Problem statement. Geophysical research at the location of the Palace of Students of DNU (formerPotiomkin Palace) in the Central Park of Culture. T.G. Shevchenko city of Dnipro were held in connection with theissue of the existence of hidden underground structures and confirmation of the historical legend, long existing aroundthis monument of architecture of the XVIII century. In the course of the research, a georadar survey was carried out,which involved a careful analysis of historical sources, which should refute the legend or, conversely, confirm it. Thestudies were performed using MALA georadar with operating frequencies of 250 MHz and, 800 MHz (very limitedly).Purpose of the article. The purpose of the work was to clarify the state of existing utilities, as well as the search forhidden ancient structures in the Central Park of Culture. T.G. Shevchenko in the areas adjacent to the building of the thePalace of Students of DNU. The research was also carried out on Shevchenko Square (formerly called Palace Square)near the central entrance to the park. Conclusion. As a result of the conducted researches of the received georadarprofiles features of display of superficial and deepened building designs, aquifers and other communications on sites ofdry and moistened loess soils of the given territory were revealed. In the areas of possible leaks in moist loam soils, anyobjects, at working depths at a frequency of 250 MHz by the device, were not reflected due to the high degree of signalattenuation. When deciphering the radar patterns on Shevchenko Square, the excavation work carried out for thereconstruction of the area proved to be a significant help. No anomalies indicating the presence of sufficientlyvoluminous linear underground structures were found on the georadar profiles of this area, which is confirmed by theresults of photofixation during excavation. The conducted researches can be considered only primary and providecarrying out of further more detailed researches on the chosen sites, including in the building. As information onpreviously performed georadar surveys on the territory of the Palace of Students of DNU and adjacent to the park −Shevchenko Square could not be found, the conducted Laboratory of research of nuclear and thermal power plants PSACEAsurveys can be considered the first of its kind.

Purpose This paper aims to interpret the workers’ perception of combined cycle power plants through visual qualities. Design/methodology/approach In this qualitative research landscape image, the sketching technique is applied as a data collection method to extract participants’ mental images by asking them to draw sketches. The resulted sketches besides obtained verbal and written data were analyzed and coded in three stages to explain the workers’ perception. Visual qualities were studied as a mean which made it possible to interpret the workers’ perception of their workplace. Findings Careful analysis of the gathered data and the emerged concepts via open coding identify four axial categories of the concepts forming the workers’ perception of the power plants: “inconsistency with nature,” “emphasis on function and product,” “health and environmental threats” and “interpretation of the built form as a mass instead of space.” These four categories support the core category of the proposed theory which is “perceiving building as the machine.” This phrase explains how workers perceive power plants as machines, not as supportive and lively environments. This is followed by consequences, “precedence of building over human” is prominent among them. Originality/value In the relevant body of literature, visual impact and visual perception of conventional thermal power plants are largely missed, as well as visual relation to environment focusing on a single building or groups of adjacent buildings. This paper covers both areas via asking for sketches as a data collection method, in addition, to interview the participants to clarify their mental image of the work environment.

Coal ash is a byproduct of mineral coal combustion in thermal power plants. This residue is responsible for many environmental problems because it pollutes soil, water, and air. Thus, it is important to find ways to reuse it. In this study, coal fly ash, obtained from the Presidente Médici Thermal Power Plant, was utilized in the preparation of ceramic supports for the immobilization of the enzyme invertase and subsequent hydrolysis of sucrose. Coal fly ash supports were prepared at several compaction pressures (63.66–318.30 MPa) and sintered at 1200°C for 4 h. Mineralogical composition (by X-ray diffraction) and surface area were studied. The ceramic prepared with 318.30 MPa presented the highest surface area (35 m2/g) and amount of immobilized enzyme per g of support (76.6 mg/g). In assays involving sucrose inversion, it showed a high degree of hydrolysis (around 81%) even after nine reuses and 30 days’ storage. Therefore, coal fly ash ceramics were demonstrated to be a promising biotechnological alternative as an immobilization support for the hydrolysis of sucrose.

The stability of output of a power station is an important criterion for power supply. It is always desired that the voltage and frequency of output of any power plant should be stable. The nature of fluctuations, if any, in the output, needs thorough investigation. If the fluctuation has high degree of chaos as revealed by the time series representing the voltage, then such fluctuation may be controlled by introducing unconventional sources of power like hydro, wind, et cetera in the grid. The authors have analyzed the daily voltage output from five different thermal power stations in Eastern India. To analyze the dynamics of the time series the authors have used the techniques from nonlinear dynamics Delay Embedded Phase Reconstruction and Empirical Mode Decomposition. The studies show that the dynamics of the time path of voltage output of Biharshariff, Maithon, and Jeypore power plants are more or less chaotic in nature. Therefore, it may be inferred that in those particular grids other sources of power generation may be introduced.

Now-a-days energy planners are aiming to increase the use of renewable energy sources and nuclear to meet the electricity generation. But till now coal-based power plants are the major source of electricity generation. Disadvantages of coal-based thermal power plants is disposal problem of fly ash and pond ash. It was earlier considered as a total waste and environmental hazard thus its use was limited, but now its useful properties have been known as raw material for various application in construction field. Fly ash from the thermal plants is available in large quantities in fine and coarse form. Fine fly ash is used in construction industry in some amount and coarse fly ash is subsequently disposed over land in slurry forms. In India around 180 MT fly is produced and only around 45% of that is being utilized in different sectors. Balance fly ash is being disposed over land. It needs one acre of land for ash disposal to produce 1MW electricity from coal. Fly ash and pond ash utilization helps to reduce the consumption of natural resources. The fly ash became available in coal based thermal power station in the year 1930 in USA. For its gainful utilization, scientist started research activities and in the year 1937, R.E. Davis and his associates at university of California published research details on use of fly ash in cement concrete. This research had laid foundation for its specification, testing & usages. This study reports the potential use of pond-ash and fly-ash as cement in concrete mixes. In this present study of concrete produced using fly ash, pond ash and OPC 53 grade will be carried. An attempt will be made to investigate characteristics of OPC concrete with combined fly ash and pond ash mixed concrete for Compressive Strength test, Split Tensile Strength test, Flexural Strength test and Durability tests. This paper deals with the review of literature for fly-ash and pond-ash as partial replacement of cement in concrete.

The article deals with the problem of waste disposal and, accordingly, landfills in the Moscow Region, which have now become the number 1 problem for the environment in Moscow and the Moscow Region. To solve this problem, incineration plants (IP) will be established in the near future. 4 plants will be located in the Moscow Region that will be able to eliminate 2800 thousand tons of waste per year. Burning of waste results in formation of slag making 25% of its volume, which has a very high temperature (1300.1500°C). An arrangement is considered, in which slag is sent to a water bath and heats the water to 50.90°C. This temperature is sufficient to evaporate any low-temperature substance (freons, limiting hydrocarbons, etc.), whereupon the steam of the low-temperature working medium is sent to a turbine, which produces additional electricity. The creation of a low-temperature thermal power plant (TPP) increases the reliability of electricity generation at the IP. The operation of low-temperature TPPs due to the heat of slag is very efficient, their efficiency factor being as high as 40.60%. In addition to the efficiency of TPPs, capital costs for the creation of additional devices at the IP are of great importance. Thermal power plants operating on slag are just such additional devices, so it is necessary to minimize the capital costs of their creation. In addition to equipment for the operation of TPPs, it is necessary to have a working medium in an amount determined by calculations. From the wide variety of working media, which are considered in the article, it is necessary to choose the substance with the lowest cost.
