The directional solidification of the ternary Al alloy with composition of 2.6 at%Ni, 0.9 at%Y and 96.5 at% Al was carried out under the temperature gradient of 5 K/mm and the droping velocities of 0.5 mm/min, 1 mm/min, 5 mm/min, 10 mm/min, and 25 mm/min. The microstructure of the Al-Ni-Y ternary alloy was also analyzed by X-ray diffraction and optical microscope. The experimental results show that the microstructures of the Al-Ni-Y ternary alloy are consisted of ª-Al2, Al3Ni and Y4Ni6Al23phase when the alloy was directionally solidified in all directionally solidified rates in the experiments. No primary -Al can be found in the sample with directionally solidified rate of 0.5 mm/min. When the rates higher than 1 mm/min, the primary ª-Al can be observed. The microstructure of the directionally solidified alloy becomes finer and the primary ª-Al is smaller gradually with the increasing of growth velocities when the dropping rate of directional solidification is higher than 5 min/min. Two eutectic structures, Y4Ni6Al23andª-Al eutectic and Al3Ni and ª-Al eutectic, can be found when the dropping rate is higher than 10 mm/min.

An X-ray diffraction method is developed for the determination of the distribution of temperature and interplanar spacing in a single-crystal plate. In particular, the temperature and the interplanar spacing differences in two different parts of a quartz single crystal of X-cut are experimentally determined depending on the value of the temperature gradient applied perpendicularly to the reflecting atomic planes (10\bar 11). The temperature distribution along the direction perpendicular to the reflecting atomic planes (10\bar 11) and the interplanar spacing distribution of atomic planes (10\bar 11) are determined as well.

A new organic charge transfer molecular complex salt of benzimidazolium salicylate (BSL) single crystals was grown by the slow evaporation solution growth technique using methanol as a solvent at room temperature. The grown crystals were characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) which confirms that the crystal belongs to monoclinic system with the centrosymmetric space group P21/c. The crystalline perfection of the grown crystal was analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The presence of various functional groups was identified by FTIR spectrum. UV-Vis spectral study reveals that the BSL crystal is optically transparent in the wavelength region 342 nm–1100 nm. Dielectric measurements of the crystal at various frequencies were also determined. The mechanical properties of the grown crystal were assessed using Vickers microhardness testing. Nonlinear optical property of the crystal was confirmed using Kurtz and Perry powder technique and the SHG efficiency of the BSL crystal is 0.7 times greater than that of the standard KDP crystal.

A new compact cell forin situsynchrotron X-ray diffraction studies of adsorption or catalysis reactions has been designed to enable high performance whilst minimizing difficulties in use. It includes a system for simple insertion and alignment of capillary samples and an original miniaturized furnace providing excellent temperature homogeneity along the sample (temperature gradient less than 1 K over a 6 mm zone at 530 K). The efficiency of this setup is illustrated byin situcharacterization of a zeolite (SrX) at four hydration levels.

In order to gain control over hard X-ray (over 30 keV), we have considered the X-ray diffraction in Laue geometry (over 30 keV) from a single crystal of quartz influenced by the temperature gradient. It was experimentally proved that the intensity of the reflected beam can be increased up to 35 times if the X-ray energies are 30 keV and keV for reflecting atomic planes () depending on the value of the temperature gradient. As the temperature gradient increases, the focus moves closer to the crystal and the focal spot shrinks in the diffraction plane.
