Objectives This work was presented as a poster in the American Venous Forum 25th Annual Meeting; 28 February 2013; Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Quality of life (QoL) is an important outcome measure in the treatment for chronic venous disease. The Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (AVVQ) and the ChronIc Venous Insufficiency quality of life Questionnaire (CIVIQ-14) are two validated disease-specific QoL questionnaires in current use. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the AVVQ and the CIVIQ-14 to enable better comparison between studies and to compare these disease-specific QoL tools with generic QoL and clinician-driven tools. Methods Adults attending our institution for management of their varicose veins completed the AVVQ, CIVIQ-14 and EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D). Clinical data, CEAP classification and the Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS) were collected. The relationship between the AVVQ and CIVIQ-14 scores was analysed using Spearman’s correlation. The AVVQ and CIVIQ-14 scores were also analysed with a generic QoL tool (EQ-5D) and a clinician-driven tool, the VCSS. Results One hundred patients, mean age 57.5 (44 males; 56 females), participated in the study. The median AVVQ score was 21.9 (range 0–74) and the median CIVIQ-14 score was 30 (range 0–89). A strong correlation was demonstrated between the AVVQ and CIVIQ-14 scores ( r = 0.8; p < 0.0001). Strong correlation was maintained for patients with C1-3 disease ( r = 0.7; p < 0.0001) and C4-6 disease ( r = 0.8; p < 0.0001). The VCSS correlated strongly with the AVVQ and CIVIQ-14 scores ( r = 0.7; p < 0.0001 and r = 0.7; p < 0.0001, respectively). Both the AVVQ and CIVIQ-14 scores correlated well with the EQ-5D score ( r = −0.5; p < 0.0001 and r = −0.7; p < 0.0001, respectively). Conclusions This study demonstrates that there is good correlation between two widely used varicose vein specific QoL tools (AVVQ and CIVIQ-14) across the whole spectrum of disease severity. Strong correlation exists between these disease-specific QoL tools and generic and clinician-driven tools. Our findings confirm valid comparisons between studies using either disease-specific QoL tool.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of Kinesio Taping and compression stockings on pain, edema, functional capacity and quality of life in patients with chronic venous disease (CVD). Design: This is a prospective, randomized, controlled, single-blind clinical trial. Setting: The study was conducted in a physiotherapy and rehabilitation unit of a university hospital. Subjects: A total of 62 patients with early-stage CVD were allocated to either an experimental group or a control group. Interventions: Experimental group ( n = 29) received Kinesio Taping intervention once a week for four weeks, while control group ( n = 29) received compression stockings for four weeks. All patients additionally undertook an exercise training programme including calf muscle pump exercises, flexibility exercises and diaphragmatic breathing. Main measures: Visual analogue scale, lower limb circumference measurements, 6-minute walk test and Short Form 36 questionnaire were applied before and after four weeks of treatment. Results: Control group showed statistically significant improvements in pain ( P < 0.001), ankle circumferences (right, P = 0.002; left, P = 0.037), calf circumferences (right, P = 0.020; left, P = 0.022), knee circumference (left, P = 0.039) and thigh circumferences (right, P = 0.029; left, P = 0.002) compared with experimental group. There were no significant differences between groups with respect to functional capacity and quality of life ( P > 0.05). Both groups significantly improved 6-minute walk distance ( P < 0.001) and Short Form 36 physical component summary (experimental group, P = 0.002; control group, P = 0.006). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that Kinesio Taping and compression stockings revealed similar improvements of functional capacity and quality of life in patients with CVD. The symptoms of pain and edema caused by CVD can be decreased more efficiently with compression stockings than Kinesio Taping intervention.

Objectives The aim of this study was to determine predictors of exercise capacity and explore the relationship between exercise capacity, lower extremity performance level, pain, fatigue, physical activity, sleep quality, and quality of life in patients with chronic venous disease. Methods A total of 170 chronic venous disease patients who were referred to the Cardiovascular Surgery department were included. Assessment tools included the six-minute walk test for exercise capacity, repeated sit-to-stand test for lower limb performance level, Visual Analog Scale for pain, Fatigue Severity Scale for fatigue, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for sleep quality, International Physical Activity Questionnaire for physical activity, and Venous Insufficiency Epidemiological and Economic Study’s Quality of Life questionnaire for quality of life. Results Exercise capacity was weakly and negatively correlated with body mass index (r = –0.391, p < 0.001), pain level (r = –0.268, p < 0.001), age (r = –0.355, p < 0.001), and fatigue severity (r = –0.141, p < 0.05). There was a weak positive correlation in walking distance with quality of life (r = –0.129, p < 0.05) and education level (r = 0.166, p < 0.05), whereas moderate positive correlation was observed between walking distance and lower limb performance level (r = 0.518, p < 0.001). Lower limb performance level was a significant predictor of exercise capacity, accounting for 50% of the variance. Conclusions Exercise capacity is an important determinant of morbidity. Therefore, there is a need to improve lower extremity performance and functional mobility in patients suffering from chronic venous disease.

Background and objectives: Acquired brain injury (ABI) is the first cause of disability and physical activity (PA) is a key element in functional recovery and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) during the subacute and chronic phases. However, it is necessary to develop PA programs that respond to the heterogeneity and needs of this population. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a PA program on the HRQoL in this population. Materials and Methods: With regard to recruitment, after baseline evaluations, participants were assigned to either the intervention group (IG, n = 38) or the control group (CG, n = 35). Functional capacity, mood, quality of life and depression were measured pre- and post-intervention. The IG underwent the “Physical Activity and Sport for Acquired Brain Injury” (PASABI) program, which was designed to improve HRQoL (1-h sessions, two to four sessions/week for 18 weeks). The CG underwent a standard rehabilitation program without PA. Results: Results for the IG indicated significant differences and large effect sizes for the physical and mental dimensions of quality of life, as well as mood and functional capacity, indicating an increase in HRQoL. No significant differences were found for the CG across any variables. Conclusions: The PASABI program was feasible and beneficial for improving physiological and functionality variables in the IG. The wide range of the activities of the PASABI program allow its application to a large number of people with ABI, promoting health through PA, especially in the chronic phase.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) impairs exercise tolerance and daily physical activity (PA). Aside from the hemodynamic limitations, physical, cognitive and emotional factors may play a relevant and as yet unexplored role. We investigated whether there is an association between the PA level and psychological disorders, health-related quality of life, and daily activities. We also searched for an association of the PA level with clinical factors and functional capacity. This was an analytical, cross-sectional, observational study conducted in a Brazilian University Hospital. Twenty stable PAH subjects wore an accelerometer for a week and completed an activity diary. They answered the quality of life questionnaire (SF-36), as well as the anxiety and depression scale (HADS), and the Manchester Respiratory Activities of Daily Living questionnaire (MRADL). Transthoracic echocardiography, the 6-Minute walk test (6MWT), the 1-minute sit-to-stand test (STST), and spirometry were performed. For statistical analysis we used Chi-square tests or Fisher's test as appropriate and the Mann-Whitney test to compare numerical values between two groups. The relationship between the parameters was assessed using the Spearman correlation test. The mean age was 44.3 years, 80% were women, 80% had idiopathic PAH, and 20% had connective tissue disease . The mean daily step count was 4,280 ± 2,351, and the mean activity time was 41.6 ± 19.3 minutes. The distance covered (6MWT) was 451.5 m, and the number of movements (1-STST) was 23.8. Thirty percent scored positive for anxiety, and 15% for depression (HADS). There was a significant correlation between accelerometer data and walking distance (6MWT), number of movements (1-STST), level of daily physical activity (MRADL), and depression symptoms. Our findings support the hypothesis that other aspects beyond physical and hemodynamic ones might impact the daily physical activity of patients with PAH.
