Resin-based pit and fissure sealant materials are heterogeneous materials with two principal components: the resin matrix and the filler particles. The shear bond strength test holds great importance for providing insight into the adhesion of these materials and, also, it is a screening mechanism for predicting clinical performance. The purposes of the present study are to investigate the structure of surface and the shear bond strength for two commercial pit and fissure sealants, Fissurit (VOCO) and Pit and Fissure (DMP) sealer. Seal Fissurit had the highest shear strength, and the difference was statistically significant between two tested materials.

AbstractThe study aims to evaluate the bond strength of sealants on deciduous molars. Clinpro ™ XT, Vitremer ™, Fluroshield and Optibond FL materials were applied to the occlusal surface of 40 deciduous lower molars (n = 5). The teeth were prepared for the micro tensile test, obtaining a specimen in a stick format with a cross-sectional area of 0.8 mm2. After 24 hours and 6 months of restorative procedures, the specimens were traversed in universal test machine. The statistical analysis used the tooth as experimental unit, considering the adhesive and mixed fractures data, through Variance Analysis of repeated measures and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). There was a difference among the adhesion of the materials in 24 h, with higher union strength for Optibond FL (31.20 ± 1.36 MPa), significantly higher than that of Clinpro ™ XT (20.23 ± 1.16 MPa), Fluroshield (24.61 ± 2.76 MPa) and Vitremer™ (21.31 ± 2.32 MPa), which were similar. After 6 months of storage, the Clinpro ™ XT bond strength remained (22.18 ± 2.91 MPa), Optibond FL decreased (20.77 ± 1.53 MPa), but remained similar to that of Clinpro ™ XT in 6 months. The lowest adhesion values at 6 months were of Fluroshield (11.14 ± 1.98 Mpa) and Vitremer (5.29 ± 0.58 Mpa). It was concluded that the bond strength of the sealants to the occlusal surface of the deciduous molars was influenced by the material, with Clinpro ™ XT being the only material that maintained the bond strength values after 6 months.Keywords: Pit and Fissure Sealants. Tensile Strength. Tooth, Deciduous.ResumoO presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a adesão de selantes em molares decíduos. Os materiais Clinpro™ XT, VitremerTM, Fluroshield e Optibond FL foram aplicados na superfície oclusal de 40 molares inferiores decíduos (n=5). Os dentes foram preparados para o ensaio de microtração, com obtenção de corpo-de-prova em formato de palito com área de seção transversal de 0,8 mm2. Após 24 horas e 6 meses da realização dos procedimentos restauradores, os espécimes foram tracionados em máquina de ensaio universal. A análise estatística usou como unidade experimental o dente, considerando os dados de fraturas adesivas e mistas, pelos testes de Análise de Variância de medidas repetidas e Tukey (α=0,05). Houve diferença entre a adesão dos materiais em 24 h, com maior resistência de união para o Optibond FL (31,20 ±1,36 MPa), significativamente maior que a do Clinpro™ XT (20,23 ±1,16 MPa); Fluroshield (24,61 ±2,76 MPa) e VitremerTM (21,31 ±2,32 MPa) foram semelhantes. Decorridos 6 meses de armazenamento, a resistência de união do Clinpro™ XT se manteve (22,18 ±2,91 MPa) e a do Optibond FL diminuiu (20,77 ±1,53 MPa) mas se manteve semelhante à do Clinpro™ XT em 6 meses. Os menores valores de adesão em 6 meses foram do Fluroshield (11,14 ±1,98 Mpa) e do Vitremer (5,29 ±0,58 Mpa). Concluiu-se que a resistência de união dos selantes à superfície oclusal dos molares decíduos foi influenciada pelo material, sendo o Clinpro™ XT o único material que manteve os valores de resistência de união após 6 meses.Palavras-chave: Selantes de Fossas e Fissuras. AbstractIn the routine clinical situation, the contamination by blood and/or saliva in restorative procedures can be happen in non-cooperation of the patient in dental office. The aim of the study was to assess in vitro shear bond strength of a resin sealant associated with two types of adhesives contaminated with saliva and blood. Healthy human molars were used and the specimens and the crowns were sectioned in the bucco-lingual direction, thus obtaining two segments of similar proportions (mesial and distal), totaling 60 surfaces, and the surfaces were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 15). Group I (control) received no type of contamination and the sealant was applied. In group II, the surfaces were contaminated with 10 μl of saliva/blood and the sealant was applied. In group III, the surfaces were contaminated with 10 μl of saliva/blood and the Single Bond total-etch adhesive system was applied followed by application of sealant. In group IV, the surfaces were contaminated with 10 μl of saliva/blood and the Prime & Bond NT total-etch adhesive system was applied followed by the application of sealant. Samples were tested in the universal testing machine and the analysis of shear bond strength was performed. A difference between Group I (12.61MPa) and the other groups was found; Group II (2. 28MPa) was different than Groups III (7.07MPa) and IV (7.79MPa), but Groups III and IV were similar. The application of an adhesive system when there is contamination with saliva/blood is required prior to application of pit and fissure sealants. Keywords: Pit and Fissure Sealants. ResumoNa situação clínica de rotina, a contaminação por sangue e/ou saliva em procedimentos restauradores pode ocorrer em pacientes que não colaboram no consultório odontológico. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a resistência ao cisalhamento in vitro de um selante de resina associado a dois tipos de adesivos contaminados com saliva e sangue. Foram utilizados molares humanos saudáveis e os espécimes e as coroas foram seccionados na direção bucal-lingual, obtendo assim dois segmentos de proporções semelhantes (mesial e distal), totalizando 60 superfícies, e as superfícies foram divididas aleatoriamente em 4 grupos (n = 15). O Grupo I (controle) não recebeu nenhum tipo de contaminação e o selante foi aplicado. No grupo II, as superfícies foram contaminadas com 10 μl de saliva / sangue e o selante foi aplicado. No grupo III, as superfícies foram contaminadas com 10 μl de saliva / sangue e o sistema adesivo Single-Bond foi aplicado seguindo a aplicação de selante. No grupo IV, as superfícies foram contaminadas com 10 μl de saliva / sangue e o sistema adesivo de ataque total Prime & Bond NT foi aplicado seguido da aplicação de vedante. As amostras foram testadas na máquina de ensaio universal e a análise da resistência à ligação ao cisalhamento foi realizada. Uma diferença entre o Grupo I (12,61MPa) e os outros grupos foi encontrada; O Grupo II (2,28 MPa) foi diferente dos Grupos III (7,07MPa) e IV (7,79 MPa), mas os Grupos III e IV foram semelhantes. This study evaluated the impact of extended etching and bonding strategies on the microshear bond strength of three sealant materials. Two pit-and-fissure sealants [FluroShield, Dentsply (light-cured) and AlphaSeal, DFL (self-cured)] and one light-cured flowable composite resin (Permaflo, Ultradent) were evaluated according to different enamel etching times (15 s or 30 s) and bonding procedures (no adhesive application, application of primer/hydrophobic resin or hydrophobic resin only). Intact enamel blocks were obtained from bovine teeth and sealed via the tested protocols. After 24 h, the microshear bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Failure modes were classified by stereomicroscopy. Data were submitted to a three-way ANOVA and to Tukey's test (α=0.05). There was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) among the materials. Permaflo showed higher bond strength when etched for 30 s alone. Enamel overetching decreased the bond strength of the light-cured sealant. Primer/bond previous treatment improved bond performance for AlphaSeal. In conclusion, from the tested conditions, all sealant materials presented similar bond strength values in relation to bonding protocol and etching time. The flowable composite can be used as a pit-and-fissure sealant. The use of a three-step adhesive system was essential for the self-cured sealant application.
