Normalmente, se identifica el nacimiento del paradigma de desarrollo social y humano con el establecimiento del “Índice de Desarrollo Humano” de las Naciones Unidas en 1990 y con la obre de Max-Neef “El desarrollo a escala humana”, publicada en 1993. Es decir, se puede entender que el paradigma de desarrollo humano nace en la década de los noventa.Sin embargo, es importante reconocer los trabajos previos de Seers, Burnley, Naciones Unidas, la Organización Internacional del Trabajo, el Banco Mundial, Nerfin y Streeten, que prepararon el camino para que el paradigma del desarrollo social tuviera una base conceptual, filosófica, sociológica y política.------Normally, the birth of the paradigm of social and human development is identified with the establishment of the "Human Development Index" of the United Nations in 1990 and with the work of Max-Neef "Development on a human scale", published in 1993.However, it is important to recognize the previous works of Seers, Burnley, the United Nations, the International Labor Organization, the World Bank, Nerfin and Streeten, which paved the way for the paradigm of social development to have a conceptual, philosophical, sociological and political basis.

At the fourth Cambridge conference on development problems, the role of industry was discussed by ministers, senior officials, economic advisers, and business executives, from 22 African, Asian, and Caribbean countries, the United Nations, and the World Bank. Have some, if not all, of Africa's new nations now reached the stage when it would pay them to put their biggest bets on quick industrialisation? Or must they go on putting most of their money and brains into bringing about an agricultural revolution first, before striving for industrial take-off? These questions started the conference off on one of its big themes.

O desenvolvimento humano dos países se trata de um tema em destaque que exige ações governamentais para a melhoria da qualidade de vida de seus cidadãos. O problema de dimensionar este desenvolvimento frente às ações de governo determina o objetivo de analisar a existência de correlação entre os indicadores de governança dos países calculados pelo Banco Mundial (WGI) com o índice de desenvolvimento humano calculado pela Organização das nações Unidas (IDH). Para investigar essa hipótese foram efetuadas análises de correlação entre o IDH e as seis dimensões de governança do WGI. Os resultados da pesquisa confirmam a existência de significativa correlação positiva entre o IDH e o WGI, estabelecendo assim o entendimento da complementariedade destes indicadores, e a possibilidade de sua utilização no estabelecimento de ações governamentais.Palavras-chave: Governança dos países. Desenvolvimento sustentável.ABSTRACTThe human development level of the countries is a key issue that requires government actions to improve the quality of life of its citizens. The problem of dimensioning this development in relation to government actions determines the objective of analyzing the existence of a correlation between the indicators of governance of the countries calculated by the World Bank (WGI) and the human development index calculated by the United Nations (IDH). To investigate this hypothesis, correlation analyzes were performed between HDI and the six governance dimensions of WGI. The results of the research confirm the existence of a significant positive correlation between the HDI and the WGI, thus establishing the understanding of the complementarity of these indicators and the possibility of their use in the establishment of governmental actions.Keywords: Worldwide governance. In the immediate aftermath of the 1992 peace accords, El Salvador was cited frequently by the United Nations and even the World Bank as a country that, with the international community's help, effectively managed its transition from civil war to peace and reconciliation. Thirteen years later, only the US government views the Salvadoran model so favorably.

In September 2015, the United Nations (UN) Member States subscribed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda (General Assembly 2015). This work makes an analysis on how Knowledge Societies can effectively contribute for the achievements of the Agenda's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Moreover, it will be presented the research overview conducted by UNU-EGOV for producing the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Knowledge Societies Handbook (UNESCO/IFAP and UNU-EGOV 2016). In addition, three countries from three different Continents of Asia, Europe and Africa - China, Portugal and Uganda respectively - will be analyzed in the context of the knowledge societies architecture proposed in the handbook. For making that analysis a set of indicators collected from the “The World Bank” (The World Bank 2016) and “International Telecommunication Union” (ITU) (ITU 2015) databases have been selected. The indicators have been interpreted taking into consideration the socio-cultural, political, and economic context of each of the three countries.

'Greening' our current economic system can only take us so far. GTS/Shutterstock You may have missed it, but a recent report declared that the main strategy of world leaders for tackling climate change won’t work. It’s called green growth, and it’s favoured by some of the largest and most influential organisations in the world, including the United Nations and the World Bank.
