A sample of editorial cartoons published following the wave of accounting scandals in the United States culminating in the collapse of Enron and the demise of the auditors Arthur Andersen LLP was examined to explore the portrayal of accounting, accountants and auditors. The nature and importance of the cartoons was also investigated. While the examination revealed what cartoonists had to say about accounting, accountants and auditing, the purpose was to ascertain the stereotypes conveyed. The cartoonists working from established preconceptions of accounting and accountants redefined and reshaped accounting stereotypes. They replaced the dull but honest image with a negative one, the fraudulent accountant. However, the image of the male accountant survived. As social critics, the cartoonists focused on the consequences on employees and stockholders but neglected to address the consequences for business institutions.

This research examines the relationship between the type of auditor's report and disclosure domain quality of the pharmaceutical companies listed in the Tehran Stock Exchange. The research method is inductive and is categorized in applied research according to research purpose. Research method and data analysis method is done using multiple correlation coefficient models and multiple regression. The statistical population of this study was all pharmaceutical companies listed in Tehran Stock Exchange during the years 2010-2014, which 488 companies have been selected. In this research, CD-ROMs and statistical software of Tehran Stock Exchange and other software available in Tehran stock exchange have been used to collect data in the present research. To document the results, statistical analysis and presenting final solutions, the researcher analyzed the questions and hypothesis using a statistical method as well as 7 Eviews software. The results of the main hypothesis of research show that there is a significant relationship between the type of audit report and disclosure domain quality in pharmaceutical companies. Given that disclosure domain quality of accounting information, documentation and clarification by the client after the issuance of the draft report and the client's attempt to justify the auditor are effective factors in disclosure domain quality, since increased disclosure quality has improved the financial reporting as well as the quality of the auditors' opinion. Increasing the quality can provide the necessary background for ease of implementation of the audit process, reduce audit risks, and ultimately reduce the auditors 'pessimism to the investigative body, each of which can more accurately report auditors' reports more qualitatively. The results also show that Audit Report has a higher degree of desirability to the extent that managers cooperate with the auditors in providing relevant and quality information and provide realistic and accurate information without any distortion or fraud and will show audit reports more qualitatively.

The audit report represents the most important part of the audit process and it is the sole communication medium between the auditor and the users of the financial statements. After accounting scandals, auditors responsibility for assessing the appropriateness of audit opinions has become the subject of much debate in the auditing profession and considerable research by academics. This increased attention is due to the fact that auditors appear to be reluctant to disclose audit opinions other than unqualified. Indeed, many companies in the year prior to bankruptcy receive an audit report in which going concern uncertainty is not disclosed. The research of this paper is designed to examine the relationship between the type of audit reports and firm failure. Logistic regression analysis is applied to test the model of audit opinion decision with a sample of financially distressed firms operating in manufacturing sector in Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) between the period of 1998-2006. The results reveal that the audit opinions of distressed firms indicate the auditors fail to issue appropriate audit opinions one year prior to failure.

Corporate governance issues have grown more salient in light of alleged corporate accounting scandals and the subsequent enactment of the landmark Sarbanes-Oxley Act (U.S. House of Representatives 2002). However, even in cases where no fraud has occurred and management is completely aboveboard, the role of various players in the corporate governance framework in maintaining a high-quality financial reporting process cannot be overlooked. This case presents facts surrounding the valuation of inventory at Dynamic Data, a high-tech firm. You will be asked to consider, from an auditor's perspective, whether inventory should be carried at cost in light of changing market conditions. Further, you will be asked to consider the role, if any, that the Audit Committee and Board of Directors might play in the financial reporting process. Special consideration will also be given to examining the implications of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in the audit process.

This research was conducted to investigate the impact of implementation of SA 600 on shifting of audit clients and reducing of audit quality in Indonesia. SA 600 was issued in 2013 in order to mitigate the problem of audit failure in group entities where the group auditor is responsible for the entire audit process, particularly the audit quality in component entities or subsidiaries. In its implementation, SA 600 has received several complaints related to audit quality and shifting of audit clients. The research method is using primary data from questionnaires that was distributed to auditors and focus group discussions with auditors and users. The respondents of this research are 367 auditors of which 63% were audit partners. This research found that SA 600 can improve audit quality when its implementation is carried out according to audit standards. However, the implementation of SA 600 has an impact on the shifting of component or subsidiary company clients which move to the group or parent company auditors.

The increasing use of Instagram is dominated by users around the age of 15-30 years. The majority who followed in Instagram were famous public figures such as celebrities, political figures and religious leaders. With this Instagram, da'i or preachers can convey their messages easily and free through photos and captions or short videos. This study is important to see how Instagram as a new media is able to become a trendsetter for wellknown Ustadz like Felix Siauw and Hanan Attaki. This study uses a qualitative research method using the framing model as proposed by Robert N. Entman by observing how a discourse or communication is displayed in the public space. The finding confirmed that the framing model of Felix Siauw and Hanan Attaki has similarities in preaching Islam through Instagram social media using short posts or short videos and interesting captions. However, both of them have different tendencies, in which Felix Siauw is more dominant in discussing social and political issues while Hanan Attaki is more dominant in discussing good advice or about love between men and women.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0.5in 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">At no other time in the history of the accounting profession has there been such an impact to the financial reporting function within the capital market structure. The institutions responsible for the financial reporting function are reeling from the fallout of these financial-reporting scandals. &ldquo;Reports on the collapse of Enron, the bankruptcy of WorldCom, and a growing list of failures and near failures have exposed massive manipulations of financial reporting by management, inexplicable breakdowns in the independent audit process, astonishing revelations of holes in our financial-reporting standards and practices, and studding lapses of corporate governance&rdquo;. (Sutton, 2002). As Sutton also points out, in this environment, investors and the public have become increasingly skeptical about a system that seems to be out of control.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>The impact on perceptions of the investing public must also include students studying business and more specifically students studying accounting. This study uses a questionnaire developed by Gramling, et.al. (1996) to study the perceptions of auditing students before and after the above mentioned financial-reporting scandals. Students in two auditing classes, one before the scandals and one after, were given the questionnaire at the beginning of their auditing course. The results show a significant change in student perceptions concerning audit expectation issues after the scandals, but before they studied auditing.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span></span></span></p>

Purpose This paper aims to examine cases of fraudulent financial reporting (FFR) which were subject to published enforcement actions by the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) from 1998 to 2012 for reasons of alleged financial misreporting. It investigates the main attempts used (how) and sensible motives (why) for these fraudulent reporting. Design/methodology/approach This study undertakes a close examination of the financial reports manipulated – annual accounts, interim reports and financial reports in listing proposals, initial public offering prospectuses and corporate restructuring proposals. Due to the limited number of FFR published, a close examination of these cases is the best way to reach a more comprehensive and detailed understanding of “how” FFR takes place, rather than performing large sample statistical analyses. This study also collects data which provide evidence for the possible motivations in resorting to the FFR. Findings The most common attempt used by the sample companies was to overstate their reported revenue by recognising fictitious sales from bogus customers. Sample companies who attempted this initial manipulation often followed with consequential manipulations and in some cases also embarked on masking manipulations. Sensible motives for the sample companies to manipulate their financial statements include capital raising exercises, closeness to defaulting on debt repayments and sustaining equity overvaluations. Research limitations/implications The primary limitation of this study is its lack of breadth due to the limited number of reported cases available. Moreover, taking the sample companies used from enforcement action releases published by the SC presupposes that the SC has diligently and correctly identified all the FFR cases – whereas there is a possibility that some companies involved in FFR may not yet have been detected or publicly revealed. Notwithstanding these limitations, our findings provide a comprehensive insight, which is sufficient in depth, into the operational aspects of FFR in Malaysia. Practical implications One practical lesson from the findings on “how” within the chain of manipulations is that auditors ought to review the effectiveness of their analytical and substantive procedures, as a number of the FFR cases remained undetected by the audit process. A second is that accounting standards setters may wish to reconsider the amount of discretion given to managers in financial reporting. On the one hand, some managers have used this discretion to provide useful information to the market; however, others have opportunistically used it for personal gain. Social implications From the societal perspective, it is time for managers, as agents of capital providers, to self-review their responsibilities and stewardship in financial reporting. There needs to be a paradigm shift in their attitudes towards the perceived incentives of, and opportunities for, FFR. Managers’ wrongdoings in these accounting scandals have had significant adverse consequences for society – including minority shareholders, investor confidence, future accountants and managers in the making. Originality/value This study provides direct and practical evidence on the “how” and “why” of FFR in the context of a developing country – Malaysia. Such evidence is limited in the existing literature and relevant to practitioners.
