BACKGROUND: Noise is a common harmful physical factor in the work environment. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to prioritize noise control methods using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) in a tire factory. METHODS: The study, which adopted a cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical design, was conducted in the baking hall of an Iranian tire manufacturing factory in 2018. 4 criteria (namely implementation and maintenance cost, method applicability, method effectiveness and efficiency, and intervention in the process) and 8 alternatives (including reducing individuals’ noise exposure time, designing and installing sound isolation chamber for operators, using of earmuffs and earplug simultaneously, changing processes or operational procedures in machinery with excessive noise generation, forming noise control engineering teams, requiring people in charge to quickly fix the leaks and change baking press washers on time, using acoustic panels in the ceiling and walls, and designing and manufacturing silencer and nuzzle for the steam and compressed air outlet of baking press machinery) were selected. Then, to prioritize noise control methods based on objectives, criteria, and alternatives, an AHP questionnaire was developed and completed by domain experts and noise control specialists. Data analysis was performed using Expert Choice V. 11 and Excel. RESULTS: The results showed that the inconsistency rate in all cases was less than 10%, hence the consistency of responses was approved. Based on experts’ opinion about the selected criteria, “implementation and maintenance cost” had the highest weight (0.481), while “method effectiveness and efficiency” recorded the lowest one (0.046). With regard to the alternatives, “change in the process” registered the greatest weight (0.193), whereas “individuals’ noise exposure time” had the lowest weight (0.046). CONCLUSIONS: Based on the final weights, the most appropriate noise control methods in this industry are changing processes in machinery with excessive noise generation, forming noise control engineering team, and manufacturing silencer and nuzzle for the steam and compressed air outlet of baking press machinery. Furthermore, AHP is a suitable approach for prioritizing decisions related to noise control.

: Management of solid waste involves collection, transportation, treatment and safe disposal to landfills. These activities create a lot of impacts to the environment and most of the time impose social and financial burden on authorities handling solid waste management as well as the community. Local authorities managing waste are confronted with problems, protests and resistance from the public because of difference of views and perceptions on impacts created by waste management plans. This paper assesses some environmental, social and economical impacts viewed by stakeholders in the city of Johor Bahru Malaysia. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP), a multi-criteria decision making analysis tool is used to evaluate the views of the stakeholders with the aid of super decision software. Stream ecology, flora and fauna, habitat depletion, land use and air quality are ranked higher for environmental factors/impacts. Public awareness health and safety, population size and cooperation from the public dominate the social factors. Regulation, landfill capacity, operation and maintenance cost and capital cost dominate economic factors/impacts. Four alternative disposal plans (landfilling, recycling, incineration, composting) were proposed and ranked according to the priorities of the stakeholders. Incineration and recycling were preferred to landfilling and composting disposal options.

The benefit to an individual worker of a noise control measure is assessed by comparing their personal daily noise exposure before and after modifications. However, in complicated situations, such as factories, several workers' exposure may be reduced by the same noise control measure to differing degrees, and the overall improvement cannot be quantified so easily. In the paper a procedure is proposed in which the benefit of a noise control measure to all workers is given as a single figure rating. Proper before and after comparison of the overall improvement is then possible. This rating can also be used to quantify the cost effectiveness of various options. An example calculation is given.

ABSTRACTRoad infrastructure is one of the most important supports needed for the economy development in industrial areas of North Sumatra. North Sumatra’s road infrastructure is often underfunded which has made it difficult to determine the priority order of road infrastructure management resulting in many inequities such as overcrowded roads and increasing numbers of roads in poor condition. In this study a set of complex structure involving various sectors/indicators will be measured and analyzed using multi criteria research method in the form of Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. This study includes literature studies from various related sources, discussions, and distributes questionnaires to expert respondents who have competence in the field of transportation, planning, and execution of road infrastructure. The result showed that the order of priority in road infrastructure management from 5 (five) indicators studied is as follows: 1) accessibility function (39.5%), 2) mobility function (26.1%), 3) road flow function (15.5%), 4) road function (13 %), 5) maintenance cost function (6%).Subsequent to this, the order of priority in road infrastructure management using Integrated Road Management System (IRMS) method was also investigated resulting in different set of priority order. Based on the comparison of the two methods, the AHP method is recommended to be used because some aspects and criteria can be combined so that the priority order can best describe the needs of the public.
