The results of an experimental study of the tribological characteristics of inactive, surface-active, and chemically active lubricants in the boundary lubrication mode when steel is rubbed against steel with a carbon diamond-like (Cr—DLC)-coating. For comparison, also tested friction in these friction contacts under similar conditions, but without lubricant. The maximum coefficient of friction and maximum wear was obtained by tribological testing of steel on steel. The minimum coefficient of friction was obtained when steel was rubbed against Сr—DLC-coated steel in a surface-active lubricant medium.

An experimental study was made of the performance of porous bronze bearings under different operating conditions. A PV value of 50,000 psi ft/min was found to be too high for the assembly used when the bearings were lubricated only by the oil initially provided within their structure. Tests at a PV value of 33,000 psi ft/min gave satisfactory results. The coefficient of friction was found to vary with load and to be almost independent of speed for the bearings tested under boundary lubrication conditions. Except for relatively light loads and moderate and higher speeds, the bearings operate under boundary lubrication conditions. When pressurized oil was supplied to the bearings, it was found that, for the same operating conditions, porous bearings run at higher eccentricity ratios than solid bearings, as predicted by theoretical analyses.

Abstract The results have been presented of an experimental study of the tribological behavior of diamond-like carbon coatings (DLC) doped with chromium and molybdenum obtained by reactive magnetron sputtering. The effect of alloying with these metals on the tribological characteristics of boundary lubrication of a DLC coating/steel contact has been studied for the case of three model lubricants (inactive, surfactant, and chemically active). It has been shown that doping with chromium and molybdenum improves both the tribological characteristics of coatings under dry friction and the lubricating properties of the model oils, while alloying with molybdenum provides lower coefficients of friction and less wear at dry and boundary friction than alloying with chromium.

Tribological properties of engineering components are a key issue due to their effect on the operational performance factors such as wear, surface characteristics, service life and in situ behavior. Thus, for better component quality, process parameters have major importance, especially for metal matrix composites (MMCs), which are a special class of materials used in a wide range of engineering applications including but not limited to structural, automotive and aeronautics. This paper deals with the tribological behavior of Cu-B-CrC composites (Cu-main matrix, B-CrC-reinforcement by 0, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 wt.%). The tribological characteristics investigated in this study are the coefficient of friction, wear rate and weight loss. For this purpose, four levels of sliding distance (1000, 1500, 2000 and 2500 m) and four levels of applied load (10, 15, 20 and 25 N) were used. In addition, two levels of sliding velocity (1 and 1.5 m/s), two levels of sintering time (1 and 2 h) and two sintering temperatures (1000 and 1050 °C) were used. Taguchi’s L16 orthogonal array was used to statistically analyze the aforementioned input parameters and to determine their best levels which give the desired values for the analyzed tribological characteristics. The results were analyzed by statistical analysis, optimization and 3D surface plots. Accordingly, it was determined that the most effective factor for wear rate, weight loss and friction coefficients is the contribution rate. According to signal-to-noise ratios, optimum solutions can be sorted as: the highest levels of parameters except for applied load and reinforcement ratio (2500 m, 10 N, 1.5 m/s, 2 h, 1050 °C and 0 wt.%) for wear rate, certain levels of all parameters (1000 m, 10 N, 1.5 m/s, 2 h, 1050 °C and 2.5 wt.%) for weight loss and 1000 m, 15 N, 1 m/s, 1 h, 1000 °C and 0 wt.% for the coefficient of friction. The comprehensive analysis of findings has practical significance and provides valuable information for a composite material from the production phase to the actual working conditions.

We evaluated the adhesion, friction characteristics, durability against bodily acids, sterilization, cleaning, and anti-reflection performance of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings formed as a surface treatment of intracorporeal medical devices. The major coefficients of friction during intubation in a living body in all environments were lower with DLC coatings than with black chrome plating. DLC demonstrated an adhesion of approximately 24 N, which is eight times stronger than that of black chrome plating. DLC-coated samples also showed significant stability without being damaged during acid immersion and high-pressure steam sterilization, as suggested by the results of durability tests. In addition, the coatings remained unpeeled in a usage environment, and there was no change in the anti-reflection performance of the DLC coatings. In summary, DLC coatings are useful for improving intracorporeal device surfaces and extending the lives of medical devices.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efek dari penambahan minyak kelapa dan sawit terhadap sifat fisik dan tribologi pelumas SAE 40. Vegetabel oil, seperti; minyak kelapa dan sawit, memiliki nilai viskositas indek yang tinggi dan sifat pelumasan yang baik terutama didaerah boundary lubrication jika dibandingkan dengan mineral oil (SAE 40). Hal ini disebabkan karena vegetabel oil memiliki kandungan fatty acids yang tidak dimiliki oleh mineral oil. Keunggulan lain dari minyak kelapa dan sawit adanya sifat yang ramah lingkungan karena mudah terurai di alam dan dapat diperbaharui. Pada penelitian ini sifat yang baik dari minyak kelapa dan sawit ini akan dimanfaatkan sebagai zat aditif pada minyak pelumas SAE 40. Pengujian dilakukan terhadap sifat fisik dan tribology dengan penambahan 5%, 10%, 15%, dan 20% berat dari minyak kelapa dan sawit ke dalam minyak pelumas SAE 40. Pengujian sifat fisik terdiri dari pengukuran viskositas pada temperatur 400C dan 1000C dan viskositas index. Pengujian sifat tribologi untuk menentukan keausan dan koefisien gesek berdasarkan ASTM G99 dengan menggunakan alat uji pin on disk. Dari hasil pengujian diperoleh bahwa dengan penambahan minyak kelapa dan sawit kedalam minyak pelumas SAE 40 terjadi peningkatan viskositas indeks. Peningkatan viskositas indeks sebanyak  17% dengan penambahan 20% minyak sawit. Terjadi perubahan sifat tribologi dengan penambahan minyak sawit, berupa penurunan keausan dan nilai koefisien gesek dibandingkan dengan penambahan minyak kelapa. This study aims to determine the effect of coconut and palm oils as additives to physical and tribological properties of SAE 40 lubricating oil . Vegetable oils, such as; coconut oil and palm oil, have high viscosity index and good lubrication properties, especially in boundary lubrication compared to mineral oil. This is due to vegetable oil having fatty acids that are not owned by mineral oil. The advantages of coconut oil and palm oil are environmentally friendly properties because they are biodegradable and renewable. In this study, the good properties of coconut and palm oils will be used as additives in SAE 40 lubricating oil. Tests are carried out on the physical and tribological properties with the addition of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by weight of coconut and palm oils into SAE 40 lubricating oil. Physical properties testing consists of measuring viscosity at temperatures of 400C and 1000C and viscosity index. The tribological test is to determine wear and coefficient of friction based on ASTM G99 using a pin on disc test equipment. From the test results,  it was found that coconut and palm oils as additives into SAE 40 lubricating oil could increase in viscosity index. The increase of  the viscosity index was 17% by adding 20% of palm oil. There was a change of tribological properties in the form of decreasing on the wear and the coefficient of friction with the addition of palm oil compare to addition of coconut oil.

Abstract This study investigates the dependence of the coefficients of friction on the normal force produced by sliding a bare finger over different artificial skins with seven levels of hardness. The coefficient of friction was modeled as a power function of the normal force. An experimental study that involved sliding a finger over artificial skin surfaces was carried out under two conditions: the fingertip being wiped by a dry cloth or a cloth soaked in ethanol. Although the exponential term was assumed to be nearly constant for identical tribological conditions, we observed that the exponent varied randomly and could be negative, zero, or positive. This probabilistic behavior has not been explicitly analyzed in previous studies on human fingertips. The probability density function of the exponent depended on the moisture content of the finger. The exponent was either nearly zero or positive when the finger sliding on the skin surface was wiped with an alcohol-soaked cloth and dried. These findings play an important role in analyzing the frictional forces produced during skin–skin contact in terms of determining the root cause behind the random variations in the dependence of the coefficient of friction on the normal force.

The Co-Cr-Mo alloy is extensively used for tribological applications, including orthopaedic components in total joint replacements. High quality diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings on metal/alloy substrates are of great interest as they are able to protect them from severe wear and thus prolong the life span of the component. Since the roughness of the metal/alloy varies depending on the applications, a study has been carried out to investigate the effect of substrate surface roughness on the microstructure, sliding life, wear-resistance, coefficient of friction, adhension and hardness of DLC coatings prepared on Co-Cr-Mo alloy substrates under the same deposition condition. The microstructure of the films studied using Raman spectroscopy suggests that the film prepared on a smoother surface contains slightly higher fraction of sp 3 bonded carbon atoms. The characterization using a pin-on-disk tribometer reveals that, the film prepared on the roughest sample (Ra ~ 0.06 μm) exhibits a very short life span of about 20 cycles compared to the film that is prepared on a relatively smoother surface (Ra ~ 0.02 μm), which exhibits a life span of about 340,000 cycles. In order to investigate the origin of this improved property of the DLC film on the smoother surface, adhesive strength and hardness of the films were studied by using a micro-scratch tester and a Nano-indenter, respectively. The results suggest that the film prepared on the smoother surface exhibits better adhesion (higher critical load) and relatively higher hardness.

Diamondlike carbon (DLC) coatings, particularly in the hydrogenated form, provide extremely low coefficients of friction in concentrated contacts. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the performance of DLC coatings for potential application in foil bearings. Since in some applications the bearings experience a wide range of temperatures, tribological tests were performed using a single foil thrust bearing in contact with a rotating flat disk up to 500°C. The coatings deposited on the disks consisted of a hydrogenated diamondlike carbon film (H-DLC), a nonhydrogenated DLC, and a thin dense chrome deposited by the Electrolyzing™ process. The top foil pads were coated with a tungsten disulfide based solid lubricant (Korolon™ 900). All three disk coatings provided excellent performance at room temperature. However, the H-DLC coating proved to be unacceptable at 300°C due to lack of hydrodynamic lift, albeit the very low coefficient of friction when the foil pad and the disk were in contact during stop-start cycles. This phenomenon is explained by considering the effect of atmospheric moisture on the tribological behavior of H-DLC and using the quasihydrodynamic theory of powder lubrication.

Low frequency torsional vibration tapping is an effective method to solve the problem of tapping in difficult to cut materials. Tapping parameters affect tapping torque and service life of tap, and cutting angle is the key parameter. Experiments were conducted to study the lubrication mechanism and the influence of cutting angle on lubrication effect. Experimental results indicate that the separate type boundary lubrication mode greatly enhances the lubrication effect of cutting fluid and the lubrication effect decreases with the increase of cutting angle. To obtain good technological effect, the smaller cutting angle should be selected.
