<p>Uno de los primeros procesos para el desarrollo de nuevas herramientas<br />de control y manejo integrado de malezas, implica el conocimiento de la<br />composición y diversidad de la flora que incide en la producción del cultivo. El conocimiento de las especies de malezas dominantes es la base de la planificación de estrategias de control idóneas, que determinan el manejo del cultivo. Este trabajo analiza la diversidad de malezas y determina la identificación de las especies predominantes dentro del ecosistema de la localidad de Quevedo (Ecuador). Los resultados señalan que en el área monitoreada se encontraron 55 especies, incluidas en 22 familias, destacándose las Compositae, Poaceae y Euphorbiaceae con el mayor número. El ecosistema presenta diversidad levemente alta, dominancia alta y riqueza específica media. El análisis funcional revela 43 especies dicotiledóneas y 12 monocotiledóneas. Entre las especies de malezas dominantes se encontraron a la “piñita” (Murdannia nudiflora (L.) Brenan) que presenta nocividad media, seguida de la “caminadora” (Rottboellia exaltata L.f.) con alta nocividad y “tridax” (Tridax procumbens L.) con nivel medio de nocividad. Ninguna especie tiene un valor de importancia superior al 28,2 % en el área monitoreada. </p>

Balanced nutritional intake is essential to ensure that insects undergo adequate larval development and metamorphosis. Integrative multidisciplinary approaches have contributed valuable insights regarding the ecological and evolutionary outcomes of plant–insect interactions. To address the plant metabolites involved in the larval development of a specialist insect, we investigated the development of Chlosyne lacinia caterpillars fed on Heliantheae species (Tithonia diversifolia, Tridax procumbens and Aldama robusta) leaves and determined the chemical profile of plants and insects using a metabolomic approach. By means of LC-MS and GC-MS combined analyses, 51 metabolites were putatively identified in Heliantheae species and C. lacinia caterpillars and frass; these metabolites included flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, diterpenes, triterpenes, oxygenated terpene derivatives, steroids and lipid derivatives. The leading discriminant metabolites were diterpenes, which were detected only in A. robusta leaves and insects that were fed on this plant-based diet. Additionally, caterpillars fed on A. robusta leaves took longer to complete their development to the adult phase and exhibited a greater diapause rate. Hence, we hypothesized that diterpenes may be involved in the differential larval development. Our findings shed light on the plant metabolites that play roles in insect development and metabolism, opening new research avenues for integrative studies of insect nutritional ecology.

Two experiments were conducted concurrently to assess the effect of different levels of fresh and dry Tridax procumbens on performance of layers. 720 Hbbard layers were grouped into 6 treatments of 60 birds per treatment in each experiment. The treatment in consisted of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% inclusion rates of fresh and dry Tridax procumbens in first and second experiments, respectively. Tridax leaves, irrespective of the form and level had no significantly (P > 0.05) effect on egg production, egg weight and feed intake. Inclusion of Tridax either in fresh or dry form increased (P < 0.05) yolk colour, while the yolk colour intensity was more pronounced (P < 0.05) in the dry Tridax than the fresh Tridax experiment.
