Information Technology has brought significant changes to the human social interaction & behaviors. Behavioral addiction to social media use is a rather novel concept in psychiatric “classification of diseases”. Some foreign studies have reported it to be as high as 29.5%.7,8 There is need to study this relatively neglected area specially among our youth. This will help provide reliable data to understand the magnitude of current problem. Objectives: To study the Components of Behavioral addiction to Social Media use: Conflict, Mood Modification, Relapse, Salience, Tolerance and Withdrawal, among the youth in Pakistan. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Department of Psychiatry Services Institute and Medical Sciences, Lahore. Period: March 2019 to May 2019. Material & Methods: Among University students was conducted Purposive sampling technique was employed. Questionnaire forms were given to students of a University. Each questionnaire had 12 questions. There were specific questions for each component of addiction: Conflict, Mood Modification, Relapse, Salience, Tolerance and Withdrawal. Each respondent’s bio-data, preferred social networking medium and frequency of social media use were recorded. They were also asked about their perception about excessive social media use. The responses were based on Likert scale. The respondents were asked to give the single best response to each question. A total of 210 responses were obtained. They were assessed using the software, IBM SPSS version 25. Results: The sample population reported positive for all the components of addiction tested. The majority (greater than 50%) of responses for each component were in “Always” to “Sometimes” range of Likert scale. Conclusion: The current generation of Pakistani youth might be suffering from Behavioral Addiction to Social Media use.

Although the role of social media in infectious disease outbreaks is receiving increasing attention, little is known about the mechanisms by which social media use affects risk perception and preventive behaviors during such outbreaks. This study aims to determine whether there are any relationships between social media use, preventive behavior, perceived threat of coronavirus, self-efficacy, and socio-demographic characteristics. The data were collected from 310 respondents across Pakistan using an online cross-sectional survey. Reliability analyses were performed for all scales and structural equational modeling was used to identify the relationships between study variables. We found that: (i) social media use predicts self-efficacy (β = 0.25, p < 0.05) and perceived threat of coronavirus (β = 0.54, p < 0.05, R2 = 0.06), and (ii) preventive behavior is predicted by self-efficacy and perceived threat of coronavirus (R = 0.10, p < 0.05). Therefore, these results indicate the importance of social media's influence on health-related behaviors. These findings are valuable for health administrators, governments, policymakers, and social scientists, specifically for individuals whose situations are similar to those in Pakistan.

Background: As years passes by, the usage of social media has become an important public health issue. It is known that problematic social media use is related with health problems. With this study, it is aimed to determine the social media use of hospital employees, the relation between social media addiction and burnout levels and to determine effective factors.                                                                                                                 Methods: Target population of the cross-sectional study consists of 2627 person between the ages of 18-60 who is working at a university hospital. Minimum sample size was calculated as 321 and reached up to 323 people. Question form, Burnout Scale and Social Media Addiction Adult Form were applied by interviewing the employees face-to-face between the months of March-April 2019. Results: 80.2% of the participants use social media every day, 63.1% of them use social media mostly at evenings. 94.8% of people mostly connect to social media with their phone. Average time spent daily on social media is 91, 33±87, 89 minutes. Daily social media use is significantly higher in women, university graduates, nurses. There is a significant difference between age groups and between married and never married in terms of average time spent daily on social media. Social media addiction scale score is significantly higher in women, never married persons and in the age group 20-29. Weak correlation was determined between scores of social media addiction scale and burnout levels, and age and time spent on social media.                                                                                                                                         Conclusions: It is determined that social media usage in hospital employees is higher than Turkey’s average and there is a positive relation between scores of social media addiction scale and burnout levels. Providing education to employees in order to reduce social media usage, hanging posters related with how over-usage of social media may lead to burnout.

AbstractPrevious research acknowledges that prolonged social media use is associated with several negative psychological consequences, including higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. In order to protect individuals from social stressors, research illustrates the role that self-compassion can play, with individuals high in self-compassion reporting greater emotional wellbeing; hence, proposing self-compassion could be a trait that is positively related to social media use. This research aimed to investigate the relationship between Instagram use and self-compassion, and whether this relationship can be explained through the relation to psychological wellbeing (depression, anxiety, and stress). A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate this relationship amongst young adults (n = 173), utilizing a revised version of The Multidimensional Facebook Intensity Scale to explore Instagram, The Self-Compassion Scale, and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale. Instagram intensity appeared to influence psychological wellbeing, with participants who spent more time on Instagram reporting poorer psychological wellbeing. Whilst higher levels of self-compassion were associated with lower levels of reported depression, anxiety, and stress, the relationship between Instagram intensity and self-compassion was not mediated to the extent as expected by wellbeing. Possible explanations and future directions are discussed as to what could explain the positive relationship between self-compassion and Instagram use.

Abstract BackgroundThe 2019 Coronavirus Disease Pandemic (COVID-19) is a worldwide global epidemic. Although acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination will be a critical step in combating the pandemic, achieving high uptake will be difficult, and potentially made more difficult by social media misinformation. This study aimed to examine the association between social media use and acceptance of receiving COVID-19 vaccine among the general population in Saudi Arabia.MethodologyA cross-sectional study was conducted from June 17 to June 19, 2021 among 504 participants of the general population in Saudi Arabia. The data were collected using a three-part online questionnaire (sociodemographic characteristics, medical and vaccination history, pattern of social media use). ResultsAmong 504 participants who completed the survey, 477 participants were acceptant of the vaccine and 27 were non-accepting. A total of 335 individuals had already received the vaccine, 142 were willing to receive the vaccine and 27 were unwilling. One hundred and thirty participants denied using social media for COVID-19 news. Four factors were found to be significant in influencing vaccine acceptance in univariate analysis: having a chronic condition, believing that infertility is a side effect of the COVID-19 vaccine, being concerned about a serious side effect from the vaccine and basing the decision to be vaccinated on social media information. Two of these factors fell away on multivariate analysis: basing the decision on social media information and a belief that vaccination causes infertility, suggesting that the associations are dependent on other factors.Conclusion‏In conclusion, there was no significant independent relationship between social media usage and people's willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccination.
