34 students). The collected through pretest-posttest. The analyzed with the Kruskal Wallis test, the results showed that the learning problem solving as a group or individually can improve students’ critical thinking skills. Statistical test there are significant differences in the students critical thinking skills thermochemical material between students who received group and individual problem solving. Critical thinking skills improvement with problem solving individual learning higher compared with group learning problem solving.Keywords: problem solving learning, critical thinking skillsABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan peningkatan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa melalui pembelajaran group dan individual problem solving pada materi termokimia. Data uji statistik, terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa pada materi termokimia antara siswa yang mendapat pembelajaran group problem solving dan individual problem solving. This research is motivated by the competence of teachers in preparing poor learning outcomes tests and has not been able to measure high-level thinking skills, especially critical thinking skills. Therefore the researcher seeks to improve teacher competence in compiling tests on student learning outcomes based on critical thinking skills through academic supervision. This study uses a school action research design that has stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. This research was conducted for 2 months starting April 9 to May 17, 2019 for Physics teachers in the 7 target schools. Data is sourced from interviews with teachers and test documents prepared by the teacher. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis through the stages of data collection, data simplification, data presentation, conclusion drawing. Data were analyzed using assessment rubrics adjusted to indicators of critical thinking skills. The results of this study conclude that teacher competence in preparing tests of learning outcomes based on critical thinking skills has increased from the first cycle with a percentage of 61% with sufficient categories to 76% with good categories in cycle II.
