<p>Women in general have been marginalized and represented with all sorts of images in the media. Specifically, when it comes to how muslim women are pictured especially in the western media, there have been different portrayals that researchers have come across during their multitudes of research studies. The present study is another addition to the already available literature on how muslim women are portrayed in the western media by content analyzing the portrayals in the New York times and the Guardian of the United Kingdom. In particular, the study seeks to examine the ways in which Muslim Women are portrayed in the New York Times and the Guardian’s news coverage as well as determining the frames that the two news organizations use in portraying Muslim women in coverage of their news stories regarding their affairs. The study adopted a qualitative content analysis and uses the framing theory to guide the discovery of the findings. 49 stories portraying muslim women in the different ways were discovered after perusing through the two online news organizations. The findings of the study indicate that muslim women in the two sampled news media are portrayed as terrorists specifically because of their dress code where on several occasions the news organizations refer to them as Al-Qaida’s and extremists in the way they practice their religion. Therefore, the major portrayal of muslim women lies on the negative aspects that are reported in the organization’s media stories. In addition, among the dominant themes in the two news media regarding the way the frame their stories while reporting on muslim women include being financially oppressed, terrorists, extremists, un educated, house wives and sexual objects for men. In the end, framing theory is also supported in the study.</p>

This research study looks at the representation of USand Pakistani governments and their military in the coverage of TheNew York Times and The Guardian after the Abbottabad Operation.The coverage of these two newspapers has been studied for theconsecutive ten days. The aim is to show that whether these twonewspapers stayed critical or friendly of the Pakistani and the USgovernments? Will it also demonstrate that was the Pakistanigovernment criticized more in the coverage than its military? Thefindings, based on the Quantitative Content Analysis, demonstratethat The New York Times was more critical of the Pakistanigovernment than The Guardian. It further shows that both thenewspapers criticized the Pakistani military/ Intelligence Agenciesmore than the Pakistani government. The findings also reveal thatboth the newspapers appreciated the US in their coverage.

Does the news media cover ideological extremists more than moderates? We combine a measure of members of Congress’ ideological extremity with a content analysis of how often lawmakers appear in the New York Times from the 103rd to the 112th Congresses and on CBS and NBC’s evening newscasts in the 112th Congress. We show that ideological extremity is positively related to political news coverage for members of the House of Representatives. Generally, ideological extremity is not related to the likelihood of coverage for senators. Finally, we show that extreme Republicans are more likely to earn media attention than extreme Democrats.

The New York Times “streamlined” its editing process in 2017 and reduced the editing staff by nearly half. Through content analysis on corrections (N = 1,149), this research examines the effects of these cuts. Analysis revealed the Times published more corrections before the changes, but that corrections appeared more quickly after the original error occurred and there were more corrections for content in the A section following the staffing cuts. The A section includes national and international news and thus often contains political content, which is rife for heightened scrutiny in an age of media distrust. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed.

В статье рассматриваются лексико-семантические характеристики сокращений современного англоязычного газетного дискурса на материале англоязычных электронных изданий The New York Times, The Guardian, Forbes, The Independent, The Telegraph, Sunday-Times, особенности их функционирования. Газетный дискурс представлен как сфера функционирования различных сокращений, а именно контракций, усечений, блендинга, аббревиаций. Предметом выступают сокращенные лексические единицы, их функционирование в современной прессе и стратегии их передачи с английского языка на русский. Обработка фактического материала позволяет произвести количественный анализ лексики и определить наиболее характерный тип аббревиаций для текстов СМИ, определить их функции. Анализ материала позволяет фиксировать тот факт, что среди рассмотренных лексических единиц, именно аббревиатуры преобладают в современном газетном дискурсе, что подтверждает влияние событийности на изменение лексического состава языка и является мощным средством его пополнения. Функционирование образно-оценочных и культурно-маркированных сокращений в газетном дискурсе может как облегчать, так и усложнять восприятие информации. Однако сокращенные лексические единицы содержат широкий информационный потенциал, что позволяет фиксировать основное значение текста в памяти получателя и влияет на восприятие информации в нужном автору направлении. Словарь, включенный в текст, приобретает как информативное, так и эмоционально-оценочное значение. ____________________________ © Фомина С.Б., 2021 The article observes the lexical and semantic characteristics of abbreviations of the modern English-language newspaper discourse based on material of the English-language electronic publications from of The New York Times, The Guardian, Forbes, The Independent, The Telegraph, Sunday-Times, discusses the functioning of abbreviations. Newspaper discourse is presented as the sphere of functioning of various abbreviations, such as contractions, clipping, blending, abbreviations. The subject is abbreviated lexical units, their functioning in the modern press and strategies for their transfer from English into Russian. Factual material analysis allows carrying out a quantitative analysis of the vocabulary and determine the most typical type of abbreviations for media texts, their functions. The analysis of the material proves quantitative superiority of abbreviations that prevail in modern newspaper discourse that confirms the influence of eventfulness on the change in the lexical composition of the language and is a powerful means of replenishing it. The functioning of figurative and evaluative and culturally-marked abbreviations in newspaper discourse facilitates and complicates the perception of information at the same time. However, abbreviated lexical units contain a wide information potential, which allows fixing the main meaning of the text in the receiver's memory and affects the perception of information in the direction the author needs. The vocabulary included in the text acquires informative and emotionally evaluative value as well.

ABSTRACTPhotography is one of the singular indicators of digital journalism. Among its exponents (text, photography, video, sound or graphics), photography metamorphoses into the virtual environment. Through an empirical analysis, we compare the reference newspapers from four countries of global relevance: Germany, USA, Japan and the UK. The reference digital versions of the most read newspapers in these countries are Spiegel Online, The New York Times, The Japan Times, and The Times. The items analyzed in this work are all the text units published at the home page, including the number of existing photographs in total content units and the number of different types of pictures, classified in ten different parameters: photo-news, illustrative, new, resource, black and white, color, large format, small format, edited, unedited. This work confirms that photojournalism is losing its relevance at the multimedia area and that photography gives way to the purely illustrative side; photography is an element in relation to the present; black and white photography remains for documentary reasons only; the large format photography is the only with great power in news media; and editing is not as usual activity in journalism as everybody think about.RESUMENLa fotografía es uno de los indicadores singulares del periodismo digital. Entre sus exponentes (texto, fotografía, vídeo, sonido o infografía), el fotográfico se metamorfosea en en el entorno virtual. Se presenta un análisis empírico compa-rativo entre los diarios de cuatro países de relevancia a escala global: Alemania, Estados Unidos, Japón y Reino Unido, a través de las versiones digitales de referencia de los diarios más leídos en estos países: Spiegel Online, The New York Times, The Japan Times y The Times. Los ítems analizados son las unidades texto publicadas en la home page, el número de foto-grafías existentes en el total de las unidades del contenido y el número de los diferentes tipos de fotografías, clasificadas según diez parámetros diferentes: foto-noticias, ilustrativas, nuevas, de recurso, blanco y negro, en color, gran formato, pequeño formato, editadas y sin editar. Se concluye que el fotoperiodismo tiene cada vez menos relevancia en el ámbito multimedia y deja paso a la fotografía puramente ilustrativa.

Building on research into media representation of countries and agenda-setting theory, a content analysis analyzed the way Colombia was portrayed in The New York Times headlines and IMDb plot summaries during 1980 to 2013. This unusual longitudinal study compares the representation of Colombia to other South American countries. Among other conclusions, this study finds that over the 34-year period the word “drug” was included in a New York Times headline with the word “Colombia” more times than any other word with any other South American country.

This study assessed the media visibility, a composite measure of attention and prominence, of China’s President Xi Jinping’s first 3-year governance in The New York Times. The assessment was based on the content analysis of 317 news articles focusing on Chinese President. Qualitative content analysis was used to identify three major frames, 12 mid-level frames, and 18 sub-frames. Quantitative content analysis was used to measure the attention, prominence, and the combination of these two parameters of these frames. The findings showed that The New York Times employed multiple frames to report Chinese President, and the two frames with the highest media visibility are (Domestic) Campaigns and Strategies and China-United States (relations), rather than Human Rights.

Scholars and political actors generally believe that presidents enjoy a period of sanguine rapport with the press gallery during a honeymoon of about two months at the beginning of each new administration. The honeymoon is characterized by a minimum of hostile questions by reporters and relatively gentle media treatment of the new president. However, this content analysis of front-page headlines in the New York Times during the first 100 days of the Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, and Clinton administrations suggests that all honeymoons are not equal.
