A two-stage stochastic model for daily reserve in inventory management of Rh-negative red blood cells

Rh-negative rare blood inventory protection plays an important role in emergency blood protection. Normally, hospitals typically hold a fixed amount of daily reserve in response to emergency needs, but the measure can increase the unnecessary cost of repeated freezing and thawing. In order to save manpower, protect blood resources and reduce costs, a two-stage stochastic model is proposed to determine the optimal daily reserve of Rh-negative red blood cells, taking into account the uncertainty of demand. First, the model focuses on minimizing operational cost, shortage cost and damage caused by blood substitution. Then, the proposed model generates a series of discrete scenarios to solve the uncertainty of demand and predict the demand. In addition, a case study is presented to prove the validity of the proposed model with real data. Sensitivity analysis is also established to observe the effect of parameter changes on the results. Finally, the results show that the proposed model can effectively reduce the cost and current waste.

The Society’s Conversaziones this year were held on Thursday, 24 May 1951 and on Thursday, 28 June 1951. At the former there were thirty exhibits and at the latter twenty-four. The exhibits ranged through physical and biological sciences and once again the Society gratefully acknowledges the contribution of the exhibitors towards making these evenings, when the Society is host to its many friends, so successful. At both Conversaziones two films were shown, one entitled ‘ The freezing and thawing of living cells ’ which illustrated the work of Mr C. Polge, Mr J. Smiles and Dr Audrey Smith of the National Institute for Medical Research, London : the other film was entitled ‘ Medical aspects of venomous snakes ’ made by the Wellcome Foundation Limited. The former film showed how suspensions of fowl spermatozoa and of rabbit blood cells in the presence of glycerol could be taken to temperatures of — 60° C and on raising the temperature, the spermatozoa resumed fertility and the red blood cells are preserved from haemolysis. The film describing the snakes was in colour : that part of the photography dealing with living snakes was made at the London Zoo—not without some interesting moments ! These films, and the exhibits for the first Soirée, were seen by some 250 scholars on the morning of Friday, 25 May. Sir David Brunt, Vice-President and Physical Secretary, welcomed these young men and women of science, and Professor Finch, Chairman of the Soiree Committee, addressed them on some of the exhibits which they were about to see. From communications received since, it is clearly evident that this invitation to science scholars in the London area is greatly appreciated.

Two-stage production systems are often encountered in many real applications where the production process is divided into two processes. In contrast to the conventional data envelopment analysis (DEA) models, two-stage DEA models take the operations of the internal processes into account. A number of studies have used two-stage DEA models in order to evaluate the performance of decision making units (DMUs) having a network structure. In this paper, we use a non-radial DEA model called the network slacks-based measure (NSBM) model to measure the efficiency of a system with a multi-period two-stage structure. Then we describe the properties of the proposed model in details. Moreover, we shall decompose the overall efficiency of the system over a number of time periods as a weighted average of the efficiency in each period. The efficiency of the stages, in respect to the entire periods shall be decomposed in terms of the weighted average efficiency of the stages in each period. Finally, the real data of Mellat bank branches in Tehran extracted from extant literature is used to illustrate the proposed approach.

The shape and mechanical properties of abnormal red blood cells (RBCs) change considerably in comparison with healthy red blood cells (RBCs). In this paper, we perform numerical investigation of the hemodynamics of RBCs in microvessels with stenosis. Our model is based on an immersed boundary-fictitious domain method. We employ a spring model for representing deformability of RBC membrane. The proposed model successfully simulates complex motion and deformation of RBCs in micro scale flow. Our method would be helpful for further understandings of pathology of malaria and some other blood disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Transfusion of blood and blood components among obstetrics patients is a common practice but they are not without risks. This study aims to determine crossmatch to transfusion ratio (C:T ratio) and to assess the factors that influence red blood cells (RBC) transfusion among obstetrics patients in a single tertiary hospital.  MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of RBC crossmatch requests with data collected from 350 obstetrics patients. The patients were grouped into either received RBC transfusion or did not receive transfusion. Demographics and clinical characteristics were analyzed using descriptive and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: The mean C:T ratio was 3.1. Of 350 patients, 149 (42.6%) patients did receive RBC transfusion. Patients with underlying hemoglobinopathy (75.9%), history of postpartum hemorrhage (63.6%), underwent instrumental assisted delivery (64.3%), and with hemoglobin level of < 70 g/L upon crossmatch requests (90.5%) did receive RBC transfusion. Cesarean section (p=0.011), hemoglobin level < 99 g/L (p<0.001), estimated blood loss > 1000 mL (p<0.001), and symptomatic anemia (p=0.029) were the significant factors associated with RBC transfusion. CONCLUSION: The mean C:T ratio in our study was high. Identifying the factors contributing to RBC transfusion among obstetrics patients are important to reduce unnecessary crossmatch and subsequently improve blood inventory management, and thus further reduce the risks associated with allogeneic transfusion.

A model of scientific citation distribution is given. We apply it to understand the role of the Hirsch index as an indicator of scientific publication importance in Mathematics and some related fields. The proposed model is based on a generalization of such well-known distributions as geometric and Sibuya laws. Real data analysis of the Hirsch index and corresponding citation numbers is given.
