Global climate features are known to influence tornado frequency in the U.S., but more work needs to focus on understanding the extent to which climate variables contribute to increases in CAPE and shear on days with an outbreak of at least ten tornadoes. Here the authors quantify the conditional relationships between precursor SST and SLP variables and localized extremes of CAPE and shear associated with large outbreaks. They do this by fitting linear regressions to global climate variables averaged over the fifteen days before the outbreak to estimate the changes in CAPE and shear on days with at least ten tornadoes. Results show that for every 1° increase in the SST gradient between the Gulf of Alaska and the Caribbean, DLBS increases by 0.88 m s¯¹, SLBS increases by 0.62 m s¯¹, and CAPE decreases by 50.6 J kg¯¹, conditional on at least ten tornadoes, and holding the other variables constant. Further, results show that for every 1° E increase in longitude, DLBS increases by 0.15 m s¯¹, SLBS increases by 0.38 m s¯¹, and CAPE decreases by 39.3 J kg¯¹, conditional on at least ten tornadoes, and holding the other variables constant. Additionally, SLBS is the only environmental factor that has a significant upward annual trend.

This Essay examines Soviet uses of economic trade for political and diplomatic purposes in Latin America. Recent events in Central America and the Caribbean have generated a great number of analyses of Soviet goals and tactics in the Western Hemisphere (Duncan, 1984; Leiken, 1984; Rothenberg, 1984; Varas, 1984; Valenta, 1982). Direct Soviet military aid to Nicaragua, and to Grenada prior to the U.S. invasion in 1983, has suggested a more forward Soviet role in the region. On the other hand, Soviet arms shipments to Latin America, excepting those to Cuba, are a relatively recent response to revolutionary developments that may prove to be ephemeral, or which may encounter stiff U.S. resistance. Given geopolitical realities of the area, the Soviet military option certainly is less viable in Latin America than elsewhere in the developing world. In contrast, trade and aid – and Soviet aid is given chiefly in the form of trade credits – are a long-established, politically safe tactical alternative.

Populations of Acropora cervicornis, one of the most important reef-building corals in the Caribbean, have been declining due to human activities and global climate change. This has prompted the development of strategies such as coral farms, aimed at improving the long-term viability of this coral across its geographical range. This study focuses on comprehending how seawater temperature (ST), and light levels (LL) affect the survival and growth of A. cervicornis fragments collected from three reefs in Culebra, Puerto Rico. These individuals were fragmented into three pieces of the similar sizes and placed in farms at 5, 8, and 12 m depth. The fragments, ST and LL were monitored for 11 months. Results show that fragments from shallow farms exhibit significantly higher mortalities when compared to the other two depths. Yet, growth at shallow farms was nearly 24% higher than at the other two depths. Corals grew fastest during winter, when temperature and LL were lowest, regardless of the water depth. Fragment mortality and growth origin were also influenced by reef origin. We conclude that under the current conditions, shallow farms may offer a slight advantage over deep ones provided the higher growth rate at shallow farms and the high fragment survival at all depths.

Life beyond 1MeV – like life after 40 – is not too different unless one takes advantage of past experience and is receptive to new opportunities. At first glance, the returns on performing electron microscopy at voltages greater than 1MeV diminish rather rapidly as the curves which describe the well-known advantages of HVEM often tend towards saturation. However, in a country with a significant HVEM capability, a good case can be made for investing in instruments with a range of maximum accelerating voltages. In this regard, the 1.5MeV KRATOS HVEM being installed in Berkeley will complement the other 650KeV, 1MeV, and 1.2MeV instruments currently operating in the U.S. One other consideration suggests that 1.5MeV is an optimum voltage machine – Its additional advantages may be purchased for not much more than a 1MeV instrument. On the other hand, the 3MeV HVEM's which seem to be operated at 2MeV maximum, are much more expensive.

The number of regenerated arms was counted on specimens of two distinct phenotypes of the stalked crinoidEndoxocrinus parrae(Gervais) from a wide bathymetric range in the Caribbean (178-723 m). In one phenotype, the sample was divided into two groups, one from shallower (< 500 m) depths, the other from deeper (≥ 500 m); in the other phenotype the group divided at 550 m. In both phenotypes, the frequency of regenerated arms is significantly higher in specimens from shallower water than in those from deeper water. If the regenerated arms inEndoxocrinus parraewere the result of sublethal predation, as previously suggested, then predation intensity is higher in shallow water than deep water. These results are consistent with the idea of the late Mesozoic marine revolution—that there has been stronger predation on various invertebrates in shallow-water environments since the late Mesozoic. The stalked crinoids may have been unable to cope with increased predation in shelf environments, and they migrated to offshore environments.

AbstractInter-microsatellite PCR (ISSR-PCR) markers were used to identify and to examine the genetic diversity of eleven Beauveria bassiana isolates with different geographic origins. The variability and the phylogenetic relationships between the eleven strains were analyzed using 172 ISSR-PCR markers. A high level of polymorphism (near 80%) was found using these molecular markers. Seven different isolates showed exclusive bands, and ISSR primer 873 was able to distinguish between all the strains. The dendrogram obtained with these markers is robust and in agreement with the geographical origins of the strains. All the isolates from the Caribbean region were grouped together in a cluster, while the other isolates grouped in the other cluster. The similarity exhibited between the two clusters was less than 50%. This value of homology shows the high genetic variability detected between the isolates from the Caribbean region and the other isolates. ISSR-PCR markers provide a quick, reliable and highly informative system for DNA fingerprinting, and allowed the identification of the different B. bassiana isolates studied.
