The virulence of 33 isolates of Bipolaris coicis from diverse geographic origins in Korea was evaluated on six adlay cultivars or lines under controlled environmental conditions. To evaluate infection levels of B. coicis isolates in adlay plants, a 10-class disease rating scale was developed based on the qualitative and quantitative differences of lesions on adlay leaves infected. There were significant differences in virulence among isolates of B. coicis, although the differences were quantitative rather than qualitative. Significant differences also were observed among cultivar-isolate interactions in the analysis of variance. All isolates of B. coicis, except KG-9515, were pathogenic on adlay plants. BC-20136, the most virulent isolate, was capable of causing highly susceptible reactions on the adlay cultivars or lines. Significant differences in levels of resistance were found among six adlay cultivars or lines tested. The disease rating scale may be a reliable criterion to evaluate a large number of adlays for resistance to leaf blight or B. coicis isolates for virulence to adlays.

Abstract A description is provided for Trichometasphaeria turcica[Setosphaeria turcica]. Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: On Zea mays, Sorghum spp., Euchlaena mexicana and other Gramineae (RAM 41: 40). DISEASE: Northern leaf blight of maize and sorghum forming larger and fewer lesions than Cochlioholus heterostrophus (CMI Descript. 301), mostly on the leaves. They begin as small, dark, water-soaked areas, becoming irregular or elliptical, sometimes linear, brown then straw coloured or greyish, with red-purple or tan borders, often 4 × 10 cm or larger, coalescing and leading to death of leaves. Tassel infection on maize is less conspicuous, ear and crown rots and seedling infection occur (16: 450; 34: 716). GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Widespread (CMI Map 257, ed. 3, 1968). Additional records not yet mapped are: Australia (NT), Cameroon, Ecuador, Fiji, Haiti, Indonesia, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan (E.) and Saudi Arabia. TRANSMISSION: Air-dispersed, probably violently discharged conidia and showing a diurnal periodicity with a forenoon max. (45, 795; 46, 114). The fungus occurs in seed and survives in host debris (15: 289; 19: 602).

Among the maize leaf diseases, white leaf spot, northern leaf blight, gray leaf spot, and southern rust are recognized not only by the potential for grain yield reduction but also by the widespread occurrence in the producing regions of Brazil and the world. The aim of this study was to characterize common maize lines for resistance to white leaf spot, northern leaf blight, gray leaf spot, and southern rust and suggest crosses based on the genetic diversity detected in SNP markers. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications in order to characterize 72 maize lines. Genotypic values were predicted using the REML/BLUP procedure. These 72 lines were genotyped with SNP markers using the 650K platform (Affymetrix®) for the assessment of the genetic diversity. Genetic diversity was quantified using the Tocher and UPGMA methods. The existence of genetic variability for disease resistance was detected among maize lines, which made possible to classify them into three large groups (I, II, and III). The maize lines CD 49 and CD50 showed a good performance and can be considered sources of resistance to diseases. Therefore, their use as gene donors in maize breeding programs is recommended. Considering the information of genetic distance together with high heritability for leaf diseases, backcrossing of parent genotypes with different resistance levels, such as those of the lines CD49 x CD69 and CD50 x CD16, may result in new gene combinations, as they are divergent and meet good performances.

CO475 is an early-medium maturity (75 days to flowering) mostly Iodent yellow semi-dent inbred which combines well with several testers in many different locations. It has moderate resistance to gibberella ear rot (both the inbred and in hybrid combinations) and intermediate response to smut, fusarium stalk rot, northern leaf blight, eyespot, rust, and goss’s wilt.
