This article intends to analyze the men’s basketball phenomenon in Romania, at the level of the Romanian National Basketball League (the elite league in Romanian Men’s Basketball). In the first part of this article we will analyze the numeric indicators resulted from the mathematical quantifiers of the participation of men’s basketball teams in the National Basketball League. In the second part we will highlight aspects of geographic and spatial dispersion by using mathematical methods (such as the Euclidean distances). Furthermore, we will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of the geographic location of men’s basketball teams from Romania.

The paper presents the operational model of very-short term solar power stations (SPS) generation forecasting developed by the authors, based on weather information and built into the existing software product as a separate module for SPS operational forecasting. It was revealed that one of the optimal mathematical methods for SPS generation operational forecasting is gradient boosting on decision trees. The paper describes the basic principles of operational forecasting based on the boosting of decision trees, the main advantages and disadvantages of implementing this algorithm. Moreover, this paper presents an example of this algorithm implementation being analyzed using the example of data analysis and forecasting the generation of the existing SPS.

Application of mathematical methods of cost optimization for repair and maintenance of electrical equipment of agro-industrial enterprises is one of the important and promising directions for increasing the efficiency of electrical equipment operation management in agriculture. Mathematical programming systems use graphical and related attributive information in solving optimization problems. As graphical information in these systems we used maps, plans, diagrams, schedules of preventive measures from which the list of equipment for certain types of repair and maintenance, their labor intensity for individual objects, types of equipment and in total for the enterprise are established. Databases of electrical equipment are used as attributive information to describe electrical equipment of agro-industrial enterprises. Due to joint processing of graphical and attributive information in optimization systems, all stages of work with spatial data are more operative. Beginning from spatial data search, selection and analysis we can make a specific decision during the operation control of electrical equipment. This article considers maintenance and repair operation (MR) as a task of mathematical programming with cost optimization and deals with three approaches to the organization of this task. The expediency of using each method of solution is analyzed. The structural schemes, equations describing mathematical models, advantages and disadvantages of the presented models are given. We marked prospect of using linear programming programs for the decision of the given optimization problem by means of the inverse matrix method, i.e. the modified simplex method and computing algorithm with a standard sequence of operations.

The symmetry properties of an ornament contain information about its civilisation and its interactions with other cultural sources. Two-dimensional periodic ornaments can be strictly classified into a limited set of 17 mathematical symmetry groups, also known as wallpaper groups. The collection of ornaments thus classified for a civilisation is characteristic of the cultural group and serves as a fingerprint to identify that group. If the distribution of wallpaper groups is available for several societies, mathematical methods can be applied to determine similarities and differences between the art practices of these communities. This method allows a systematic approach to the general ornamental practices within a culture and their interactions in the form of similarity of fingerprints. We test the feasibility of the method on examples of medieval Armenians, Byzantium, Seljuks first in Persia and then in Anatolia and among Arabs in the Middle East. For this purpose we present the distribution of the planar ornaments and calculate the Euclidean distances in pairs. We tested to what extend geographical and religious factors could account for the observed similarity of ornamental groups between cultures. The results suggest an intensive interaction between the Seljuk Turks and Arab craftsmen who produced the ornaments. Therefore the cultural interactions are religiously motivated.

The main focus of our research was the U16 age group since it is one of the most significant in terms of the young athlete’s future - probably professional - career. It was very helpful in research that this age group was a priority in the Basketball Academy of Debrecen’s program and they were competing in an international basketball league, in the European Youth Basketball League (EYBL). Thanks to the EYBL tournaments we have got a chance to analyze this youth category completely. For primer research we have chosen three teams, two Hungarian, and one Italian, to get an impression why is so important to play basketball at the international level in this age.  We have made interviews with the coaches, organizers and the manager of the league to have an international comparison of this age group.

This chapter analyses the structural transformations within the Norwegian shipping industry as a result of the shipping crisis. It focuses on the spatial dispersion of both tonnage and shipping companies. The transformations are analysed using a purpose-built database which demonstrates the decline of Norwegian shipping companies by two thirds during the crisis. It also demonstrates that the size of a company and its geographic location played a part in survival rates during the crisis. The traditional methods of measuring fleet size - Deadweight Tons (DWT) and Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) - are eschewed in this chapter’s statistical analysis in favour of Compensated Gross Register Tons (CGRT), in order to more accurately reflect the Norwegian fleet’s losses. This leads to the conclusion that mammoth tankers and bulk carriers were replaced by smaller, sophisticated vessels that held more per-ton value.
