Preparations from cells cultured from a minimal-deviation hepatoma in the rat exhibit pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenase (NAD(P)H: NAD(P) oxidoreductase, EC 1.6.1.1) activity. The pH optimum, its release by digitonin, and its apparent lack of dependence on steroids for activity tentatively classify it as a transhydrogenase of the type first described for animal tissue.Enzyme preparations from digitonin-treated homogenates were very unstable. The time necessary for the loss of one-half the activity was 16–18 h when the enzyme was stored at 5 °C; this was reduced to 4 h when storage was in polycarbonate tubes. The enzyme apparently transferred hydrogen directly and with equal ease from NADH to both the 3-acetyl-pyridine and thionicotinamide analogues of NAD. Half-saturation values for NAD and its acetylpyridine analogue were 0.99 × 10−5 M and 3.55 × 10−4 M, respectively. The enzyme exhibited its maximum activity in phosphate buffer at pH 5.8. It was inhibited by 50–60% over the pH range 7.0–8.5 in Tris buffer. This could be reversed by dithiothreitol; reversal was complete between pH 8.0 and 8.5.

Abstract The deviation-angle variance technique (DAV-T), which was introduced in the North Atlantic basin for tropical cyclone (TC) intensity estimation, is adapted for use in the North Pacific Ocean using the “best-track center” application of the DAV. The adaptations include changes in preprocessing for different data sources [Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-East (GOES-E) in the Atlantic, stitched GOES-E–Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-West (GOES-W) in the eastern North Pacific, and the Multifunctional Transport Satellite (MTSAT) in the western North Pacific], and retraining the algorithm parameters for different basins. Over the 2007–11 period, DAV-T intensity estimation in the western North Pacific results in a root-mean-square intensity error (RMSE, as measured by the maximum sustained surface winds) of 14.3 kt (1 kt ≈ 0.51 m s−1) when compared to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center best track, utilizing all TCs to train and test the algorithm. The RMSE obtained when testing on an individual year and training with the remaining set lies between 12.9 and 15.1 kt. In the eastern North Pacific the DAV-T produces an RMSE of 13.4 kt utilizing all TCs in 2005–11 when compared with the National Hurricane Center best track. The RMSE for individual years lies between 9.4 and 16.9 kt. The complex environment in the western North Pacific led to an extension to the DAV-T that includes two different radii of computation, producing a parametric surface that relates TC axisymmetry to intensity. The overall RMSE is reduced by an average of 1.3 kt in the western North Pacific and 0.8 kt in the eastern North Pacific. These results for the North Pacific are comparable with previously reported results using the DAV for the North Atlantic basin.

This paper applies a new analytical/empirical method to formulate the off-design deviation angle correlation of axial flow compressor blade elements. An implicit function of deviation angle is used to map off-design deviation curves into linear correlations (minimum linear correlation coefficient R = 0.959 in this paper). Solution of the coefficients in the correlation is given through the study of classical theories and statistical analysis of the experimental data. The off-design deviation angle can be calculated numerically. The approach requires only knowledge of the blade element geometry. The comparison among 2 classical correlations and the new correlation proposed in this paper shows the new correlation has minimum error over the entire range of incidence angle while classical correlations show high reliability only in a limited range. Experimental data in this paper is collected from NASA’s open technical reports. Rotors and stators are studied together. Considering there is significant deviation angle variation along spanwise direction, only data at 50% span is studied, if possible. The error among experimental data, statistical regressions of the experimental data, and numerical results based on the new correlation is discussed. It has to be noted that the influence of the flow condition other than incidence angle is only being discussed but with less break through.
