Background: Vitamin D is required for proper skeletal development and function. However, the status of vitamin D in healthy subjects and those suffering from arthritis in Nepal is largely unknown.Objective: This study measured vitamin D level in healthy and arthritic individuals of Western Nepal.Methods: Vitamin D level in healthy and arthritic subjects were measured by using LIASION 25-hydroxy Vitamin D assay, a direct competitive chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA).Results: Our result suggested that most of the subjects, irrespective of age and disease condition, have subnormal/normal level of vitamin D (≥16ng/mL). Also, the data suggested that serum vitamin D level is significantly higher in males than in females. Moreover, the vitamin D level is higher in healthy individuals when compared with those suffering from arthritis. However, vitamin D level in normal subjects and arthritic patients could not be correlated.Conclusion: Vitamin D level is higher in normal subjects compared to arthritic individuals. However, the level could not be correlated suggesting need of a pilot study to determine vitamin D level and its association with arthritis in Nepalese.Journal of Gandaki Medical College Vol. 10, No. 1, 2017, Page: 21-24

Background: Acute respiratory tract infection are a major cause of global morbidity and mortality. Observational studies report consistent independent association between low serum concentration of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D and susceptibility to acute respiratory tract infection. This study was done to assess serum vitamin D level in children and correlation with respiratory tract infection.Methods: The present study was undertaken in department of paediatrics medicine, Patna Medical College and Hospital in patients attending out-patients department (OPD) as well as admitted in in-patients department (IPD). Assessment of serum 25(OH) Vitamin D was done by the enzyme immunoassay kit at Patna Medical College and Hospital.Results: The mean serum vitamin D level in cases was (20.52±5.64 ng/ml) where as in control group was (26.46±4.52 ng/ml) with a statically significant p value of <0.0001, hence cases are associated with vitamin D deficiency.Conclusions: The finding in this study showed significantly decreased mean serum vitamin D level in cases than that of control which implies that vitamin D deficiency predisposes to respiratory tract infection in children.

Abstract Objective To investigate the relationship between otitis media with effusion (OME) and serum vitamin D level in children. Methods This prospective case control study was conducted at Ain Shams University Hospitals between February 2018 and May 2019. The study population included 50 children with OME confirmed by tympanometry type (B) who will undergo adenotonsillectomy and grommet tube insertion compared to 50 children without OME confirmed by tympanometry type (A) who will undergo adenotonsillectomy. Measurement of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D using electrochemiluminescence technique from a blood sample (3cm) taken from them on the day of surgery. Results In this study, the mean age of the cases was 4.24 ± 0.80 and 5.34 ± 1.19 years for the controls besides 23 (46%) of the OME group were boys and 27 (54%) were girls, compared with 29 (58%) boys and 21 (42%) were girls in the control group. The mean levels of vitamin D in children with OME was 16.24 ± 7.14 ng/mL and in children in the control group was 15.89 ± 5.84 ng/mL (P = 0.815) and it was statistically non significant. Conclusion There was no significant relation between vitamin D serum level and the incidence of OME in children.

Serum vitamin D is one of the fat-soluble vitamin which has the role in maintenance of calcium and phosphorus levels  and ultimately proper bone health and various physiological processes.  Although many studies prevail hypovitaminosis D, we focused to find out the pattern of  elevated or decreased  serum vitamin D level as its deficiency and surplus have adverse effects to our health.. For this, a retrospective study was done from the records present in a hospital laboratory of Devdaha Medical College and Research Institute (DMCRI), Rupandehi, Nepal from January 2018 to December 2020 where 201 participants with 70.1% male and 29.9% female with different age groups were present. From total participants, 14.9% had deficient, 42.8% had insufficient, 35.3% had sufficient and 7%  had high level of serum vitamin D. Male had 2.9% deficient and 14,9% insufficient vitamin D whereas female had 11.9% deficient, 27.8% insufficient and 7.0% surplus vitamin D. The greater prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in the females than the males could be overcome by the necessary strategies in the form of further studies and judicious supplementation vitamin D in the target population by monitoring the level of serum vitamin D. Medical students are more vulnerable to develop nutritional anemia ( i.e. haemoglobin, iron , vit B12, folate deciency) & vitamin D deciency due to irregular eating habits & hectic study schedule. Anemia among this age group has signicant health consequences ( e.g. poor cognition, decreased attention span , depressed immunity, repeated infections, increased fatigue etc) . So the present study was planned to ascertain the prevalence of anemia , iron , folic acid ,vit B12 & D deciency among young adult female & male st medical 1 year MBBS students of Medical College Kolkata,( batch 2019-2020) ,West Bengal,India and to suggest intervention strategies. 63 % & 37% female & male students respectively were found to be anaemic & low level of hemoglobin is signicantly associated with type of family as 22% of study subject's belonged to joint family and 78% subjects belong to nuclear family. (p=0.002) & there came out to be no signicant association between socio-economic status and anemia (p=0.213) . Among these subjects with anemia 12 had iron deciency . Serum folic acid levels were normal in the 100 study subjects . 30% students had low serum levels of vitamin B12 , and there was no gender preference (9 suffered from severe deciency, 21 students were in low normal range) . In this study, moderate Vitamin D deciency was found to be present in 42% subjects, mild insufciency in 57% subjects, and adequate serum Vitamin D levels in just 1%. Periodical and routine health check-up and haemoglobin estimation of the students at the time of entrance to Medical Colleges should be done. Iron and folic acid tablets and deworming drugs in therapeutic doses should be provided to the anaemic students. Students should be motivated and educated to take balanced diet, rich in green leafy vegetables and fruits.

Though vitamin D is important for bone health, little is known about the monitoring and management of vitamin D levels in patients with osteoporosis in clinical practice—a deficit this chart review initiative aimed to remedy. A total of 52 physicians completed profiles for 983 patients being treated for osteoporosis between November 2008 and April 2009. Information collected included demographics; fracture risk factors; availability and level of serum vitamin D measurements; and information on osteoporosis medications and calcium and vitamin D supplementation. Physicians also evaluated patients’ current regimens and detailed proposed changes, if applicable. Nearly 85% of patients were prescribed calcium and vitamin D supplements. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels were available for 73% of patients. Of these patients, approximately 50% had levels less than 80 nmol/L, which contrasts with the 37% thought to have “unsatisfactory” vitamin D levels based on physician perceptions. Physicians felt 26% of patients would benefit from additional vitamin D supplementation. However, no changes to the osteoporosis regimen were suggested for 48% of patients perceived to have “unsatisfactory” vitamin D levels. The results underscore the importance of considering vitamin D status when looking to optimize bone health.
