The scientific biography of the outstanding herpetologist and specialist in zoogeography Sergei Alexandrovich Chernov (1903–1964) was reconstructed on the base the study of archival materials and literature sources. The text is divided into four parts, reflecting the main stages of his biography: 1903–1930 – Kharkiv, the beginning of the scientific career; 1930–1941 – relocation to Leningrad, Tajik-Pamir expedition; 1941–1945 – Great Patriotic War and evacuation; 1945–1964 – period after the Great Patriotic War. In the paper, we emphasize the line of teacher–student continuity begun by A.M. Nikolsky and S.A. Chernov in the herpetology department of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The appendix contains a list of his publications (52 titles), taxa, described by him (11) and named in his honor (6). In majority of his publications, Chernov was the sole author; most of them were published in Russian; only one paper was written in a foreign (German) language. One of the main achievements of Chernov should be recognized a publication of the Guide of amphibians and reptiles of the USSR together with P.V. Terentyev. He made the greatest contribution to the study of the systematics of lizards and snakes, composition, zoogeography, and the history of the formation of the herpetofauna of Central Asia. According to his studies, the fauna of Central and Central Asia are subsidiaries of the once united region, what contradicted the views of his teacher Nikolsky, who developed the concept of M.A. Menzbir about the young postglacial origin of the Aral-Caspian deserts and the ancient, Eocene origin of the deserts of Central Asia.

The given article discloses the unknown pages from the history of the Crimean studies, associated with the rich events of the 20s of the XX century. There were reproduced the unknown directions in the study of ethnography of the Crimean Tatars, in particular, was given the analysis and publication of material collections of the Crimean Tatar embroidery of the ethnographer-collector A. M. Petrova. the material is based on personal archival documents of a great researcher of the Crimea – ethnographer Evgenia Yurievna Spasskaya, they were identified in the National Archival Funds of manuscripts and phonorecords of the Institute of Art, Folklore and Ethnography. M. T. Rylsky NAS of Ukraine. The previously unknown facts of her scientific biography, related to the research in the Crimea and contacts with the Crimean scientists on the basis of her personal documents, were identified in the St. Petersburg branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the epistolary heritage of an ethnographer.

The publication describes the history of the formation of the Department/Laboratory of Herpetology in the Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences and previously unknown facts of the biography of its staff. The life of the prominent scholar and organizer of science and Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences S.R. Mikulinskii (19191991), who determined strategic directions for the development of the history of science and lay the foundation for the science of science in the 1960s 1980s, was full of tragic turns. In his biography, it is said that his years of schooling were followed by his volunteering for the army during the Great Patriotic War, years of being a prisoner in first Nazi, and then Soviet, camps, followed by years of studies and a meteoric scientific career that abruptly ended with his expulsion from the USSR Academy of Sciences, Institute for the History of Science and Technology that he himself had nurtured. Under his guidance, prominent scientists in a wide range of disciplines were brought together at the Institute, which reached the peak of its development having become a globally recognized center for the advancement of thought in the history of science.

This paper devoted to investigation and putting into scientific circulation art medals and philately objects dedicated to Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov and containing the information for the study of the history of biology. The special attention is paying to Ukraine’s role in the fate of this outstanding scientist. The first observations and conclusions of talented student relate to the period of his practice at Poltava research station. His brilliant scientific career ended with the arrest in Ukraine in 1940. Philatelic products devoted to Vavilov’s law of homology series in genetical mutability and routes of his scientific expeditions. Among the medals – prestigious award of Russian academy of sciences named by Vavilov. The art medals and philately objects providing information for the study of the history of biology have been described in the article. In the article dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Veniamin V. Alekseev, the author traces the main milestones of the scientific biography of the prominent historian who is a well-known specialist in the field of national history and the theory of historical process and the founder of the Institute of History and Archaeology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The paper considers the main stages of the formation of the scientist, his scientific, organizational and administrative activities in the field of historical science. The author highlights the scientific results of Academician V.V. Alekseev that made him well known in Russia and abroad, his theoretical and methodological studies and such large blocks of scientific research as the history of Russian modernizations, the phenomenon of Russian regionalism, the history of metallurgy of the Urals and industrial heritage. The article also focuses on the features of the scientific method of V.V. Alekseev and his merits in the formation of the documentary base for historical research.

For more than twenty years, the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences celebrates the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture with a traditional scholarly conference.”. Since 2014, it has been held in the young scholars’ format. In 2019, participants from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Togliatti, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg, and Rostov-on-Don, as well as Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania continued this tradition. A wide range of problems related to the history of the Slavic peoples from the Middle Ages to the present time in the national, regional and international context were discussed again. Participants talked about the typology of Slavic languages and dialects, linguo-geography, socio- and ethnolinguistics, analyzed formation, development, current state, and prospects of Slavic literatures, etc.

The book was compiled on the materials of the scientific conference “Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations of nations and states in the Slavic cultural discourse” (2019), held at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) and devoted to the history of the nations’ personifications and generalized ethnic images in period of “imagined communities” formation. This process is reconstructing on verbal and visual sources and by methods of various disciplines. The historical evolution of such zoomorphic incarnations of nations as an Eagle (in the Polish patriotic poetry of the first third of the 19th cent), a Falcon (in the South Slavic and Czech cultures in the 19th cent), a Griffin (during the formation of the Cassubian ethnocultural identity) is considered. The animalistic national representations in the Estonian caricature of the interwar twenty years of the 20th cent., so as the functioning of the Bear’s allegory as a symbol of Russia in modern Russian souvenir products are analyzed. The originality of zoomorphic symbolism in Polish and Soviet cultures is shown оn the examples of para- and metaheraldic images in XXth cent. The transformation of the verbal and visual images of “Mother Russia” personifications in Russian Empire was reconstructed. The evolution of various allegories of ethnic “Self” and “Others” is presented by caricatures of 19th – 20th cent. in Slovenian periodic and in Russian “Satyricon” journal (1914–1918).
