The effect of muscular strength and strength asymmetry on jumping height in soccer players

BACKGROUND: Lower limb muscular asymmetry is not well studied and may have a negative impact on performance. OBJECTIVE: To estimate how muscular strength and strength asymmetry affect jumping performance in soccer players. METHODS: Twenty-eight male professional soccer players took part in the study. The countermovement jump (CMJ) without arm swing was used to determine jumping height. Muscle strength was measured concentrically at 60 and 300∘/s. RESULTS: The peak moment of the knee extensors was positively and significantly correlated with the CMJ; r= 0.608 at 300∘/s and r= 0.489 at 60∘/s. The asymmetry of the knee flexors between the stronger and weaker leg was negatively and moderately correlated with the CMJ at 300∘/s (r=-0.396). The regression model (R2= 0.474) showed that an increase of 0.18-Nm/kg in the relative strength of the knee extensors at 300∘/s (by one SD) was related to an increase of 3-cm in the CMJ. Reducing the asymmetry of the knee flexors by 6.8 percentage points (by one SD) was related to a rise of 1.7-cm in the CMJ. CONCLUSIONS: Greater strength in the knee extensors, preferably tested at higher velocity, and reduced asymmetry in the strength of the lower hamstring muscles have a statistically significant effect on the CMJ.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the effect of muscular strength, strength asymmetries, and fatigue on the speed and accuracy of an instep kick in soccer players. We measured ball velocity (BV) and kicking accuracy (KA) in the preferred (PL) and non-preferred leg (NPL) before (PRE) and after (POST) physical load in the PL. Maximum peak muscle torque of the knee extensors and flexors in the PL and NPL as well as ipsilateral knee flexors and knee extensors ratio (H:Q ratio) for both legs were assessed. BV was significantly decreased in POST physical load (5.82%, BVPRE=30.79±1.70 m·s−1, BVPOST=29.00±1.70 m·s−1, t19=3.67, p=0.00, d=1.05). Instep kick accuracy after the physical load worsened by an average of 10% in the most accurate trials. Results revealed a significant decrease in instep kick accuracy after physical loading (KAPRE=2.74±0.70 m, KAPOST=3.85±1.24 m, t19=–3.31, p=0.00, d=1.10). We found an insignificant correlation between H:Q ratio and KA in PRE test value, whereas a lower ipsilateral ratio (higher degree of strength asymmetry) in the POST physical load significantly correlated with KA in all angular velocities (r=–0.63 up to –0.67, p=0.00).

Los objetivos de este estudio fueron, por un lado, evaluar la capacidad cardiovascular, el rendimiento en el sprint en línea recta, la capacidad de cambio de dirección (CODA) y el salto horizontal en jugadores de fútbol semi profesionales, y por otro, examinar la relación existente entre las distintas capacidades analizadas. En este estudio participaron 18 jugadores de fútbol semi profesionales (25.6 ± 4.8 años, 1.82 ± .1 m, 77.9 ± 7.1 kg, 23.6 ± 1.8 kg·m-2). El VO2max estimado obtenido en el test intermitente de resistencia Yo-Yo nivel 1 (YYIR1) fue de 51.70 ± 3.94 ml·kg-1·min-1. Los resultados en el sprint 5 m (SP5), 15 m (SP15) y en el Modified Agility T-test (MAT) fueron de 1.01 ± .05 s, 2.39 ± .10 s y 4.89 ± .23 s, respectivamente. En la capacidad de salto horizontal (SH) se obtuvo una distancia media de 1.97 ± .15 m para el salto con contra movimiento (HCMJ) y de 2.37 ± .16 m para el salto con contra movimiento con manos libres (HCMJAS). Se observaron correlaciones significativas y altas entre los valores de SP15 con el MAT (r = .757, p < .01) y con el HCMJ (r = -.749, p < .01). Debido a las altas correlaciones encontradas entre las distintas cualidades anaeróbicas, podría resultar interesante implementar entrenamientos específicos de salto horizontal en las rutinas de entrenamiento con el fin de mejorar el rendimiento en la capacidad de aceleración y la capacidad de cambiar de dirección de los futbolistas. Palabras clave: aceleración, agilidad, salto horizontal, resistencia, correlación, rendimiento.Abstract: The aims of this study were, first, to analyze cardiovascular capacity, performance in the straight sprint, change of direction ability (CODA) and horizontal jump ability in semi-professional soccer players, and secondly, to examine the relationship among the different abilities. Abstract Objective Various nutritional strategies are adopted for athletes to maintain and to improve performance during the competition season. Betaine may enhance performance during a competitive season by increasing the testosterone to cortisol ratio and reducing systemic inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of betaine supplementation on the bio-motor abilities in young professional soccer players. Methods Twenty-nine young professional soccer players (age, 15.5±0.3 years) were matched by position and randomly assigned to one of two groups for 14 weeks: betaine (BG, 2 g/day; n=14) or placebo (PG n=15). Diet was standardized by a nutritionist, and measures of muscular power (countermovement jump: CMJ), change of direction: modified 5-0-5), acceleration (10 m sprint), sprint performance (30 m sprint time: SpT), muscular strength (leg press and bench press one repetition maximum: 1-RM), repeated sprint ability (running-based anaerobic sprint test: RAST), and aerobic capacity (30-15 intermittent fitness test) were assessed in the pre (P1), mid (P2) and post (P3) season over the course of 5 days. All subjects participated in one soccer match and five training sessions per week. Results Significant (p < 0.05) group x time interactions were found for maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), anaerobic peak power, and muscular strength favoring BG at P2 and P3 compared to P1. There were meaningful (p < 0.05) group x time interactions for CMJ, SpT, and peak power during the RAST that favored the BG. Conclusions 14-week of betaine supplementation increased predicted 1-RM, VO2max, and repeated sprint ability performance in youth professional soccer players. Betaine supplementation seems to be a useful nutritional strategy to improve and to maintain performance during a competitive soccer season.

Despite growing research in the field of inter-limb asymmetries (ILAs), little is known about the variation of ILAs in different populations of athletes. The purpose of this study was to compare ILAs among young basketball, soccer and tennis players. ILAs were assessed in three different types of tests (strength, jumping and change of direction (CoD) speed), each including different tasks: (1) bilateral and unilateral counter movement jump, (2) isometric strength of knee extensors (KE) and knee flexors (KF), and (3) 90° and 180° CoD. Generally, the absolute metrics showed strong reliability and revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) among the three groups in KE maximal torque, KE and KF rate of force development and in both CoD tests. For jumping ILAs, power and force impulse metrics exhibited significant between-limb differences between groups, compared to jump height. For strength and CoD speed ILAs, only KF maximal torque and 180° CoD exhibited significant differences between groups. Greater KF strength ILAs in soccer players and counter-movement jump ILAs in tennis players are most probably the result of sport-specific movement patterns and training routines. Sport practitioners should be aware of the differences in ILAs among sports and address training programs accordingly.

Isokinetic Strength Responses to Season-long Training and Competition in Turkish Elite Soccer PlayersThere are not enough studies that describe the isokinetic strength of professional soccer players at high angular velocities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the seasonal changes in isokinetic strength of Turkish professional soccer players (n=14) over the course of a 24-week soccer season. The isokinetic strength of players who underwent usual soccer training and weekly competition throughout the soccer season was assessed by means of the Biodex System 3 dynamometer with the knee attachment. The peak torque of knee extensor and flexor muscles were measured at angular velocities of 60°/s, 300°/s and 500°/s. Players were tested at the beginning and end of the competitive season. While the first- and second-test measurements did not show significant changes at 60°/s and 300°/s angular velocities, at the end of the training period, players' knee strength changed significantly at 500°/s angular velocities. In addition, the H/Q ratio improved significantly for the dominant as well as non-dominant leg at 500°/s. Significant bilateral strength improvements for knee flexors were also observed at 500°/s. The findings of this study suggest that usual daily soccer training (technical, tactical, power, strength, endurance, flexibility, etc.) and weekly competition might produce changes in knee strength at high angular velocities.
