Educational training programs are tasked with addressing potential barriers to interprofessional practice through experiences that promote interprofessional collaborations. The present study of interprofessional experiences (IPE) had both research and pedagogical purposes. The research purpose was to describe graduate student self-perceptions related to interprofessional teaming/collaboration before and after an IPE involving two educational training programs, school psychology and speech-language pathology. The pedagogical purpose was to convey a detailed description of a case-based IPE offered as a course assignment and offer implementation suggestions. Participants in this course-based IPE were 109 students in the school psychology and speech-language pathology graduate programs at a medium-sized midwestern university over a four-year period. Students in both programs engaged in the IPE as part of a graded class assignment involving case studies. Pre- and post-IPE surveys were used to determine changes in students’ perceptions of their own profession and training, others’ professions, and collaboration and teaming. Results indicated that the perception of students from both programs significantly improved following the IPE. Improved perceptions of collaboration, teaming, and one another’s professions were sustained over four years of implementation. Implications for research, practice, and training are discussed.

Abstract The goal of university training programs is to educate speech-language pathology and audiology students to become competent and independent practitioners, with the ability to provide high quality and professional services to the public. This article describes the behaviors of “at-risk” student clinicians, so they may be identified early in their practica and remediation may be implemented. The importance of establishing a student at-risk protocol is discussed as well as a remediation plan for these students. This article summarized the Auburn University Speech and Hearing Clinic’s Student At-Risk Protocol, which may serve as a model for university training programs. The challenges of implementing such a protocol are also discussed.

The Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CCFC) sets accreditation standards and these standards list broad domains of knowledge with specific coverage of “the appropriate etiologies, characteristics, anatomical/physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural correlates” and assessment, intervention, and methods of prevention for each domain” (CCFC, 2013, “Standard IV-C”). One domain in the 2014 standards is “voice and resonance.” Studies of graduate training programs suggest that fewer programs require coursework in cleft palate, the course in which resonance was traditionally taught. The purpose of this paper is to propose a standardized learning outcomes specific to resonance that would achieve the minimum knowledge required for all entry-level professionals in speech-language pathology. Graduate programs and faculty should retain flexibility and creativity in how these learning outcomes are achieved. Shared learning objectives across programs would serve programs, faculty, students, accreditation site visitors, and the public in assuring that a consistent, minimum core knowledge is achieved across graduate training programs. Proficiency in the management of individuals with resonance disorders would require additional knowledge and skills.

Purpose The purpose of this article is to highlight the need for increased focus on cognitive communication in North American speech-language pathology graduate education models. Method We describe key findings from a recent survey of acute care speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the United States and expand upon the ensuing discussion at the 2020 International Cognitive-Communication Disorders Conference to consider some of the specific challenges of training for cognitive communication and make suggestions for rethinking how to prepare future clinicians to manage cognitive-communication disorders. Results Results from the survey of acute care SLPs indicated inconsistent confidence and training in managing cognitive-communication disorders. We discuss the pros and cons of several avenues for improving the consistency of cognitive-communication training, including a standalone cognitive-communication course, integrating cognitive communication in all courses across the speech-language pathology undergraduate and graduate curriculum, and using problem-based learning frameworks to better prepare students as independent thinkers in the area of cognitive communication and beyond. Conclusions Cognitive-communication disorders cut across clinical diagnoses and settings and are one of the largest and fastest growing parts of the SLP's scope of practice. Yet, surveys, including the one discussed here, have repeatedly indicated that SLPs do not feel prepared or confident to work with individuals with cognitive-communication disorders. We propose several avenues for increasing educational emphasis on cognitive communication. We hope these ideas will generate discussion and guide decision making to empower SLPs to think critically and step confidently into their roles as leaders in managing the heterogeneous and ever-growing populations of individuals with cognitive-communication disorders.

Schistosomiasis in Egypt and slum housing in New York City are examples of the kinds of problems which require public health workers to look beyond conventional medical horizons. The role of public health workers needs to be expanded beyond the traditional administrative boundaries for government and the academic world. The writer advocates changed and closer institutional relationships between training centers and client communities, and more active roles for a greater number of community health professionals as part of their graduate educational experience. This is consistent with the idea that educational training programs have to prepare their graduates for career patterns with greater action and initiative. The health officership, with its far-reaching mandate for involvement in all aspects of community health, is suggested as an instrument through which academic involvement in community health can be mediated. At the same time, the role of the health officer needs to be redefined as the community's “ecologic triage officer.” Involvement with the health officer's problems will broaden an institution's approach to community health because these problems reach beyond medical care. The professional roles associated with many of the major new problems of community health will require closer structural relationships between governmental-type field settings and academic residency and training programs.

The focus on interprofessional education (IPE) for professional training programs in allied health professions such as social work has increased recently. There is limited pedagogical literature regarding either the instruction or application of IPE in any given profession. Based on a co-teaching model of instruction, this article delineates the preparation and integration process of a pilot course on IPE. The pilot course was taught at a small liberal arts college where it was cross-listed in two undergraduate professional programs in social work and speech-language pathology. This article discusses the relevance of including IPE in allied health professional training programs. Additionally, this article outlines the timeline for developing and implementing the course, from conceptualization to the integration phases including implications from student evaluations of their experience in the course. Elements of the course including delivery, descriptions of assignments, and projects also are discussed.

Abstract Background Medical education encompasses many activities (e.g., teaching, supervision, mentorship, and administration). Little research has explored what the term "medical education" means to trainees or assessed the importance postgraduate medical trainees place on education as part of their career plans. Methods We conducted a survey of fellows in all subspecialty training programs at a three-site academic institution. We asked multiple choice and Likert scale questions to characterize fellows’ perception of, interest and training in medical education. Results One hundred sixty-nine of 530 (31.9%) fellows responded. Fellows were training in subspecialties of internal medicine (49.7%) and surgery (13.0%), among others. Most fellows planned careers in academic medicine (38.5% clinician-educator, 22.5% clinician-investigator, 17.2% academic clinician). Fellows reported that their conception of medical education involved supervising trainees in a clinical capacity (93.5%), teaching in the classroom (89.3%), and providing mentorship for trainees (87.6%). Respondents identified “being an educator” as extremely (43.8%) or moderately (43.2%) important for their future careers. Only 30.2% had received formal training in medical education, but 61.5% felt that formal training should be required for those pursuing careers with strong educational components. Conclusions Most subspecialty fellows surveyed planned careers in academics and felt that medical education was important to their professional future. While less than a third received formal training in education, almost two thirds felt that such training should be required for a career as an educator. This study provides evidence for the creation and promotion of educational training programs for trainees interested in careers involving medical education.

Inservice training needs in speech-language pathology were surveyed in two groups: (a) directors of university training programs and (b) supervisors of speech-language services in the schools. Additionally, the number of clock hours of preservice training in basic disorders and information concerning major weaknesses in inservice programs were supplied. Results were related to recent findings of preferences of speech-language pathologists for treatment of speech and language disorders and training needs identified by supervisors of clinical programs. Deficiencies in both preservice and inservice training of fluency disorders appeared to be related to lower preferences of speech-language pathologists to treat these disorders. Characteristics of effective inservice programs to enhance and upgrade speech-language pathologists' knowledge and skills were identified.

Abstract How do supervisors determine the level of clinical independence of graduate student clinicians before clinic practicum begins and how do supervisors determine the style of supervision used with each student clinician? A qualitative research methodology was used to investigate supervisory practices of clinical educators supervising graduate student clinicians in speech-language pathology graduate training programs. Data was gathered through standardized open-ended interviews with 11 supervisors from five graduate training programs accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). All 11 supervisors conducted a pre-practicum assessment, but none used a published program or model to assess the student clinicians. All participants met with the student clinicians prior to the start of therapy to discuss the client. Analysis of data revealed three distinct types of meetings: presentation of the client by the clinician, presentation of the clinician to the supervisor, and pre-practicum assessment using a form. Eight of the 11 supervisors interviewed for this study determined the level of clinical independence of the student clinician solely by asking the clinician to present the client to the supervisor. The supervisors then evaluated the manner, organization, accuracy, and completeness of the presentation to estimate the student's level of clinical independence.

Use of tablet computers has become ubiquitous in speech-language pathology assessment and intervention. With hundreds of applications of variable quality available, clinical training programs have the added responsibility of teaching students systematic, critical-thought-driven approaches to technology selection and evaluation. The purpose of this article is two-pronged: (1) we describe a systematic approach to tablet/app implementation piloted within the Norma S. and Ray R. Rees Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic at California State University, East Bay and, (2) we present the results of a survey that identifies current practices in app selection in other university clinics.

The article is designed to provide speech-language pathologists with information they can use in designing hands-on augmentative & alternative communication (AAC) partner training programs directed toward speech-language pathology graduate students and instructional staff working in schools. First, the article develops a rationale for the need for such instruction. Next, it details necessary elements of such training programs described in the literature. Then, the authors detail the increases in instructional staff use of partner-augmented input following their implementation of a program based upon one of these training approaches. Last, the authors present the lessons they learned that can be applied to the design and implementation of graduate training opportunities in AAC.
