Learner discipline is one of the bases of effective teaching and learning. If learners are not well disciplined, schools will not provide the best possible education. Therefore, it is important that good disciplinary measures and procedures be put in place in any school. In this article we investigate how learners in schools are currently being disciplined without violating their human rights. The nature and the causes of learners’ disciplinary problems are fundamental. A qualitative data-collection approach was employed in this research. Purposive non-probability sampling was used to select the participants for the study. Experienced educators from school disciplinary committees, Representative Councils of Learners (RCLs) and the school principals of 4 schools were interviewed. We found that the common causes of learners’ disciplinary problems varied from school to school. Furthermore, effective school management was found to be at the heart of learner discipline and the general academic performance of the school. We recommend that parents as first teachers should instill values and morals for their children to distinguish right from wrong.

Educators in contemporary public schools face tremendous challenges: implementing classroom practices aligned with their beliefs about effective teaching and learning while still balancing the need to prepare students for success on state-mandated, high-stakes tests. Teachers, attempting to straddle the fence between what they believe to be the most sound curricular and instructional practices and test-focused experiences for learners struggle to find a path that balances these seemingly contradictory demands. However, increased pressure to meet state testing goals appears to directly affect teachers' instructional and assessment behaviors, as they increasingly provide students with experiences that closely resemble, if not directly mimic state tests (McNeil, 2000; McNeil & Venezuela, 2000; Moon, 2001; Quality Counts, 1999; Shepard, 2000).

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a sudden shift of learning model to online system has brought new challenges to the teachers. They are obliged to adapt and conduct new classroom practices to ensure an effective teaching and learning process is carried out. These new teaching practices are applied in the whole teaching process, from planning to evaluating processes. These include material resourcing, material development, material delivery, and assessment. This paper presents a micro-study focusing on how Maritime English (ME) teachers in Jakarta adapt to the online teaching and learning process in material resourcing and delivering processes. The data were collected through an online questionnaire distributed to twenty-one ME Teachers at high school and higher education levels. The results show that the teachers find it challenging to adapt to online learning and tried their utmost by using whatever resources they have in their hands. However, there is a lack of consideration in using proper online resources to achieve the learning objectives.
