Communal land management is a structural element of the Alpine Mountains. In the Valleys of the Germanasca (TO), collective management has been carried out for centuries by means of extensive private shared ownership. These properties materialize the interrelations between the community and territory as identified by the first article of the European Landscape Convention. This contribution puts the theme of collective management of the highlands in the perspective of the recognition, by the urban tools regarding the theme of Landscape, of the “interrelations” between anthropic and natural elements, and in this case with respect to the Piedmont Regional Landscape Plan.

Chapter five examines natural foods stores that sold vegetarian and organic products with the goal of advancing the causes of environmentalism, animal rights, and pacifism. Natural foods sellers understood their small, independent storefronts as ethical alternatives to American supermarkets and agribusinesses’ relentless pursuit of profit through exploitative labor and environmentally destructive systems of production and distribution. Like feminist businesses, natural foods stores were eager practitioners of cooperative ownership and collective management. By the late 1970s, the natural foods market had become more lucrative than anyone could have imagined a decade earlier. Yet as companies like Whole Foods Market aggressively pursued profits in the 1980s and ‘90s, they would move far from natural foods sellers’ original values of shared ownership, democratic workplaces, and collaboration with social movements.

Ridge and furrow is an archaeological pattern of ridges and troughs used in Europe, frequently associated with communal open-field farming and strip cultivation. Strip farming spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages but appears to have only slightly penetrated southern Europe. In Greece, no areas under a ridge-and-furrow system were previously known. Working on 1945 aerial photos of Prespa, Greece, a border area around two lakes whose water levels fluctuate seasonally, we noted the presence of strip fields around the lakeshore, and subsequently identified them in the field as a ridge-and-furrow system. Using GIS, we measured the dimensions of all individual fields and collected oral histories from elderly locals. The area under strip farming was over 900 ha. Strips were straight, ca 200 m long and 10m wide, with a mean area of 2,160 m2. Wheat, rye, maize and beans were cultivated on the ridges, whilst grass in the furrows was mowed for hay. The construction and dimensions were almost identical to those seen in England. No information was found on either the origin of this system in Prespa, or connections with ‘zadruga’ or ‘chiftlik’ – other regional communal land management systems. A few adjacent areas with strip cultivations still in use were located in the two neighbouring countries sharing the lakes, and still fewer areas with ridge-and-furrow traces, particularly around lakes. By using ridge-and-furrow agriculture, local people had successfully coped with the perennial and seasonal inundation of their fields, a problem that remains unresolved and afflicts modern biodiversity conservation in the area.

The Regional Landscape Observatory of the Veneto Region, formally established by the regional law n. 10 of 2011, initially involved local entities in the elaboration of experimental landscape plans. In 2012, endowed with a special organisational discipline, the Observatory set out tasks and activities to promote the protection, management and requalification of regional landscapes. In February 2013, the Regional Network of Landscape Observatories was established. In the years 2014-19, the Observatory focused its activities on training, participation and awareness-raising, in line with the aims of the European Landscape Convention, by providing training courses on landscape for technical experts and refresher workshops for professionals in collaboration with a number of universities of the Veneto region.

<p>This article presents a methodology and the results of the classification of the rural landscapes physiognomies conducted on the study area located in the municipality of Cekcyn, Poland. The study aimed to develop a landscape identification method that would combine natural, cultural, and visual criteria with which to implement the provisions of the European Landscape Convention. The realization of the European Landscape Convention in Poland is incomplete due to the lack of practical application of landscape assessment in land management and spatial planning at the commune level. The research was intended at helping to fill this void. The study develops a method using which it will be possible to protect the diversity and beauty of Europe’s rural landscapes more effectively. The goal has so far been of little scientific interest in Poland. The physiognomy of the studied area was analyzed with the use of commonly available spatial data and by means of field studies. Physical-geographical units and cultural characteristics have been designated based on spatial databases. Landscape patterns were identified by analyzing visual fields with the use of both GIS applications and field studies. This practice made it possible to determine physiognomic units of the landscape which are internally coherent and relatively homogeneous in terms of physical-geographical, cultural, and visual features. Identifying the landscape physiognomy within the designated landscape physiognomic units serves to harmonize spatial alterations in the area of rural communes in processes of land management and planning.</p>

The article focuses on the issue ofpotential conclusion of land servitudes with land plots being their objects, land plots that are owned or leased and constitute separate objects with the established borders, area, purpose and cadastral number. The article lists the documents to be studied while conducting forensic land and technical examinations to identify possible variants for conclusion of a land servitude. It also specifies that a land servitude is concluded in the way that is the least cumbersome for the owner of the land plot. The article provides the main types of servitudes and the list of documents to be taken into account while preparing technical documentation on land management with regard to charting borders of the land plot, the one with the right of sublease, servitude. It provides examples of instances when land servitude may be terminated and indicates the case when land servitude in the name of one of the co-owners of the land plot cannot be concluded under the shared ownership over the land plot in question. The article enumerates normative and legal acts that regulate the questions of land servitude.

Abstract. Chalcones are a type of flavonoids characterized by an α-β unsaturated structural element which may react with thiol groups to activate pathways such as the Nrf2-Keap-1 system. Naringenin chalcone is abundant in the diet but little is known about its bioavailability. In this work, the bioavailability of naringenin chalcone from tomatoes was investigated in a group of healthy men (n=10). After ingestion of 600 grams of tomatoes providing a single dose of 17.3 mg naringenin chalcone, 0.2 mg of naringenin, and 195 mg naringin plasma levels of free and conjugated naringenin and naringenin chalcone (glucuronide and sulfate) were analyzed by UHPLC-QTOF-MS at 0.5, 1, 3, and 6 h post-consumption. Plasma levels of conjugated naringenin increased to about 12 nmol/L with a maximum at about 3 h. Concentrations of free naringenin hardly elevated above baseline. Plasma levels of free and conjugated naringenin chalcone significantly increased. A maximum of the conjugated chalcone was reached at about 3 h after ingestion with an average concentration of about 0.5 nmol/L. No free chalcone was detectable at baseline but low amounts of the unconjugated compound could be detected with an average maximum of 0.8 nmol/L at about 1 h after ingestion. The data demonstrate that naringenin chalcone is bioavailable in humans from cherry tomatoes as a dietary source. However, availability is poor and intramolecular cyclisation as well as extended metabolism likely contribute to the inactivation of the reactive alpha-beta unsaturated reactive center as well as the excretion of the biologically active molecule, respectively.
