Recent decades have witnessed unprecedented changes in workforce composition, resulting in women’s increased involvement in the labor force.  However, the proportion of women employees vary significantly within various organizational levels, with more women confined to junior level positions within organizations.   This study, conducted in two phases, explored the career progression barriers as perceived by Nepali women employees to develop a set of 22-items questionnaire which was then used to examine how 114 women employees perceived those barriers in their career in management.  Effort was also made to find if the perceived barriers were specific to any sub-group (position, job responsibility, and/or organization type).  Findings of the study revealed that societal-related barrier was most prominent within which marriage during prime of career significantly hampered the career development of Nepali women employees.  Further analysis indicated that the perceived barriers were not specific to any sub-group.  These results have implications for organizations to improve policies and facilities in order to promote women’s career progression. Limitations of the study are identified and suggestions for future results are discussed.Journal of Business and Management Research, Vol. 1 (2), 2016, pp. 17-32

Reduction of energy consumption in the affordable housing sector is highly impacted by human behavior. However, only limited behavior change research exists that is aimed at reducing energy consumption in this sector. This study seeks to implement the first two phases of the community-based social marketing (CBSM) framework in an affordable housing setting. The goals of the research are to identify the optimal behaviors for energy reduction and to identify the perceived barriers and benefits associated with those behaviors in a low-income housing facility. The results of this study identify five target behaviors along with their barriers and benefits. In addition, the study identifies potential issues and nuances in the CBSM process that researchers should take into consideration during future implementations of CBSM in affordable housing environments.

Objectives: To determine the type of CME/CPD sessions attended by doctors, identify the problems with implementation of CME/CPD program and propose possible solutions for successful implementation of CME/CPD Program. Methods: This was a concurrent triangulation mixed method study. Quantitative questionnaires were filled by faculty and physicians from different specialties. The qualitative component had both focus groups and in depth interviews conducted with different professional bodies (PMA), faculty JSMU, College of Family Physicians. This study was done in 2016-2017. Results: More than half of the participants (53.6%) reported that CPD/CME should be mandatory. Doctors who had graduated from outside Karachi were significantly less likely to report CPD/CME to be mandatory as compared to graduates from Karachi (p=0.004).Top three factors which influenced HCP’s to attend CPD/CME included career progression (65.1%), interest (54.7%) and knowledge gap (50.5%). The most common perceived barriers were lack of study leave, cost and work-life imbalance. The implementation issues expressed by different stakeholders included lack of doctor’s interest, busy clinical schedule and poor accessibility. Conclusion: Mostly medical practioners believe that CPD program is an important step toward enabling physicians to demonstrate their competency and professionalism to themselves and others. The PM&DC has to take practical steps to evaluate the cognitive, clinical, and humanistic attributes of certified doctors. How to cite this:Shah N, Soomro M, Musharraf M, Shaikh S. The article represents the results of study of motivation of the civil servants in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The goal was to identify the features of motivation of women-officials, considering specifics of their work activities. The survey was carried out in three stages from 2015 to 2018. At the first stage were interviewed 274 officials, at the second – 260, at the third – 130. It was found that although non-monetary motives have less significant for all republican officials, for women these motives retained their significance throughout the study period while for men in the terms of organizational uncertainty the significance of personal income has increased. As the leading attracting motive, women-employees indicated the possibility of personal self-realization (career progression and professional development), as the motive that hold them in public administration – the stability of employment and the opportunity to realize their managerial competencies. As the main demotivating factor they indicated the lack of career growth. After the reorganization, women-officials were demotivated more than men-officials, despite the fact that at the beginning of the study, their loyalty was higher. In our opinion, the reason for this is that the motivational measures in the republic were aimed mainly at increasing the salary that did not match the expectations of women-officials. So, further planning of motivational activities in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) should pay more attention to measures aimed at reducing the labor intensity and at realizing managerial competencies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the perceptions of barriers to career progression among female university students. While significant literature has examined career enhancement in the context of employed women, little work has explored the perceptions of future career challenges of females about to enter the workforce and embark on their careers. This study derives its motivation from research findings that confirm that women need additional focused preparation for career advancement opportunities. Design/methodology/approach The study used a sample of 484 Indian female university students located in the United Arab Emirates and India. The study uses the established Career Pathways Survey scale (Smith et al., 2012a) to measure the four dimensions Denial, Acceptance, Resignation and Resilience to career progression. Structural equation modeling was used to model the four constructs as indicators of perceived barriers to progress. Findings The study finds that among the female students about to embark on their career journey, there is a strong desire toward achieving career success. The model is validated by the use of a structural equation model, and findings indicate that there is a strong sense of Resilience and an element of uncertainty about whether perceived career progression will be satisfying overall. No significant differences were observed in the perceptions across the two geographical locations. The findings suggest that continued efforts in preparing female graduates for career success are warranted. Practical implications The Career Pathways Survey may be a useful method to assist young women in identifying their career goals prior to entering the workforce. Interventions through training programs during their higher education may be beneficial in addressing perceptions that might hinder their later career growth. Originality/value This paper contributes to the understanding of the perceived barriers to career progression for women. Prior research has concentrated on career progression in the context of employed women. This study extends that work to understand the perceptions of women about to embark on their career journey.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study if trust on team members and leaders leads to an experience of civil behavior in the workplace or reduced incivility at the workplace. The study was conducted on women employees and therefore termed as selective incivility. Design/methodology/approach In the study, the relationship between team trust and leader trust was the antecedent variables and general well-being was the consequent variable. Civil behavior in the workplace was the mediating variable. The research was conducted on 228 working women in different sectors of the Indian organization. Trust (in leaders and on teams) and general well-being were measured by established scales. Selective incivility scale was developed based on the qualitative inputs from working women. Data were analysed on SPSS and AMOS version 20. Findings The study showed that trust (between leader and subordinates and among team members) led to an experience of civil behavior at workplace, and experience of civil behavior led to an experience of general well-being. Research limitations/implications This research has contributed to both theoretical and managerial aspects. On the theoretical front, this research has emphasized the role of trust in building a civil environment in the workplace. On the managerial front, it has contributed to showing how low incivility encourages inclusivity and maintains the general well-being of employees, and therefore advocates the practice of civil behavior. Practical implications The study is relevant in managing politics at workplace. With an environment of trust, the insecurity and doubt in the minds of employees are reduced. This leads to higher well-being of employees. In the modern times, workplaces are becoming more diverse. There are not only gender differences but also differences in age, sexual orientation and persons with disabilities. Presence of low incivility can go a long way in encouraging an inclusive workplace. It is thus relevant in managing workplace diversity and for creating a more inclusive environment. Social implications Diverse workplace constituting women and minority race have experienced more workplace incivility (Cameron and Webster, 2011). Also, presence of higher percentage of men in the workforce composition enhanced incivility toward women (Trudel and Reio, 2011). As the paper indicates that low incivility leads to general well-being, it also tries to point out that overall health of organization also improves. It should not be ignored that it is not only the employee who is exposed to incivility who gets affected but also the other employees who are witness to such situation. Originality/value This study investigates the mediating effect of civil behavior at the workplace between trust, both team member and leader, and general well-being.
