This study specifically outlines the role of pastoral counseling in the church for the restoration of the spiritual health of the church. This paper uses qualitative methods with a literature study approach. The description in this article describes that the interpersonal relationships between counselors and their consensual. Counseling comes from the Latin "Concilium" which means with or with and taking or holding. Pastoral counseling serves to heal the whole human being therefore pastoral counseling helps the "wounded", to survive and go through a state in which they recovered to their original condition. In applying pastoral counseling to the congregation a counselor must understand how he or she should deal with the consequences. This is so that the counselor does not rush to blame or confront a person sharply and directly in the early stages of counseling. A good Christian pastor or counselor should put his or her function first rather than his office, for without real realization of the duty of responsibility one cannot be said to be a good shepherd or counselor.

By virtue of their similarities in professional training, competence and activities, as well as their differentness from both clergy in general and other pastoral specialists, pastoral counselors have emerged as an identifiable professional group. Some of the implications which this kind of professionalization may have for the relation between pastoral counseling and the Church at large are examined, especially the low status of the parish as a work setting for professional pastoral counselors. A call is made for pastoral counseling to redefine its relationship to the parish in ways which reflect professional rather than political concerns.

This essay discusses the need to define the relations between psychology and the church as more than the consultation over pastoral counseling cases. A paradigm for understanding these relationships is proposed. Definitions are given for the church and for psychology. The church is seen as a place, a plan, a program and a people. Psychology is defined as the attempt to understand, explain and influence behavior. Psychology can relate to the church by collaborating or consulting on any one of the several facets of church life. The implications of the model are suggested. Thus psychology is seen to be able to assist the church in enhancing its ministry and fulfilling its ministry.

Pastoral care of women: A paradigm shiftThis article shows that church and society find themselves somewhere between the modern and postmodern eras. Postmodern thinking is becoming more and more prevalent. In the premodern era society was structured according to a strict hierarchy. In modern times people were placed in the hierarchical system on account of their instrumental value. Those considered to be of more worth dominated those of lesser value. In postmodern thinking hierarchy, dominance and value judgements of people are questioned. The article investigates the consequences of this shift for the disciplines of gender studies and pastoral counseling with women. It indicates how women are still caught up in various power systems and explores ways in which narratives of hope and transformation can assist women in finding healing and new possibilities in the church. The article consists of four sections in which the following are explored: scientific theories regarding pastoral counseling with women; the relationship between these theories and shifting paradigms; the effect of paradigms on pastoral counseling with women; an adequate model for pastoral counseling with women.
