This article discusses the obstacles and potential solutions for the incorporation and increased awareness of English as a lingua franca (ELF) into teacher education programs for secondary school Japanese teachers of English (JTEs). While a nationally standardized “Core Curriculum” (CC) for secondary school JTEs’ learning guidelines and models in teacher education reflects relatively positive attitudes towards ELF, the integration of an ELF perspective into teacher education programs is considered a low priority. Recent literature explores the barriers to ELF-aware curriculum design and suggests that teachers carry out ELF-based action research, both to promote teachers’ critical awareness of ELF and to gain insights that will encourage a wider transformative approach to their beliefs. The authors here conclude that for a more effective and innovative ELF-aware curriculum implementation, it is important to consider the broader context of the current landscape of English use and language teaching.

Through a combination of questionnaires, focus groups, and class interviews, this study investigated the attitudes of Japanese secondary school students towards the representations of English users and English-language communications appearing in English language textbooks. The results showed a congruence of student preferences for inner-circle (IC) (Kachru, 1985) orientations with the IC-oriented features most commonly found in English textbooks approved and used in Japanese secondary schools. They also revealed how student familiarity with textbooks influences preferences for the ways English users and English-language communications are represented in them.

This study examined the effects of self-assessment vs. peer assessment on Japanese high school students’ writing anxiety and the validity of Cheng’s (2004) Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI). After assignment to either the self-assessment or peer-assessment condition, two groups of Japanese high school students (N=293) participated in a series of five writing and student-assessment sessions over a period of 10 days. An exploratory factor analysis was then conducted on SLWAI data collected before and after these sessions to compare the effects of the writing practice and student assessment type on the factor structure of the two groups’ writing anxiety. The results showed post-treatment factor structure differences that had not been present initially. Nevertheless, the main factor both before and after the treatment sessions was English writing avoidance due to cognitive anxiety. These findings suggest the importance of dealing with learner anxiety to improve English writing instruction.

Short story analysis is a technique in which extracts from qualitative data such as interviews and diary entries are examined for their narrative elements (people, place, time) and then connected to increasingly larger scales of context. I argue that this technique can positively inform research and teaching involving preservice language teachers because it encourages participants to systematically reflect on experience and what makes it meaningful. I exemplify the analysis by applying it to extracts from interviews with two preservice teachers about a teaching practicum, which demonstrates how contextual issues related to language learning and teaching can impact the everyday lives of prospective teachers. I conclude by discussing some of the implications of this approach for research and teaching involving preservice language teachers.

Shadowing has become popular in the Japanese EFL teaching context over the past two decades. Accumulated research data indicates that shadowing is effective for listening skill development and teaching pronunciation. This article first summarizes how to use shadowing to teach listening through an example of a lesson procedure based on previous research. Subsequently, it proposes a procedure for teaching pronunciation. Finally, it proposes research areas that can be explored for the development of shadowing as a teaching technique. シャドーイングは最近の二十年間、日本の英語教育において、広く認識されるようになった。これまでの研究によると、シャドーイングはリスニング力の向上および発音指導への可能性も提唱されている。本稿では、初めに過去の研究に基づいたリスニング指導法としてのシャドーイング活用法を、1つの授業を例として概観する。その後、発音指導の手順も提唱する。最後に、指導法として、シャドーイングの今後の発展に寄与するであろう研究分野についても議論を深める。

This study is concerned with vocabulary acquisition from reading ‘authentic’ English storybooks to very young Japanese children in an immersion EFL setting. 26 children took part in a quasi-experimental study which examined two reading techniques. A multiple readings condition offered three verbatim readings of three different storybooks (nine readings in total), whereas the second condition added brief L2 explanations of target words within a single reading of each book (three readings in total). Prior vocabulary in L2 (English) was also measured to evaluate its effect on word learning. A post-treatment target word vocabulary test was conducted to assess for acquisition. The results of the study show that neither reading condition resulted in significant effects with regard to word learning. The effect of prior vocabulary (both L1 and L2), however, was significant, and implications for educators working with children in this age group are discussed.

While I have found several good textbooks to use in my university classes over the years, the defining quality of my classes always seems to have been the creation and use of texts that students themselves have produced from their own experiences. In this piece, I will describe seven types of activity structure teachers can use to stimulate the production of student texts and then loop them back into the classroom for further student use. I will also describe four principal results of adopting such materials through this methodology—student-centered teaching, level and content sensitive materials, socialization, and emic pedagogy—and explain their impact on students in terms of SLA, identity construction, and community formation.

Quality assurance (QA) is a necessary component of language education that is too often overlooked or absent in Japanese higher education institutions. This paper discusses the notion of QA in language education generally, briefly outlines the landscape of QA in postsecondary English language programs in Japan, and discusses some organizational factors that may help or hinder QA in such contexts. The paper concludes with recommendations for how postsecondary English language programs in Japan can offer more robust QA measures in order to provide a uniform standard of course and lesson delivery to all students.
