In this article, the author describes the formation, development and current status of a skills system in use in a Glasgow Secondary School. The school's circumstances are outlined, and then the article explains how issues and observations with the school library led to a number of hypotheses and a rationale. The progress of the skills system as it evolved and became part of a Whole School concept is explored, and the characteristics of the system, which the school believes is unique, are discussed. The ways in which this Future Skills System relates to the new curriculum in Scotland are indicated, together with the means by which the system brings together careers, employers, expectations and skills. The article concludes by highlighting the current stage in the process.

Læreplanene for grunnopplæringen i Norge er for tiden under revisjon og fornyelse. Fagfornyelsen innebærer blant annet at bærekraftig utvikling blir et tverrfaglig og gjennomgående tema i skolen. Satsingen på Utdanning for Bærekraftig Utvikling (UBU) i skolen er per i dag hovedsakelig preget av enkeltstående prosjekter drevet fram av enkeltlærere. Vi har i denne studien intervjuet skoleledelse, lærere, elevråd, driftsleder og skoleeier ved fire videregående skoler for å få fram praksisfeltets stemmer knyttet til hva som hemmer og hva som fremmer arbeidet med UBU i norsk videregående skole. Funn fra studien viser at alle informantene er positive til en satsing på bærekraftig utvikling. Vi finner videre at det utkrystalliserer seg ni sentrale faktorer som påvirker i retning av å hemme eller fremme en helhetlig satsing på UBU. Informantene peker på hverandre når det gjelder å ta initiativ til å utvikle UBU lokalt; dette kan medføre en pulverisering av ansvar så lenge alle «sitter på gjerdet» og venter på at andre skal ta initiativ. En forpliktende satsing på UBU stiller krav til alle aktører og nivåer i skolen. Vi stiller spørsmål om satsingen på bærekraftig utvikling i fagfornyelsen er tilstrekkelig for å utvikle den tverrfaglige forståelsen og handlingskompetansen som er nødvendig for å forberede elevene på å leve bærekraftige liv i framtiden. As part of the revision, sustainable development becomes an interdisciplinary and comprehensive subject in school. There are presently few or no examples of schools that work comprehensively with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Norway. In this study, we have interviewed school management, teachers, student council, operation manager and school owner at four upper secondary schools in order to map what supports and what constrains a holistic effort to ESD in Norwegian upper secondary school. Findings from the study show that all the interviewees are positive to a commitment to sustainable development as part of the new curriculum. Further, we identify nine key factors influencing action as well as resulting from it, in the direction of support or constraint of a holistic effort to ESD. The interviewees point to each other when it comes to taking the initiative to develop ESD locally; this can result in a pulverization of responsibility as long as everyone "sits on the fence" waiting for others to take the initiative. A binding commitment to ESD places demands on all actors and levels at the school. We ask whether the inclusion of sustainable development in the new curriculum is sufficient for developing an interdisciplinary understanding and the action competence that is necessary to prepare the students for living sustainable lives in the future. A commitment to ESD also requires the school and the teachers to have the time and space to develop the organization and learning methods locally.Keywords: Education for Sustainable Development, curriculum reform, upper secondary school, whole-school approach, focus-group interviews, stakeholders in school

This paper will explore the ways one school library can be positioned to effectively support and extend the general capabilities section of the new Australian Curriculum. In particular, the general capabilities of: Literacy, ICT, Critical and creative thinking, Personal and social capability, Ethical behaviour and Intercultural understanding. These general capabilities are overarching and are intended to feature in all areas of learning across the Australian curriculum. In considering how a school library can work with each of these capabilities, this paper will explore concrete programs, activities and approaches that support and extend the various capabilities. This paper will also recognise aspects of the school library’s role in community and culture that, though important, are often overlooked. This role is an important one for school libraries now and into the future as we rework our role in light of changing technologies and documents such as Australia’s new curriculum.

Traditionally career education in New Zealand secondary schools has been provided by a dedicated career advisor, but the effectiveness of this model is increasingly being questioned. This review examined approaches to career education in order to recommend a more appropriate model for the future. A review of 14 articles revealed that career education is increasingly important for secondary school students and that advantages exist in an integrated whole-school approach. The authors argue that such an approach is desirable, but acknowledge the issues to be addressed to ensure success. These include professional development for career advisors, principals and teachers, changing entrenched attitudes, reimagining the role of the career advisor and providing increased resourcing. While this review is focussed on New Zealand, it is apparent that other countries are grappling, similarly, with the issue of career education for secondary school students.

Purpose Nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is a challenging disease to manage primarily due to its varied clinical course. The management of NMIBC has witnessed a widespread change with respect to its diagnosis and treatment. Although transurethral resection (TUR) and adjuvant bacillus Calmette–Guerin (BCG) stills remain the cornerstone, newer protocols has come into vogue to achieve optimal care. On the basis of a literature review, we aimed to establish ‘what changes has already occurred and what is expected in the future’ in NMIBC. Methods A Medline search was performed to identify the published literature with respect to diagnosis, treatment and future perspectives on NMIBC. Particular emphasis was directed to determinants such as the quality of TUR and the newer modifications, Re-TUR, current status of newer macroscopic and microscopic imaging, role of urinary biomarkers, clinical, histologic and molecular predictors of high-risk disease, administration of intravesical agents, salvage therapy in BCG recurrence and the current best practice guidelines were analyzed. Results and Conclusions Optimal TUR, restaging in select group, incorporation of newer endoscopic imaging and judicious administration of intravesical chemo-immunotherapeutic agents can contribute to better patient care. Although there is a plethora of urinary markers, there is insufficient evidence for their use in isolation. The future probably lies in identification of genetic markers to determine disease recurrence, nonresponders to standard treatment and early institution of alternative/targeted therapy.

The networking approach to the World Wide Web is defined not only by the exploration of architecture, but also by the confirmed need for interrupts. Given the current status of authenticated archetypes, steganographers dubiously desire the analysis of scatter/gather I/O. the focus in this position paper is not on whether Moore's Law can be made concurrent, distributed, and pervasive, but rather on proposing an analysis of 32 bit architectures (Grange). It is concluded that, using probabilistic and interactive information and based on relational modality, the machine system and kernels are verified, which is widely used in the future.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to review and analyze the perishable inventory models along various dimensions such as its evolution, scope, demand, shelf life, replenishment policy, modeling techniques and research gaps.Design/methodology/approachIn total, 418 relevant and scholarly articles of various researchers and practitioners during 1990-2016 were reviewed. They were critically analyzed along author profile, nature of perishability, research contributions of different countries, publication along time, research methodologies adopted, etc. to draw fruitful conclusions. The future research for perishable inventory modeling was also discussed and suggested.FindingsThere are plethora of perishable inventory studies with divergent objectives and scope. Besides demand and perishable rate in perishable inventory models, other factors such as price discount, allow shortage or not, inflation, time value of money and so on were found to be combined to make it more realistic. The modeling of inventory systems with two or more perishable items is limited. The multi-echelon inventory with centralized decision and information sharing is acquiring lot of importance because of supply chain integration in the competitive market.Research limitations/implicationsOnly peer-reviewed journals and conference papers were analyzed, whereas the manuals, reports, white papers and blood-related articles were excluded. Clustering of literature revealed that future studies should focus on stochastic modeling.Practical implicationsStress had been laid to identify future research gaps that will help in developing realistic models. The present work will form a guideline to choose the appropriate methodology(s) and mathematical technique(s) in different situations with perishable inventory.Originality/valueThe current review analyzed 419 research papers available in the literature on perishable inventory modeling to summarize its current status and identify its potential future directions. Also the future research gaps were uncovered. This systemic review is strongly felt to fill the gap in the perishable inventory literature and help in formulating effective strategies to design of an effective and efficient inventory management system for perishable items.
