In order to solve some optimization problems with multi-local optimal solutions, a plague infectious disease optimization (PIDO) algorithm is proposed by the dynamic model of plague infectious disease with pulse vaccination and time delay. In this algorithm, it is assumed that there are several villagers living in a village, each villager is characterized by some characteristics. The plague virus is prevalent in the village, and the villagers contract the infectious disease through effective contact with sick rats. The plague virus attacks is the few characteristics of the human body. Under the action of the plague virus, the growth status of each villager will be randomly transformed among 4 states of susceptibility, exposure, morbidity and recovery, thus a random search is achieved for the global optimal solution. The physical strength degree of villagers is described by the human health index (HHI). The higher the villager’s HHI index, the stronger the physique and the higher the surviving likelihood. 9 operators (S_S, S_E, E_E, E_I, E_R, I_I, I_R, R_R, R_S) are designed in the PIDO algorithm, and each operator only deals with the 1/1000∼1/100 of the total number of variables each time. The case study results show that PIDO algorithm has the characteristics of fast search speed and global convergence, and it is suitable for solving global optimization problems with higher dimensions.

We propose UCT-Grid Area Search (UCT-GAS), which is an efficient optimization method that roughly estimates specific values in areas, and consider exploration and exploitation in optimization problems. This approach divides the search space and imagines it to be a multi-armed bandit, which enables us to use bandit algorithms to solve mathematical programming problems. Although the search speed is fast than other search algorithm like differential evolution, it might converge to a local solution. In this study, we improve this algorithm by replacing its random search part with differential evolution after several searches. Comparative experiments confirmed the search ability of the optimal solution, and our method benefits by showing that it avoids falling into a local solution and that its search speed is fast.

Abstract When a black-box optimization objective can only be evaluated with costly or noisy measurements, most standard optimization algorithms are unsuited to find the optimal solution. Specialized algorithms that deal with exactly this situation make use of surrogate models. These models are usually continuous and smooth, which is beneficial for continuous optimization problems, but not necessarily for combinatorial problems. However, by choosing the basis functions of the surrogate model in a certain way, we show that it can be guaranteed that the optimal solution of the surrogate model is integer. This approach outperforms random search, simulated annealing and a Bayesian optimization algorithm on the problem of finding robust routes for a noise-perturbed traveling salesman benchmark problem, with similar performance as another Bayesian optimization algorithm, and outperforms all compared algorithms on a convex binary optimization problem with a large number of variables.

This paper proposes Adaptive Random search with Intensification and Diversification combined with Genetic Algorithm (RasID-GA) for constrained optimization. In the previous work, we proposed RasID-GA which combines the best properties of RasID and Genetic Algorithm for unconstrained optimization problems. In general, it is very difficult to find an optimal solution for constrained optimization problems because their feasible solution space is very limited and they should consider the objective functions and constraint conditions. The conventional constrained optimization methods usually use penalty functions to solve given problems. But, it is generally recognized that the penalty function is hard to handle in terms of the balance between penalty functions and objective functions. In this paper, we propose a constrained optimization method using RasID-GA, which solves given problems without using penalty functions. The proposed method is tested and compared with Evolution Strategy with Stochastic Ranking using well-known 11 benchmark problems with constraints. From the Simulation results, RasID-GA can find an optimal solution or approximate solutions without using penalty functions.

The shortest path problem is one of the optimization problems where the optimization value is a distance. In general, solving the problem of the shortest route search can be done using two methods, namely conventional methods and heuristic methods. The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is the one of the optimization algorithm based on heuristic method. ACO is adopted from the behavior of ant colonies which naturally able to find the shortest route on the way from the nest to the food sources. In this study, ACO is used to determine the shortest route from Bumi Senyiur Hotel (origin point) to East Kalimantan Governor's Office (destination point). The selection of the origin and destination points is based on a large number of possible major roads connecting the two points. The data source used is the base map of Samarinda City which is cropped on certain coordinates by using Google Earth app which covers the origin and destination points selected. The data pre-processing is performed on the base map image of the acquisition results to obtain its numerical data. ACO is implemented on the data to obtain the shortest path from the origin and destination point that has been determined. From the study results obtained that the number of ants that have been used has an effect on the increase of possible solutions to optimal. The number of tours effect on the number of pheromones that are left on each edge passed ant. With the global pheromone update on each tour then there is a possibility that the path that has passed the ant will run out of pheromone at the end of the tour. This causes the possibility of inconsistent results when using the number of ants smaller than the number of tours.

There are many optimization problems in the different disciplines of science that must be solved using the appropriate method. Population-based optimization algorithms are one of the most efficient ways to solve various optimization problems. Population-based optimization algorithms are able to provide appropriate solutions to optimization problems based on a random search of the problem-solving space without the need for gradient and derivative information. In this paper, a new optimization algorithm called the Group Mean-Based Optimizer (GMBO) is presented; it can be applied to solve optimization problems in various fields of science. The main idea in designing the GMBO is to use more effectively the information of different members of the algorithm population based on two selected groups, with the titles of the good group and the bad group. Two new composite members are obtained by averaging each of these groups, which are used to update the population members. The various stages of the GMBO are described and mathematically modeled with the aim of being used to solve optimization problems. The performance of the GMBO in providing a suitable quasi-optimal solution on a set of 23 standard objective functions of different types of unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, and fixed-dimensional multimodal is evaluated. In addition, the optimization results obtained from the proposed GMBO were compared with eight other widely used optimization algorithms, including the Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), the Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (TSA), the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Teaching–Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO), the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The optimization results indicated the acceptable performance of the proposed GMBO, and, based on the analysis and comparison of the results, it was determined that the GMBO is superior and much more competitive than the other eight algorithms.

We present a new approach for solving nonsmooth optimization problems and a system of nonsmooth equations which is based on generalized derivative. For this purpose, we introduce the first order of generalized Taylor expansion of nonsmooth functions and replace it with smooth functions. In other words, nonsmooth function is approximated by a piecewise linear function based on generalized derivative. In the next step, we solve smooth linear optimization problem whose optimal solution is an approximate solution of main problem. Then, we apply the results for solving system of nonsmooth equations. Finally, for efficiency of our approach some numerical examples have been presented.

In order to deal with complex product design optimization problems with both discrete and continuous variables, mix-variable collaborative design optimization algorithm is put forward based on collaborative optimization, which is an efficient way to solve mix-variable design optimization problems. On the rule of “divide and rule”, the algorithm decouples the problem into some relatively simple subsystems. Then by using collaborative mechanism, the optimal solution is obtained. Finally, the result of a case shows the feasibility and effectiveness of the new algorithm.

Covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy algorithm (CMA-ES) is a newly evolution algorithm. It has become a powerful tool for solving highly nonlinear multi-peak optimization problems. In many real-world optimization problems, the location of multiple optima is often required in a search space. In order to evaluate the solution, thousands of fitness function evaluations are involved that is a time consuming or expensive processes. Therefore, conventional stochastic optimization methods meet a special challenge for a very large number of problem function evaluations. Aiming to overcome the shortcoming of stochastic optimization methods in the high calculation cost, a truss optimal method based on CMA-ES algorithm is proposed and applied to solve the section and shape optimization problems of trusses. The study results show that the method is feasible and has the advantages of high accuracy, high efficiency and easy implementation.

We have examined the feasibility of using massively-parallel and vector-processing supercomputers to solve large-scale optimization problems for human movement. Specifically, we compared the computational expense of determining the optimal controls for the single support phase of gait using a conventional serial machine (SGI Iris 4D25), a MIMD parallel machine (Intel iPSC/860), and a parallel-vector-processing machine (Cray Y-MP 8/864). With the human body modeled as a 14 degree-of-freedom linkage actuated by 46 musculotendinous units, computation of the optimal controls for gait could take up to 3 months of CPU time on the Iris. Both the Cray and the Intel are able to reduce this time to practical levels. The optimal solution for gait can be found with about 77 hours of CPU on the Cray and with about 88 hours of CPU on the Intel. Although the overall speeds of the Cray and the Intel were found to be similar, the unique capabilities of each machine are better suited to different portions of the computational algorithm used. The Intel was best suited to computing the derivatives of the performance criterion and the constraints whereas the Cray was best suited to parameter optimization of the controls. These results suggest that the ideal computer architecture for solving very large-scale optimal control problems is a hybrid system in which a vector-processing machine is integrated into the communication network of a MIMD parallel machine.

Surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms have the potential to be of high value for real-world optimization problems when fitness evaluations are expensive, limiting the number of evaluations that can be performed. In this article, we consider the domain of pseudo-Boolean functions in a black-box setting. Moreover, instead of using a surrogate model as an approximation of a fitness function, we propose to precisely learn the coefficients of the Walsh decomposition of a fitness function and use the Walsh decomposition as a surrogate. If the coefficients are learned correctly, then the Walsh decomposition values perfectly match with the fitness function, and, thus, the optimal solution to the problem can be found by optimizing the surrogate without any additional evaluations of the original fitness function. It is known that the Walsh coefficients can be efficiently learned for pseudo-Boolean functions with k -bounded epistasis and known problem structure. We propose to learn dependencies between variables first and, therefore, substantially reduce the number of Walsh coefficients to be calculated. After the accurate Walsh decomposition is obtained, the surrogate model is optimized using GOMEA, which is considered to be a state-of-the-art binary optimization algorithm. We compare the proposed approach with standard GOMEA and two other Walsh decomposition-based algorithms. The benchmark functions in the experiments are well-known trap functions, NK-landscapes, MaxCut, and MAX3SAT problems. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is scalable at the supposed complexity of O (ℓ log ℓ) function evaluations when the number of subfunctions is O (ℓ) and all subfunctions are k -bounded, outperforming all considered algorithms.
