The results of laboratory investigation of the tribological characteristics of a new grease based on Solidol, a polyurea thickener providing an increase in the dropping point to 118 °C, and a complex of additives are presented. It has been established that the proposed lubricant is efficient in a wider temperature range, provides higher antiwear properties for tribocoupling parts and considerably reduces friction losses during boundary lubrication in comparison with the original grease Solidol. The developed composition of the lubricant grease is supposed to be used when operating road construction machines in the tropical conditions of Vietnam.

The results of an experimental study of the tribological characteristics of inactive, surface-active, and chemically active lubricants in the boundary lubrication mode when steel is rubbed against steel with a carbon diamond-like (Cr—DLC)-coating. For comparison, also tested friction in these friction contacts under similar conditions, but without lubricant. The maximum coefficient of friction and maximum wear was obtained by tribological testing of steel on steel. The minimum coefficient of friction was obtained when steel was rubbed against Сr—DLC-coated steel in a surface-active lubricant medium.

The effectiveness of blends consisting of base oil, some secondary zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP), and different detergents to form antiwear tribofilms on steel surfaces sliding in the boundary lubrication regime was investigated in the temperature range of 105–125°C. The efficacy of the tribofilms formed from these blends was evaluated in terms of contact voltage and wear rate measurements. The best antiwear performance was demonstrated by the tribofilm formed from the blend containing sulphonate detergent. The results of this study provide insight into competing effects between ZDDP and different detergents that affect significantly the antiwear performance of the formed tribofilms.

Antiwear properties of modern high temperature greases have been studied by simulating various temperature and load conditions on friction machines. Differences in tribological characteristics of greases depending on the nature of their thickeners were determined and explained. Maximum antiwear properties were revealed in conventional complex and overbased complex calcium salicylate, sulfonate and phenolate greases
